Regarding skopos theory

[edit]

Katharina Reiss is not the main person behind skopos theory (that would be Hans Vermeer), nor is she most well known for it in translation studies, so "is a defender of the skopos theory" should be removed or changed to something different. The source referenced on the article page does not support this claim either: "Among the functional approaches to translation are Reiss, (Katharina Reiss's) work on text types which determine translation, Vermeer, 's Skopos approach and Holz- Manttari,'s theory of translational action." In a review article of functional translatology, which appeared in Target - International Journal of Translation Studies in 2012, Christiane Nord clarifies that "This [...] was bound to lead to the misconception, still rather widespread, particularly with newcomers to Translation Studies, that Katharina Reiss was the founder of skopos theory (an illustration of this can be found in Gentzler 1993: 71 and even in the revised version Gentzler 2001: 70, see below). What is true, however, is that in her first book, in a chapter called “The Limitations of Translation Criticism”, Reiss had included the special function of a translation as an exception to the overall concept of equivalence which she had never given up [...], thus cautiously introducing a functional perspective to translation."
