On 11 February 2023, Mason drew criticism after he was appointed as the VAR official in a 1–1 draw between Arsenal and Brentford, where he accidentally forgot to add a crucial line to identify Christian Norgaard, who crossed the ball into Ivan Toney for the equaliser, as offside - therefore awarding the goal to Brentford.
