- Please provide reliable sources that 1) these people are important, and 2) that they are alumni of this college. Qwyrxian (talk) 08:25, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Titles
[edit]Is there a reason why this article is filled with titles like "Hon., "Dr." and "Professor"? Per WP:MOS, none of these titles should be in articles, except in special circumstances. I would go and strip them out, but it's going to be a lot of work, so I wanted to ask here first (and possibly ask for help as well). Qwyrxian (talk) 02:50, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- Alright, with no commentary, I'm going to go ahead and enforce WP:MOS on the honorfics on this page, at some point today. Qwyrxian (talk) 22:23, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Finished...I'm sure I missed some, so anyone is feel free to mop those up. And let me just say, that was probably the most painfully boring thing I have ever done on Wikipedia. Qwyrxian (talk) 12:02, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Sry didn't notice the comment on the 6th. I could agree with you on some of the titles here, however most have been added for a particular reason. Therefore lets discuss before removal, pls .Cossde (talk) 14:22, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- It doesn't matter what the reason is. WP:MOS says no honorifics (that's things like Dr., Professor, His Majesty, His excellency, Rev., etc.). It says no post-nomial letters, except those issued by a national gov't (thus why I kept OBE and the military awards, but not things like PC or the designations for which branch of the military they are in). And WP:NLIST says no living person may appear on lists like this unless there is a verifiable source (which can appear on the person's article if they have one) that 1) the person is an alumni of this college, and 2) the person is important in some way (this is automatically met if the person has an article, as they're already "more than important"--i.e., notable. I didn't even bother to check the target articles or the references provided to see if they actually met that criteria (my guess is that many do not)--I just assumed that all but a few of the ones with either a ref or an article met WP:NLIST.
- If there is some specific thing that I took out that you think should be put back in, please let me know. But I am certain that no less than 95% of that was correct, so at this point, it's important to add them back in where needed, not start all over again, since the process took well more than an hour, for simple maintenance work that should have never been necessary had the MOS been followed in the first place. Qwyrxian (talk) 14:52, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

- If you looked closely at your hours simple maintenance work, you would see that PC is not a designations for which branch of the military they are in but a post-nomial letters, issued by a national gov't. There is a clear difference in the British style and american style of post-nomial letters and honorifics. The removal of any post-nomial letters in this article is unacceptable as it does not fall under WP:MOS. In the case of honorifics, yes certain honorifics such as Hon. and His excellency should be removed under MOS:HONORIFIC but the others which you have removed as been beyond this. They way I see it you used WP:MOS as an excuse to PoW push. Therefore I will revert your edits once again and there after remove honorifics as per MOS:HONORIFIC. Anything think that I missed please high light. Cossde (talk) 16:31, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Fine, then you can remove these additional ones: Justice (title), FRCS (not awarded by a national government, basically just a professional association); all of the ones that simply state what branch of government/military they are in (MP, CCS, CTG, SLE, etc.), Revd., every single military title (General, Major General, Admiral, etc.), ones indication military college of attendance (psc, etc.). In addition, and actually much more importantly, immediately remove all people without a valid reference proving the person is important and attended this college. I'm not POV-pushing--I'm trying to bring an article into line with the MOS. I apologize on misunderstanding PC, QC, and KC. I should have looked those up. Qwyrxian (talk) 21:28, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- I can agree with several, yet most I cannot agree;
- Agree (and will remove)
- Revd.
- Disagree
- Military ranks, government issued and could be used after retirement
- FRCS - Fellowships of learned societies such as FRS is commonly used in the Commonwealth, as a British tradition.
- Justice, government issued for Judges of the Supreme Court and appeal court
- psc, ndc - permitted by the government of Sri Lanka for formal used and generally used in Sri Lanka
- SLA, SLAC - Military units standard practice in Sri Lanka derived as a British tradition.
- CCS, SLAS, SLOS - government services (only these three) used by the government of Sri Lanka to identify career civil servants and diplomats
- MP formally granted to current members of parliament in Sri Lanka derived as a British tradition.
- Several forms of indigenous titles - only used for persons that have received by the SL government
Please understand the use of titles in Sri Lanka is a mixture of local traditions, British traditions and new formal honors system that was developed after independence. Therefore there is a major differences between how its used in the US and in SL. Cossde (talk) 13:56, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't care how titles are used in the UK, US, or Sri Lanka. I care what WP:MOS says. It does not matter what is "generally used in Sri Lanka", what is "derived from British tradition". Our rules state that no postnomial letters that may be used are those which are widely recognized as issued by a national government, like OBE. None of those listed above counts. Military ranks are expressly forbidden: "Academic and professional titles (such as "Doctor" or "Professor") should not be used before the name in the initial sentence or in other uses of the person's name." Note, for example, the lack of "President" before Barrack Obama and the lack of MP after David Cameron. Wikipedia does not and will not conform to local naming styles. If you are unwilling to remove these yourself, I will seek guidance at WT:MOS; perhaps on one or two of the above, I am wrong, but I am certain that the vast majority need to be removed. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:24, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- Well for the record, I dont care about what you care or don't care about ! You are free to seek guidance at WT:MOS please do so. But your own point "widely recognized as issued by a national government" would mean that most of the above will fall under this category with the exception of learned societies. I can find any reference in WP:MOS that says Military ranks are expressly forbidden ! "Academic and professional titles (such as "Doctor" or "Professor") have been removed, if I missed any please remove. Further WP:MOS states the use of British knighthoods and Burmese titles, ent that wikipedia conforming to local naming styles ? Cossde (talk) 18:11, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

- While we're still discussing the titles/letters, I have re-removed every person who has neither an article nor a reference. Note that WP:NLIST explicitly says, "Furthermore, every entry in any such list requires a reliable source attesting to the fact that the named person is a member of the listed group" and also says that people must be verified to be important enough for inclusion. Qwyrxian (talk) 09:03, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- I will revert this removal temporarily, and request a period of one week from today to add the requested references since most of these are notable persons and references could be found easily. Others which lack refs can be removed at end of this period.Cossde (talk) 18:11, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- No. This is BLP information, I'm challenging it, and thus it remains out until you get the references. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:32, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, I take it back: I will self-revert if you agree to do the next removal yourself in a week--if you add some refs, but not others, the removal is actually a time consuming process. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:01, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

I've started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biographies#Need help on titles and honorifics. Lets see if we can get a clearer response there. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:17, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- One note on the refs you're adding: WP:SPS can't verify importance. So, for example, the refs on Duleep Fernando and Francis Lorenz Beven do not appear to be sufficient. Qwyrxian (talk) 12:52, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- Can the Dutch Burger Union be considered a SPS ? Cossde (talk)
- This article is a mess - it's all about trumpeting the college's success rather than producing an encyclopaedic list. Some work has been done to meet Wikipedia standards but a lot of work still needs to be done. A look at similar articles which have achieved Featured list status (e.g. Dartmouth, Jesus, Central Florida) should show how it should be done:
- 1. No honorifics of any kind.
- 2. Entries sorted alphabetically (there is absolutely no objective ordering in this article).
- 3. No duplicates (many of the entries in this article are duplicated under different categories).
- 4. Every entry has their own article (if the entry is notable enough to be included in this article they are notable enough to have their own article).
- 5. Every entry has a reference showing that the individual attended the institution (many of the references in this article don't prove that the individual attended Royal College).
- Some entries with references that don't prove that the individual attended Royal College:
- Harshana Rajakaruna, Shalitha Wijesundera, Chandana Jayakody, Ravindra Ranaweeraarachchi, Duleep Fernando, J. Charitha Ratwatte, P.H. Premawardhana, D.M.P.B.Dasanayake, B.S. Wijeweera, D.G.P. Seneviratne, Douglas V. Atapattu, K.D.R.N. Wijesinghe, Anil P. Samarasekara, Hector Weerasinghe, C.V. Wigneshwaran, S.W.B. Wadugodapitiya, P. - Finally, many of the entries with their own article don't have in-line references in their article to prove that the individual attended Royal College. Just look at the first dozen entries, they don't have in-line references. One - Charles Alwis Hewavitharana - even doesn't mention that the individual attended Royal College!--obi2canibetalk contr 21:04, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
- Completely unexecptable, as all comments here are provided based on personal prefereances of Obi2canibe and not of wikiguide lines. The majority of the articles here follow wiki guidllines on sources verifing alunmni, yet such a level of squrtiniy clearly has no possitive motives behind it. Cossde (talk) 15:18, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- They are not my preferences, they are the Wikipedia community's preferences. But preferences aren't policies. I'm no expert on Wikipedia policies but I believe this article currently follows most policies other than those on references. I don't think I'm being unreasonable to expect references provided in a list to prove that the entry qualifies to be included on the list. The references for the entries ^above^ don't do that. There are no sources verifying that they attended RC. That's not to say that they didn't - they probably did. It'd just be nice to have sources confirming this. The sources currently provided are misleading - they make the reader think that they verify the entry's attendance at RC but in fact they don't.--obi2canibetalk contr 20:25, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- To follow up on that: yes, Cossde, there must be a reference verifying that the person attended this college. If the person has a WP article, its fine for it to be there (though some people think the ref should be copied here, as well), but it must be somewhere. This article isn't being singled out--it's just that there are millions of articles on Wikipedia with problems, some of them quite drastic in nature. Editors spot ones here and there. Since you turned my attention to the other SL college articles, I just trimmed down one of those yesterday; personally, I usually satisfy myself w/just removing redlinks and unlinked, but we should go through all of the bluelinked too--it's just that it takes more time and I personally have a limit to how much effort I like to spend on these lists. Which reminds me, I should go notify the next one on that list you gave me... Qwyrxian (talk) 04:32, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
- The requirment for refs to prove that a person attended a school is a wiki requirment hence I have begun work on adding the refs needed. Cossde (talk) 10:50, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
