Irrelevant photos

[edit]

The following two photographs are not related to the Hellenic Navy:

I propose to delete them. Sv1xv (talk) 11:19, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Transliteration Question

[edit]

There are several vessels here ending in "εύς". Although the transliteration used "efs" is recognised, the more commonly used version is "eus". But I have not edited the page as there may be a convention at work here. Comments?

submarines: Protefs

tankers: Promithefs, Zefs

tugs: Persefs, Atrefs, Achillefs, Odyssefs, Thisefs

This page will of course have to remain consistent with the "Hellenic Navy" page, where the same vessels are listed. Davidships (talk) 22:38, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The "official" greek transliteration rules are with "-EFS", like "Promithefs" etc. This spelling is used in the relatively recent reference book "Hellenic Warships 1829-2001" by Vice Admiral Paizis-Paradellis (2002). However the result looks so "ugly" and unfamiliar, that we tend to use the regular english form in "-EUS". SV1XV (talk) 05:12, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The "ugly and unfamiliar" argument is irrelevant, frankly. We're aiming to preserve the real names of the ships. These aren't popular tourist destinations with which an English speaker has "familiarity"; they are actual ships at sea. If you were at sea trying to call up Προτεύς on the radio, you would ask for Protefs, not Proteus (unless, of course, you are familiar with 16th century Erasmian pronunciation rules for spellings like "eus"... which is exceedingly unlikely.) This is on doubt the reason why, as the previous user mentioned, the Hellenic Navy officially uses the "efs" spelling in English. I suggest we do the same. Clean-up

[edit]

Someone has done a clean-up of the article in 2024. There are no longer any bare URLs, so I will remove the tag. Also, I'm going to add a short description for Wikidata as it is missing. FeralOink (talk) 05:20, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
