Sketch Map
[edit]The author of the crude sketch map that is shown in the Location section asks anyone who has a better map to please replace it. At minimum, it should show the whole of Loch Alsh and Loch Duich, Kyle of Lochalsh, Eilean Donan and Shiel Bridge. Preferrably, it would give some indication of the topography of the area. Assessment request
[edit]First of all, excellent progress. The article is currently C class, and with attention to the first three issues, should be fairly easy to make up to B Class.
One of the trickier aspects of article writing is getting the lead para in good shape. It should summarise the main points and include a brief mention of each section per WP:MOS.
I am not very familiar with other sea loch articles but you need to find a different infobox. Template:Infobox Lake might work, although it is clearly designed for fresh water.
All articles should display both imperial and metric per WP:UNIT. The simplest way in my experience is to use Template:Convert and I'll provide an example.
Style issues In-inline citations should come after, not before punctuation. I will fix one as an example. Citations should include:
- for books an author, date, publisher and name, with the name of the book italicised.
- for web pages at least a name, publisher and retrieval date.
If I were reviewing this as a WP:GAC I'd be expecting more citations, for example in the "People" section.
I think it is legitimate to add Category:Highland history
See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Scottish Islands/How to write a Good Article.
I'll take a look at the details asap. Regards, Ben MacDui 11:31, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Location
- The map is actually OK, although it could do with adding the Inner Sound at top left and maybe the location of a few peaks.
- The section would benefit if you told us where it was e.g. by expanding the info in the lead here. Don't worry about the repetition here - it's probably best if you re-write the lead last.
- "from Kyle of Lochalsh, where it is spanned by the Skye Bridge, to Ardelve. From Ardelve," Is a bit clunky. First of all, it implies the bridge goes to Ardelve, secondly "to Ardelve. From Ardelve" isn't ideal.
- Shielbridge is two words I think.
- "Sgurr na Coinnich, the highest mountain on Skye"- on Sleat but not Skye.
- "The mainland hills to the north are mostly no higher than 200m - 300m." Dubious - I'll amend this.
- "the highland clearances the land remained clear for grazing." Capitals in "highland clearances". "Clear" being repeated twice isn't ideal. Ben MacDui 11:54, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
I had a quick go at the "northern hills" but it's not a very satisfactory solution I'm afraid and still needs some attention. Hopefully the edit provides some useful pointers. I'll move on to the next section when you've had a chance to look at the above. Ben MacDui 13:25, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Merging
[edit]There has been some confusion and discussion re categories relating to Skye and Lochalsh. As the district is normally Lochalsh (one word) as distinct from the loch itself, I'm going to move some of the text here to that article (and maybe some vice versa as needed).
