First Dentist?

[edit]

Searching for "First Female Dentist" on google reveals several sources that seems to refer to Emeline Robert Jones instead of Lucy Hobbs Taylor as the first female american dentist.. such as this, although referencing from other sites suggests that Emeline Robert Jones entered the practice only in 1855.

Taylor was the first to receive a doctorate in dentistry. Emeline Robert Jones and others practiced dentistry before Lucy Hobbs Taylor, leading some to label Jones as the first dentist. However, it is impossible to evaluate claims of practicing dentistry (what about the pligrim mother who pulled out her son's tooth, etc.), and it is commonly acknowledged that dentists must hold dental degrees, so, many resources label her the first american woman dentist. Of course, the claim is somewhat disputed as are most claims to be the first anything. Thanks. Cool3 19:47, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lucy Hobbs fact and quotes

[edit]

Lucy Hobbs This is a nice page on Lucy Taylor that has an interesting quote, "I am a New Yorker by birth, but I love my adopted country -- the West. To it belongs the credit of making it possible for women to be recognized in the dental profession on equal terms with men," along with a great timeline of her life.
