Regarding the Presidential Election sentence needing a citation, I might argue that it's not even true. According to the Atlas of US Presidential Elections the county voted for Bush 52.1% vs Kerry 46.8%. Granted, this is the county. Jachim69 03:20, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
Local Economy
[edit]I was wondering if there should be any reference to local business of note. An example would be Uniquely Yours Pastry Shoppe LLP, http://uypastry.com/index.html, a pastry shop that is locally owned and opperated, they place an emphasis on using natural ingridiants when ever possible and avoid mixes as they are a from scratch only backery. 68.59.231.93 18:54, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Keeping it Real
Businesses worth mentioning would be The Manitowoc Company http://www.manitowoc.com (including Manitowoc Cranes), Burger Boat Company http://www.burgerboat.com (dating back to 1846), Natural Ovens http://www.naturalovens.com, Beerntsens http://www.beerntsens.com (also a point of interest), Courthouse Pub http://www.courthousepub.com.
Politics
[edit]I think Manitowoc's "political status" as liberal, moderate, or whatever is difficult to establish, and the best way to discuss it in an encyclopedic way is simply to state the current mayor, board, etc. (is the school council partisan??). Also, the fact that the city council includes one woman and one college student doesn't merit mention in an encyclopedia article on the city, IMO. --mtz206 21:32, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Putting this under politics since it's likely controversial. Is the Teresa Halbach/Steven Avery murder case worth a mention? 20+ Million viewers who now have an opinion about Manitowoc so should probably get some sort of statement101.164.235.226 (talk) 08:10, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Points of Interest
[edit]Can we add Pinecrest Historical Village / Manitowoc County Heritage Center? http://www.mchistsoc.org
Also, the Manitowoc County Courthouse. They are in the process of raising money to restore the original glass cupola. The Courthouse and 8th Street are on the Register of Historic Places.
There is a very short street in Manitowoc named "Easy Street", if this is worthy of mention at all. 209.103.228.119 03:45, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- I strongly oppose adding that tidbit of trivia - too trivial. Royalbroil T : C 05:37, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Revision
[edit]Can someone please clean up the revision I made? It was my first time doing an information box and it came up very unclean, also the images I uploaded from www.manitowoc.org, for the city flag and seal never uploaded. --Nkreindl271 11:23, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Whomever removed the skunky hallow reference from the city nicknames, I am unsure as to why you did, it is well known that Manitowoc is skunky hallow, while Two Rivers is Carptown.
Images
[edit]I'm sorry, but this image Image:USRoute151EastTerminus.jpg really doesn't add much to the article. It is of a street, and not even a particularly interesting one. It, combined with this not-very-attractive photo of downtown Image:ManitowocWisconsin.jpg, detract from the "image" of Manitowoc, IMO. I'd suggest their removal. A much better downtown image would be of the Capital Civic Center or Beernstein's. Alas, I'm far from Mtwc, so I can't take them myself. ZimZalaBim (talk) 20:55, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
Mayor link on right info panel
[edit]The link for Mayor Kevin Crawford in the right info panel goes to Kevin Crawford, which is not the same person. Perhaps the mayor can be linked as Kevin M. Crawford?
- Done. (Feel free to be bold and edit it yourself in the future). -ZimZalaBim (talk) 06:53, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
Image problems
[edit]Could someone please tidy up the photos and information that I posted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nkreindl27 (talk • contribs)
- I just came here to see if anyone had noticed the display problems. I will fix them! Royalbroil T : C 04:06, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Religion
[edit]What is the reason for the inclusion of Father Felton's photo? I propose that it be deleted, or a photo of all other religious leaders in the community be included. I have not seen a religious leader's photo in any other city/community article. LorenzoB 12:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
- I agree. It seems out of place, and it has been vandalized too. Royalbroil T : C 14:22, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Manty.jpg
[edit]Image:Manty.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The origion of the city name Manitowoc
[edit]Question from Sammytsunami: “Manitowoc”, is a city in and the county seat of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, United States.in the state of WI. According to Wisconsin Historical Society, The first constituent, "manito," is conceded by all to be the Indian word for spirit, or mysterious influence; hence "spirit land," "devil's den," etc., have been assigned as its meaning (Wis. Hist, Colls., i, p. 117; iii, p. 337; Gannett, Place Names, p. 170. Wis. Hist, Colls., i, p. 117; iii, p. 337; Gannett, Place Names, p. 170).
According to the Wiki’s article about Manitou, Manitou is a term used to designate spirit beings among many Algonquian groups of Native Americans. Also the name of the Canadian province of Manitoba, named for Lake Manitoba in the province, derives from the place name manitou-wapow, "strait of the Manitou" in Cree or Ojibwe, referring to The Narrows at the centre of the lake.[2] Also Manitoulin Island means "spirit island".
Based on the above information, can we derive the following? 1.The word “Manito” and “Manitou” mean “spirit” 2.The word “Manitowoc” means “spirit land” 3.If the first constituent in Manitowoc, “manito” means sprit, then the second constituent “woc” could be “land” or “woods”. Need someone can help me on this subject. Sammytsumani (talk) 18:17, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Vanity edits
[edit]Wonder if the people of Manitowoc know their mayor spends his time making vanity edits on Wikipedia: [1]. I've deleted as a blatant COI. 70.235.84.154 (talk) 18:17, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
Propose external link
[edit]I was going to link to the Sanborn fire insurance maps for history buffs, but bumped into the No More Links warning. I'd be adding:
The maps certainly aren't advertising, but maybe they're not interesting to enough people? Thoughts? Jeff the quiet (talk) 00:31, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Marvel Reference
[edit]Hey, could someone add an “in popular culture” section, because Phil Coulson, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is from this town and the town is shown in the TV show “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Jlonstein (talk) 04:42, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Downtown Manitowoc
[edit]Hi all. Thoughts on adding updated information regarding the new apartments downtown, River North, as well as the most recent plans the Mayor has for revamping downtown? I've never edited an article before, so any advice is appreciated! Halie0125 (talk) 17:40, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
