Net Worth

[edit]

There seems to be some controversy about the subject's net worth and how much he claims he will donate to "charity". On WP we use the most reputable, high quality sources per WP:RS. Let's look at what the most reputable sources say:

  • "Bhargava owns 35% of 5-Hour's parent company; he pledged another 45% to charitable causes in poverty-stricken rural India." "Net Worth Over Time $1.5 Billion 2012" Forbes 2014
  • Ninety percent of my money is pledged to charity,” Bhargava said in a statement to the newspaper." Public Integrity.org
  • "In 2004, his US-based company, Living Essentials, launched an energy drink, 5-Hour Energy, and its resultant success has helped him amass a net worth of reportedly $4 billion." Economic Times 2014
  • "The documentary says his net worth is $4 billion, but Forbes does not list him among America’s richest 400 people, which includes those with at least $1.7 billion." National Geographic Oct 2015
  • "Manoj Bhargava, the founder of 5-Hour Energy, has pledged to give 99 percent of his $4 billion net worth to charity. That's the opening hook of a new documentary about Bhargava called Billions in Change." Inc. magazine Oct 2015
  • "According to the official film of ‘Billions in Change’, posted on the internet on October 4 this year, Bhargava’s net worth is over $4 billion. However, Business Standard could not independently verify the figure, as Bhargava’s company is not listed and Forbes does not feature him on its latest list of 400 rich Americans." Business Standard Oct 2015

In summary, while the film Billions In Change (funded by the subject) [1] claims a net worth of $4 billion. That figure is not verified by mainstream, reliable secondary sources.--KeithbobTalk 17:36, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. What do you suggest we do? Vignesh.Mukund (talk) 13:45, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've corrected the article to reflect the sources cited above however every few days an IP changes Bhargava's net worth in the lead and/or infobox to $4 billion. So we have to watch this and keep correcting these errors. Thanks for your help.--KeithbobTalk 19:02, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here is another relevant quote:

  • "How rich is he, really? “I have no idea,” Bhargava told me, explaining that Forbes magazine wrote he was worth was [sic] $4 billion back in 2012 and the figure stuck, even though there’s little way to put a specific valuation on his network of private companies that are not for sale. He owns 80% of his core business 5-Hour Energy, which he says might be worth $2.5 billion today, but beyond that he won’t hazard a guess at the value of his other interests." Well, looks like these unsourced additions are still happening, esp the infobox and lead which are the usual targets. I removed it after coming across this. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 09:22, 11 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Mystery" behind his wealth

[edit]

A random check on one of the sources: "The Mystery Monk Making Billions With 5-Hour Energy", Forbes, Feb 2012 shows that there are some disputes/questions about his financial dealings at the time. Quite detailed, this article. A more serious source investigation in this area might reveal something worth adding to this article, provided it passes WP:BLP of course.
