Michael Schindhelm was cleared by 2 national councils over his run-in with Secret Police in East Germany[edit]

In the German Wikipedia, you can read it. Michael Schindhelm was working for the Secret Police in East-Germany. When he was working in Basel, 2000, it was coming in all Swiss and German newspapers. But by Wikipedia, in english, you do not find any informations. In the German Wikipedia, all is good and you can read the full text. When one people make the text about the working time from Schindhelm for the East-Germany Secret Police (called Stasi), one day later, the full text is away. Please tell the things in Wikipedia english, like it is in Wikipedia German. Thanks a lot. --217.86.139.118 (talk) 06:28, 20 June 2015 (UTC)Michael Bunzel, Oberstaufen, Germany.[reply]

Schindhelm was listed by the Stasi as an 'unofficial contributor' in the 1980s. Disciplinary councils in Switzerland (2001) and Germany (2004) concurrently found that these contacts did not call into question Schindhelm's activities in public office.[1] Several major newspapers followed and covered these developments, however this was generally ignored by the tabloid press. The text which was observed to have disappeared happened because Wikipedia received evidence in the form of these newspaper articles. Wikipedia judged this to be an act of vandalism (defamation) and took it upon itself to remove it including the history of edits. It is not uncommon for Wiki to do this for pages with high rates of vandalism and they can be approached again if the vandalism gets out of hand. Title amended, added missing translated text and article link from his German page. -- TrueOrigin 14 May 2019

Proposed changes : Adding Citations to Master’s Degree (Quantum Chemistry)[edit]

Information to be added or removed: To add 3 citations under Biography > Academic studies > "master's degree in quantum chemistry.[citation needed]"; and, to change "assistant professor" to "research associate" under "From 1984 to 1986 he started his work as assistant professor for the Zentralinstitut für physikalische Chemie" -

Explanation of issue: Due to a recent change in status, I now have a conflict of interest (as family). I'd greatly appreciate if someone could check the citations I've provided and add them as appropriate.

(See "Modulleitung" - Er studierte an der Internationalen Universität Voronezh (USSR) und beendete das Studium mit dem Master of Science in Quantenchemie. Page does not appear to have an English version unfortunately)

(see last para : "Michael studied quantum chemistry and graduated from the Voronezh State University (Russia). From 1984 to 1986 he was a research associate at the Central Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin. There he worked in the Department of Theoretical Chemistry where he shared an office with Angela Merkel." Although it does not specify that it was a masters degree, it can be inferred as 1) it was a prerequisite to becoming a research associate at the Berlin Academy of Sciences' department of physical chemistry, and 2) Quantum Chemistry was only available as postgraduate studies at Voronezh State University.)

@MJL:No, I'm not being paid or compensated. It's my independent decision. I gave the COI reason @ para 2 of the original edit req (under my prev username). Hope that clears things up.

Hi @Starbeamer: here is a response to your request below:
1) Unfortunately, the sources you provided are not reliable sources. The stars, dokweb and TEDTalk sources do not have an editorial board, so I am unsure where they got this information. The university sources are bios for courses or course modules, so again I do not know how reliable they are. Some useful places to find his bio are in academic journals (sometimes a bio accompanies their article), a profile of him in a media source or in a review of his documentaries or publications.
2) Again, I cannot add this information because of the concerns about the sources, as stated above.
If you have any questions, please use the help desk or post below. You can open a new request by following the instructions at Template:Request edit/Instructions. Thanks and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 21:04, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. Quick questions before I put another one up - Are Theatre der Zeit (bio), Springer VS (textbook) or Issuu magazine (documentary review) considered reliable sources? And, would you know how the original Wikian author put in assistant professor without needing to cite? Appreciate it Starbeamer (talk) 00:19, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Starbeamer: I am not sure if the sources would be reliable. Can you post a link or send me an email with those articles? As for the second question, Wikipedia allows anyone to edit and sometimes editors add information without citing sources. It is great that you noticed this error and are working to fix this issue. The reason why I am so picky about having reliable sources is that this allows your changes to remain in the article. Weak sources lead to editors challenging and reverting edits, and this is more likely to happen when edits were proposed by a person with a conflict of interest. Strong sources lead to fewer problems in the future. Z1720 (talk) 00:42, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Z1720: fair enough. Here’s the 3 respective links - [1][2][3] (quantum chemistry degree). Or I could send a copy of his actual degree somewhere, only if it would help. There’s a 4th [4] (researcher), but it has to be inferred from "Merkel (was) the most serious researcher in the theoretical-chemistry section" and "In 1984, Schindhelm and Merkel began sharing an office". I could instead propose to change “assistant professor” to, eg. “worked in the theoretical-chemistry research office with Merkel". Not sure if I can get a hold of the declassified staff list. Thanks again! Starbeamer (talk) 17:01, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Starbeamer: I will use Social Life Magazine as the source. Please do not send a copy of his degree, that can be considered WP:OUTING and we prefer information is verified by a secondary source. I cannot use the fourth source to verify this information because, per WP:SYNTH, Wikipedia only documents what other sources say about a subject; editors should not infer or come to their own conclusions. I have added in the reference. Please check and make sure it was added correctly. Thanks! Z1720 (talk) 19:37, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Z1720: Works great. Thank you for vetting the links and adding the reference. I appreciate your dedication and attention to detail.
