Ali Zawa = Choukri?

[edit]

I've both read 'For bread alone' and watched the film 'Ali Zawa' and I can't recall any similarities among both. I'ts really not the same story, not even remotely related to. Did somebody assert that? If somebody (relevant) did, citation is needed. If not, I think I'd delete it. Wait for your opinions.

I also have read both the book and watched the film, and there is absolutely nothing to connect both, except the fact that both are about street children. Also, Ali Zawa is set in Casablanca, and Choukri's scenario is Tanger. I guess I'll remove that part. Ilyacadiz (talk) 20:44, 26 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Censorship

[edit]

'For bread alone' was censored in Morocco, that is common knowledge. I recall an interview with Choukri, however, where he told that the book was never actually forbidden, but just every editor knew that it would bring him trouble, that was a kind of censorship, but no official decision to ban the book was ever issued. Choukri then went on telling that, when he gathered the earnings from English and French editions, he did publish the book himself, paying for it, in an Arabic edition, somewhat in the 80'ies I think. It was not banned then, it was just a very small edition which sold immediately. The year 2000 may be correct as the first publication in a commercial publisher, but probably without an official ban being lifted. I will try to check the accuracy in a few weeks. Or has anybody got a sure source about the official ban? The wording of the sentence 'Basri decided to ban the book after consulting...' sounds as some well-established fact. Please check.
