Request for comment: poverty and crime statements
[edit]Could someone tell me - is this warranted? Is it NPV or am I being overly protective of where I live?
I could live with it if there was a link to a reference page (eg: ABS website backing up rate of poverty & crime?)
The section I mean is: It is commonly known as an area with a high rate of poverty and crime. In 1996, Year 12 students at Mt Druit High School were deemed by the Daily Telegraph to have failed the HSC.

Anon: Crime, Poverty
[edit]I think it needs a little about the crime and poverty, And Islander gangs are spreading throught the area.

- Well I don't think I can dispute you. But as you don't provide a citation then hey you are hardly stating anything which can be included in the article.
- Go ahead and quote the NSW Police statistics, THEN make your statement on the article.Garrie 00:10, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Why is it MOUNT druitt?
[edit]I know where Druitt comes from. It's even well discussed in the article. But Mount Druitt is almost as flat as the Hay Plains - where is the mound/hill/mountain? (I live there and it's bugging me. It should be in the article! most readers would assume there's a wopping big hill in the middle of the suburb).
history
[edit]history section seems quite lacking. Steven Fitter 00:27, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. Got any suggestions? Personally I have beenn looking quite a bit but I'm having trouble finding much online. I dread actually having to go to a library and talk to the historical society....
- I am including the bullet pointed section on Govt Services to provide some skeleton to pad out with information such as the opening of the new court house, etc. Maybe if there is a section there for the NSW Police then that opens the door for a discussion regarding the perception of the crime problem in the area. I am having trouble getting stats on that also.

Predjudiced Claim: Majority housing commission accomodation
[edit]This sounds wrong to me. From ABS, 2001 census, Table B19:
Suburb | Rented: Public | Fully owned | Being purchased |
---|---|---|---|
Bidwell: | 59.7% | 12.0 % | 13.7 % |
Blackett: | 32.2% | 24.2 % | 23.7 % |
Emerton: | 26.7% | 21.3 % | 31.5 % |
Mount Druitt (suburb)): | 2.1% | 30.6% | 23.9 % |
Tregear: | 40.4% | 20.1 % | 19.9 % |
Whalan: | 36.9% | 25.3 % | 20.5 % |
Wilmott: | 37.1% | 21.1 % | 24.7 % |
From the above list of stats only one suburb has a majority of housing as "housing commission" housing. That view is a negative stereotype of Westie and is factually incorrect. Houses listed as being purchased are houses under private ownership with the title held by a mortgagee - so overall prive home ownership is fairly reasonable compared to the Sydney Statistical Division average. I will remove the phrase
Most of the housing located in this area is State Government owned housing (commonly referred to as Housing Commission homes).
and insert the phrase
Despite stereotyped beliefs, the majority of housing in the Mount Druitt area is under private ownership or mortage arrangement.

Crime Rates???
[edit]EVERYONE in Sydney knows that Mt Druitt is barely safe to walk around in. My sister once lived there, and she said it was scary because of the crime, junkies, islander gangs etc. I cannot believe this article does not mention ANYTHING about Mt Druitt's notorious crime rates.--124.168.0.253 (talk) 23:10, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
Demography
[edit]Lol ok how come no one seems to have spotted the demographics section changed to "The 2001 City of Blacktown Social Plan identified that a high portion of Mount Druitt residents are bogans, and that they tend not to work at all.[9] These statements are backed up by the 2006 census conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It states that 46% of Mount Druitt's 13,583 residents were stoned, more than double the national average, with 10.6% just high, 3.3% sloshed and 3.2% were hammered" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.92.117.21 (talk) 05:55, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Mount Druitt, New South Wales → Mount Druitt – ",New South Wales" is superfluous here when it's the primary topic. Also see [1] for a similar situation. Till I Go Home 09:29, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- I would really just go ahead and move this yourself. The conventions for Australian place names changed after discussions in 2010. In cases where the settlement's name is the primary topic, the default now is to title them without the state name. Osiris (talk) 15:13, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
