Issues

[edit]

This article has already survived AfD, several experience editors including DGG have participated in the discussion and agree that NPOV, NOTURDANDICTIONARY, and notability are not issues. If anyone sees any issues please make them known on the talk page before tagging. Valoem talk contrib 18:24, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The AfD only ended in "no consensus," not a clear keep. Even if it did end in a keep, that's not evidence that the article has no issues that need improvement.
Specifically: 1) It's written like an Urban Dictionary article, which is not acceptable encyclopedic style. 2) It's a disparaging term/slur and written from the POV of someone who would use it to disparage someone. It doesn't have the appropriate encyclopedic distance or neutrality. 3) It may still not meet notability standards; to quote the AfD's closing admin: "[w]hether this is indeed a word that is sufficiently notable as an encyclopedic subject is another question, one that has not been answered definitely in this discussion." I'm restoring the tags. Please do not remove them unless the issues are actually addressed. - GretLomborg (talk) 20:14, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In 2005 is was deemed no consensus defaults to keep. When stating it is written like an Urban Dictionary definition it must be explained why. This term is written in an encyclopedic format which states what the term means and the subject which it defines. As per WP:WORDISTHESUBJECT.
Your second argument states written from the POV of someone who would use it to disparage someone, needs explanation, the term is negative and frequently used in the form defined. If you feel it doesn't meet GNG you can renominated it or go to DRV. The article does need expansion and improvement. Valoem talk contrib 22:11, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed... it reads like a bad Urban Dictionary entry. PurpleChez (talk) 16:46, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Awful article

[edit]

This remains a really poor quality stub. For example: the use of the phrase "associated with neck hair growth". Neck hair growth is part of overall beard growth, and is completely normal in post-pubertal male human beings. Perhaps what is meant here is "forgetting to shave your neck when shaving"?

Moreover, examination of historical photographs from the 19th century shows that a neck beard seems to have been an entirely deliberate facial hair style of the time: see for example, portraits of Richard Wagner, Henry David Thoreau and Horace Greeley. -- The Anome (talk) 08:37, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree I don't think this term always meant to be negative, I'm not native English speaker but first time I notice this term was one of Bryan Lunduke video series Linux Sucks I can't remember what video was but one of the talks he was thinking Linux will falls is lake of Neckbeard_in the room(as joke) --Salem F (talk) 19:44, 16 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Long, uncited list in the end of the first paragraph

[edit]

That part needs cleanup, I don’t know if I need a citation needed or an issue. I don’t think it’s necessary wrong, though. in my opinion, unless it has sources, it should be removed. 1ctinus📝🗨 01:47, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This part of the article:
The "neckbeard" stereotype is also associated with comic books, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Otaku subculture, movies, animated TV series, fedora or trilby hats, 4chan, Bronies, Steam, the Nintendo Entertainment System, atheism and memorabilia collecting.

Agreed - it reads more like urban dictionary than Wikipedia, and certainly should require some sourcing. I am boldly removing it.--Mojo Hand (talk) 23:14, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Atheist and Fedora

[edit]

Should we add that neckbeards have been used to describe internet atheists? Because I’ve noticed it’s missing from the article. Did I forget to mention the fedora?Teertrevo (talk) 19:10, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you can provide reliable sources that demonstrates common usage of the term to describe atheists, then it can be added. If you're just trying to sandwich in the term based on some lame Redditt thread, then no. -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 19:18, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ponyo I don’t know if you have noticed this, but the article previously mentioned atheism as one of the descriptions. I’m happy to discuss it more with you.Teertrevo (talk) 19:36, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it was previously mentioned by you, and a sockpuppet account. Unless you can meet the reliable sourcing criteria mentioned above, the discussion is a non-starter.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 19:43, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ponyo I am not talking about that I am talking about the talk post above this one. It used to say this “The "neckbeard" stereotype is also associated with comic books, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Otaku subculture, movies, animated TV series, fedora or trilby hats, 4chan, Bronies, Steam, the Nintendo Entertainment System, atheism and memorabilia collecting.” I didn’t write that. I didn’t make a account until August 2021. This is from July 2021. Teertrevo (talk) 19:53, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Which doesn't change anything other than to further show the inclusion of your preferred content doesn't have consensus.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 20:02, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In the course of the 2010s, the neckbeard stereotype also increasingly came to be associated with antifeminists and the manosphere. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 23:57, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
