Notes

First settled by John Cooke, Sr. who set up residence near the forks of Laurel Creek and Clear Fork.
County Seat of Wyoming County from 1850 to 1907.
Originally named Cassville, but later renamed to Sumpterville in 1851 because another settlement was also calling itself Cassville, creating confusion for the mails.
In 1853, the town changed names again, this time to Oceana, in honor of Chief Cornstalk's youngest daughter.
In November 7, 1907, fire destroyed much of the town including the courthouse, jail, and a bank.
