Notes

[edit]
  • First settled by John Cooke, Sr. who set up residence near the forks of Laurel Creek and Clear Fork.
  • County Seat of Wyoming County from 1850 to 1907.
  • Originally named Cassville, but later renamed to Sumpterville in 1851 because another settlement was also calling itself Cassville, creating confusion for the mails.
  • In 1853, the town changed names again, this time to Oceana, in honor of Chief Cornstalk's youngest daughter.
  • In November 7, 1907, fire destroyed much of the town including the courthouse, jail, and a bank.
