Oxley Creek Source
[edit]This article claims that Mount Perry is the source of the creek in the Scenic Rim, but Mount Perry is neither in the Scenic Rim nor is it the source of the creek. Could someone please rectify this? 118.208.217.171 (talk) 11:56, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
Agreed, and I've just removed the link to the incorrect one. If anyone wants to know, the Mt Perry they should have linked to is at -27.776503, 152.812843 - there's a trail map here: https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/mt-perry-summit-hike-from-undullah-rd-side-108867040 (it's from the rather good Jelbuilder YT minor celebrity who does lots of treks around SEQ, so his info is probably reasonable as a source). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.102.10.37 (talk) 06:40, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
It's partially OR, but the actual source of Oxley Creek appears to be -27.793478, 152.824489 which would be about 2km east south east of "Mt Perry". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.102.10.37 (talk) 06:42, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Well, I think your coords are very close. I used the Qld Globe (the Qld Govt's geospatial system so as authoritative as you are likely to get) with the "watercourse" layer enabled, which enables you to follow a watercourse upstream through all its segments to see where the naming starts (which is what I use for the "source" of a creek/river. For Oxley Creek, the most upstream named segment begins at -27.79187,152.82509 whereas the point you nominated is one segment upstream from this and is unnamed according to the Qld Globe. And we can cite the Qld Globe as a source. Now is Mount Perry relevant to the Oxley Creek story? Yeah, it's in the general, area but I don't think Oxley Creek flows down along its slopes in any way. If you turn on the "Drainage basin sub-area", you will see that Oxley Creek is in the Brisbane River sub-basin (ok, no surprises at that news) but just west of the start of Oxley Creek (with either your coords or mine) is the Bremer RIver sub-basin and just south of it is the Logan River sub-basin, so Oxley Creek begins very close to a triple watershed. Mount Perry is within the Bremer River sub-basin, meaning there is a ridgeline that separates Mount Perry from the Oxley Creek source. So Mount Perry really has nothing to do with Oxley Creek other than being a nearby place name relative to where Oxley Creek rises. I think it's better just to use the coords and not suggest Mount Perry has a role to play in it. Kerry (talk) 08:58, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
