Nonsense in the intro

[edit]

The following sentence in the intro is nonsensical:

"These genes stop and start cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) by adding or removing phosphate groups."

These genes discussed in the paragraph code for the cyclin-dependent kinase, whose job it is to phosphorylate other proteins to advance the cell cycle. CDKs do not remove phosphates from anything. That is the job of phosphatases.

Cyclins, mentioned above but not in this paragraph, regulate CDKs by binding to them and repositioning them so they can bind ATP, whose phosphates CDK uses. Cyclins also have domains that determine which substrates CDKs phosphorylate, and where in the cell they congregate.

The citation following the quote does not say what the quote says. Paul Nurse might cringe if he read this.

Rated start class for the following reasons:
  • No photograph
  • Lacks inline references
  • Some information on research interests, but could be expanded and references required
  • Useful material on awards
  • Lacks appropriate subheadings
  • Extensive collection of external links which could be used to expand article
