Factually Correct
Does anyone know if the edits by 167.219.0.143 are factually correct? Suppafly 18:12, 29 September 2005 (UTC) They are correcct based on census information reported in both the Peoria Journal Star, and WMBD websites when census was conducted.
Some of the stats mentioned on http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=6555 contradict some of the numbers in this article. Suppafly 18:14, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
- The link mentioned is for Peoria County. The stats are from the US Census for City of Peoria, which is only part of the County. The MSA was recently updated to include Stark and Marshall counties based on 2000 census tracking.
External Links
Why is both external links Discover Peoria and The Greater Peoria Region keep on being eliminated from external links?? They actually provide excellent information on the community to supplement the article on Wikipedia.
- I've noticed this but don't particularly have an opinion yet. But, for what it's worth, check out Wikipedia:External links for more info. Friday (talk) 19:10, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- Upon looking a bit more, I don't see anything blatantly inappropriate about these links myself. BTW, if you sign up for an account, it'll be easier to communicate with others. Friday (talk) 19:22, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- Ohh, bad brenneman. I just deleted them again and then saw this discussion, sorry. Normally I'd leave them on once there was some talk happening. As to why I've deleted them (a few times) both of these links are advertisements. Well done, informative perhaps, but advertisements none the less.
brenneman(t)(c) 03:45, 15 October 2005 (UTC)- I agree that these links appear to be advertisements more than informative resources. Suppafly 21:04, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Although there is some marketing ploy to theselinks, there is also additional factual information on the area. They were designed to promote and educate both non-Peorians and Peorians on the area. I don't see why this is inappropriate.
Bloody Mess
Bloody Mess isn't really notable outside of the peoria area. Suppafly 02:54, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- I'll buy that. I've
replaced it with a reference to my own bandremoved the line mentioning him. Friday (talk) 14:46, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
Sam Kinison
I believe Sam Kinison was actually from East Peoria, and certainly went to East Peoria Community High School, but is widely reported to be "from Peoria". Probably needs some research to determine whether he lived in Peoria or just was associated with it because nobody outside of Central Illinois cared about the distinction. --Closeapple 06:32, 2004 Oct 18 (UTC
- I have lived in Peoria county most of my life, Sam Kinison is from East Peoria.George 02:35, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Clean-up needed
The intro is too long, the lists have too many red-links and are too long, and the whole thing could use a copy-edit. I'm happy to bring the machete to bear, but I'd prefer if someone who knows more anything about the subject does it. - brenneman{T}{L} 09:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- ditto —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thechitowncubs (talk • contribs)
- That first pre-section introduction wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the unwikified, non-NPOV type of stuff stuff in the middle paragraphs. (For those not native to Peoria: Nearly all of the expansions and improvements discussed in those unwikified paragraphs are still controversial, for example.) What's left could probably be moved to a new section. --Closeapple 09:34, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- While I am proud of my community, I felt the same way about the obvious advertising in the introductory paragraphs. The information can be used, but it needs to be reworded into a new secction, something like "Planned develpment for Peoria" George 02:43, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Central Illinois Agency on Aging, Inc.
This message is for Rklawton. Earlier today you deleted two postings. One included an addition of history to Peoria. I don't have a problem with that, as it is redundant. However, I wish to post my agency's services on this site, and do not believe it is appropriate that this be deleted. This is a non-profit agency devoted to assisting senior citizens, and a legitimate posting on this site. Please respond ASAP. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ciaa (talk • contribs)
- Please notice that this encyclopedic article is about the city of Peoria, Illinois. It is not about your corporation's services. Following your logic, this article would quickly become the "Peoria Yellow Pages." Please also notice that we add new comments to the bottom of talk pages. Please also notice that we sign each posting with four tilde's. Rklawton 20:28, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Lead photo
It appears to be a postcard, and has no licensing details. It would be good if either we got a GFDL photo or some details on this one.
brenneman(t)(c) 23:20, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
- It's certainly copyrighted, I assume the pic was downloaded from http://www.duryea-peoria.com/now&thn2.htm , there is an email address on that site for Dr. Joe Couri who is the copyright holder, perhaps someone can email him. Suppafly 18:37, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
Can someone post a photo of Downtown Peoria preferably at night. there are several photos available tat are quite attractive however I do not know how to do this or obtain them?
- It's not a matter of figuring out how to upload a nice picture. The trick is finding a nice photo that isn't copyrighted. Rklawton 16:44, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Name This Peoria Landmark
Rklawton- I can see why you wouldn't want traditional blogs listed, but I think if you look into this, you may change your mind. It's not a blog, per se, but a living and breathing photo essay and discussion of Peoria. I suggest you look at the site again and read some of the comments. Please explain why this is not worthy, because I certainly don't understand.
http://namethispeorialandmark.blogpeoria.com/
- I looked at your pics and I have to say that while interesting and even amusing, the blog isn't appropriate as a refernce. However, if you were to devote some webspace to only pictures of Peoria landmarks with appropriate captions :) that would be an excellent addition to the article.George 03:29, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
After 79 pics (I'm sure you looked at them all and read the user comments as well) with many more to come, I would like to know what you think are appropriate captions. The fact that people, through comments, are engaged and give insight into the history of Peoria should mean something to you.
- Appropriate captions and pictures actually. For instance there is a pictureof someone's backyard, the entrance to the Air show and one of some aircraft. These are not landmarks. Also, WP is not intended to be loose and easygoing, like a blog. This is an encyclopedia and we want it to appear as such. I think if you read this you will understand better what is expected in external references. Please don't get discouraged, hang around and contribute, and when you have time read up on some of the information in the WP:Manual of style. Welcome to wikipedia! George 13:22, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Fair enough.
Missing history
Lots of missing history in the 20th century. I found some sources that indicated Peoria's population in 1974 was about 140,000, compared to 112,000 now. Interesting case study in population emigration that should be looked at. —Rob (talk) 17:05, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, the article in a whole has more than a few structure issues. I'll try to address. —Rob (talk) 12:06, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- two words and two reasons - Union strike / economic turndown ... devastated the population and economy
Planned development?
Any reason this is here, and not in their respective sections? I'm moving the transportation sections first, but the rest are well on their way. I feel that chronologically grouping concepts in an article belongs in a newspaper, not necessarily Wikipedia. —Rob (talk) 16:28, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- I seem to remember that the planned development was thrown into some other section by someone who didn't seem all that concerned about where it went, and having a new section was marginally less irritating than having it where it was before. I think this section has also been deleted or overhauled before as being non-NPOV, and somehow came back. I agree that whichever parts (if any) of the "Planned development" section can withstand Wikipedia guidelines for future events should probably be in the appropriate other sections. --Closeapple 22:38, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Intro
I moved a paragraph from the "Culture" section to the intro section. This is why most people have heard of Peoria; I think that it is important for the importance of the city to be stated in the beginning of the article, rather than the end.gloria 04:58, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
David Ogden Stiers and Aaron Schneider
Just a note: Although David Ogden Stiers and Aaron Schneider may have been technically born in Peoria, they were also residents of nearby Chillicothe, Illinois. My parents remember that Stiers's father ran a hardware store in Chillicothe for a while, and Schneider graduated from IVC High School (class of 1983--he was a senior when I was a freshman, and my freshman yearbook has pictures of him). I copied these two over to the Chillicothe, Illinois page but didn't delete them here, pending verification that they also lived in Peoria as well as Chillicothe. --Photonex68 01:11, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Chillicothe is just north of the city of Peoria - so no real difference here. Should be in both.
du Sable
This page says Maillet sold a Peoria house to du Sable in 1773. But the link for du Sable says he built his first house in Chicago in 1770. It says he sold that Chicago house to Kinzie in 1800 and went to Peoria. Does this mean he had houses in Chicago and Peoria for over 25 years? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.142.130.42 (talk) 21:54, 12 March 2007 (UTC).
Economy and Tourisim
tourism should be deleted and I have tried to do this. this is an opinion and not a fact on tax creating a downward tend in tourism. In fact, sports tourism is causing an increase in hotel rooms going up in Peoria and East Peoria. this includes four additional hotels including a large Embassy Suites.
Eceonomy - Economy has been stable if not on a slight upswing. the Bradley Scout is far from a reliable source for this type of data. The business quoted "The Lucky Lady Saloon" is actually not in the City of Peoria, but in the suburb of West Peoria, therefore under different zoning and local codes. This highly popular university bar had several problems causing its closing and restructure. A single bar is far from a reliable indicator of the overall economy where international, national, and local firms exists. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 167.219.0.140 (talk) 16:04, 9 May 2007 (UTC).
citations
As to all the citations needed tabs for notable persons connected to Peoria, I would suggest that they be removed in all cases where the article to which they are linked contains the relevant information in its body or citations or links. No need for them in those cases, and it just makes the section look ugly.--Epeefleche 18:22, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
In regards to citations, how does one get this notice off?? I have tried to place links to satisfy Wiki that this content is factual but it does not seem to stick. In regards to all those listed as needing citations - all of this is factual but I understand the concern. Many of the websites noted in article will substantiate these facts as well as other websites. PLease direct me to an area where I can get information on ensuring these facts are not eliminated by providing the proper link for verification. this would include all the notable people as well. Thanks!
- To Epeefleche, while unaesthetic it may be they shouldn't be removed unless the article on that person is sufficiently referenced. The reason I say this is because not too long ago, while working on a collaboration for the Springfield, Illinois page I ran across the article on Morris Day, born in Springfield, which incorrectly asserted he was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, (see diff), so before removing any tags it is important to make sure that the referred to article is accurate. Just my two cents. IvoShandor 17:52, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Media
I was wondering what is the deal with the media section. I created the media section on the main page, before the page was very lengthy. It has since been moved to a new page called Media_in_metropolitan_Peoria. I noticed that an anonymous person added only the television and part of the newspaper section back to the main page. There is also a radio section that should be included. I'd like to see the complete section either on the main page or in a separate page. I just was wondering what would be the proper thing to do. Thanks, Netchris 20:09, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Dick Versace
Former Bradley U and Memphis Grizzlys basketball coach Dick Versace announced he is running for congress. Rumor has it he will be running against Aaron Schock, who is a republican. I really don't know where or how to include that, if at all. George 13:06, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Irish Community in and around Peoria
My grandparents and family genealogists told me that Peoria once had a very large, thriving community of Irish immigrants. I believe this was especially true after the famines. I have great- and great-great grandparents from Ireland who, after arriving in New York, Boston or Philadelphia, specifically headed to Peoria because of the large Irish community there. From family stories, it also seems that Irish Gaelic was still spoken in the community, at least for a period of time after the major waves of immigration. Yet I've found almost nothing about this on the Internet. If anyone knows of any other sources on this, I would love to hear them, and incorporate them into this, and other, Wikipedia articles. I will also go through our family records and see what I can add, but I'd like to have some additional sources on this. --Kathryn NicDhàna 21:48, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Climate Data
We need a little more credible climate data. While the temperatures look pretty accurate, I don't think it's possible to have even "trace amounts" of average snowfall in, say June and July. For example, July's record low was 47, but on average there is a tiny bit of snowfall? I don't think so. Can't we use NWS or Weather Channel data or something? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.134.244.18 (talk) 18:51, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- I noticed this, too. I fixed it earlier, but someone changed it back. I fixed it again this time citing NOAA http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ilx/climate/snopmon.php which says no snow has been recorded, ever, in Peoria in June, July, or August. Bluecollarchessplayer (talk) 05:22, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- Unlikely or "has never been recorded" does not mean impossible. It's the Midwest... if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and pretty much anything can happen. --Winger84 (talk) 07:04, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Will it play in Peoria
Has anyone outside of central Illinois EVER heard this stupid expression? As a (greater) Peoria native, I've heard it many times, but I've never seen it used in any remote form of pop culture, ever. It seems like a way for locals, in denial that they would be living in a cornfield if it wasn't for a certain manufacturer of yellow tractors, to think they live in a more significant part of America than they really do. I think we should stop embarassing ourselves and remove it from the article, pronto. Who's with me?
- I was watching a laurel and hardy movie Circa 1940? Hardy says "lets go back to Peoria" at the end of the movie. Peoria was a well known theater town in that day. The place was a mob 'vacation' spot. Chicago gangsters came down here to get away from conflict. Peoria was neutral territory. That is where all the money for theater shows came from. Regardless, it is an historical fact that Will it play in Peoria? was a commonly used phrase during the vaudeville era. Civic pride or embarrassment aside. George 12:01, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Just today, May 17, an AP article dealing with moving the Illinois primary up due to the fact the Illinois most closley mirrors Amerca as a whole. In this article, Peoria was mentioned as an important indicator due to the dempographics of the city and suburbs. It is still being uses as a test market for severl large and small corporations was also mentioned. In sumamry, the makeup of Peoria from a diveristy, economic, and educational base closely mirrors that of the US in total, therefore the saying is still be used and is justified
- Oh yeah, there is no doubt that it is used like [1] and the one you mentioned here [2].--Kranar drogin 21:19, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
I know for a fact that the expression is still used in commentary and the media (although not incredibly heavily). The CNBC show, "The Big Idea" even featured a repeating segment on Peoria where they saw if products would "play in Peoria" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.180.142.59 (talk) 17:52, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Thomeville
According to WGN news, Peoria will be known as Thomeville for thirty days because he hit a home run so the Sox-somehow-made it to the playoffs. That can't be allowed! A town that is the home of a Cubs minor league team is temporarily named after a White Sox player. Seattle should Santo City when he is inducted to the Hall of Fame. I feel sorry for Cubs fans there. Tomorrow, they're probably going to reveal that it was a joke.Cedargang (talk) 03:00, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
WikiProject Illinois Collaboration
Clean Up and Expansion
I am going to be working to try and clean up this article, and try and get it to at least GA status after feeling comfortable with how it looks. It has now been marked as being the Illinois Project collaboration. All new additions to the article from this point forward will have to be cited. Anything that isn't sited will in most cases be removed if a citation isn't found. We highly encourage people that watch this page to join us, and if anyone in the Peoria area would like to take photos, we are going to need some down the road (not as of this moment though).--Kranar drogin 10:41, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- One thing I noticed is that there are a lot of lists. These are going to have to be worked into the article. Also, we are going to have to create a seperate page for the history section since this is way too much info on the main page. Will get back at it tonight.--Kranar drogin 11:12, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- Gotta finish up some of my townships I had started. The maps I created keep getting hit with "orphan" tags. So give me a couple days and I will be back. Will help a little bit as we go along.--Kranar drogin 19:08, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Famous People
I have removed the following list from the main page:
- John Daker - local vocalist shown on a widely-circulated Internet clip[citation needed]
- Jon Ginoli - guitarist and singer: Pansy Division[citation needed]
- Jeffrey Hall - Lawyer[citation needed]
- Jim Jordan and Marian Jordan - stars of Fibber McGee and Molly on radio[citation needed]
- Pip Lilly - actor and comic writer The Second City Comedy Troupe and Straight & Nappy[citation needed]
- Ryan Martini (aka Rino) - Bass Player from Mudvayne[citation needed]
- Michael Antony Pierce - actor[citation needed]
- Andrew Rex - physicist and author[citation needed]
- Aaron Schneider - film maker: recipient of the 2003 Academy Award for Live Action Short Film for Two Soldiers[citation needed]
- Michael Somerville - musician, songwriter[citation needed]
- Gravel Bath - indie rock band[citation needed]
- Keith Blake - actor[citation needed]
Some of them possibly could be kept, but for the most part if they do not have a Wiki entry, then they shouldn't be on the list. Not only that, but if you hvae a band, you don't need to list every single member either. Later, this list will be expanded into paragraphs instead of a lsit of people. So if anyone knows reasons why these people should stay, speak up now, or create a page for them and cite your sources. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 21:49, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Fibber McGhee and Molly were famous in early radio and should be included. There is a section in Wiki about them stating they were native illinoisians. If you go to the website link below in the wiki external sources and pull that up, it states they were a real husband and wife team from Peoria, Illinois. they should be added back.
Nancy Brinker
I think anyone in Peoria will tell you that Nancy Brinker who started the global breast cancer movement IN Peoria is not trumpery. She is well known in the community. Peoria is ground zero for the creation of the breast cancer movement that has changed the world and since raised billions of dollars. If her picture is not there then there should be no pictures of any other famous Peoria people. 35,000 people show up each year to support her event in Peoria and the promise made in Peoria between her and her sister. Race for the Cure is the largest fundraiser in the area. The pic has been there for over a year with no change by other editors. Tb, please discuss with others before removing. This editor who removed the picture has some kind of personal issue with Brinker and has made all kinds of changes on Wiki calling her work trumpery without any discussion--74.73.171.166 (talk) 13:42, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- You are one of a series of IP editors who have edited Wikipedia solely for the purpose of increasing the visibility and reported importance of Brinker. Of course she should be listed. But her photo need not be there, it contributes nothing to an understanding of Peoria to know what Brinker looks like. To see the absurdity, consider if everyone who is an important former resident of Peoria were there in photo. (As for whether Shalikashvili's photo should be there, I have no argument to removing it also if you wish to do so, for the same reasons.) And your clumsiness is typical of the Brinkerist IP editor person(s) [are you Brinker? do you have any personal connection with her?]: you reverted two edits, one which you don't bother to note here. Tb (talk) 18:16, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- I agree thanks Tb for cleaning this up. I used to work for her at State Dept but no connection.--74.73.171.166 (talk) 19:29, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

I am afraid of this article. The history section should be condensed to a section with no subsections. Kranar noted the lists. I still don't like those climate tables, that we put in here and Springfield, they are too bulky, something more like the historic pop. table, that blends into the text, would be much better. I don't know if all the future building tags are necessary, especially in an article on the city which really shouldn't say too much more than "the building is being built." IvoShandor 16:51, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, the future building tags should be in the actual article about the building, if one is or has been created. If those were in all the other articles about the actual building, it just clutters up the pages as we see now. SO we should remove them, but in the paragraph about it we just say in there that it is in the processs of being built or is a project in the works.--Kranar drogin 17:49, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Here's an attempt at a taller version of the climate box. I'm sure the colors could be added, but I personally find them a bit loud. It can go on the left or right and the text should wrap around. Someone may want to double check the numbers since I typed them in manually. --Dual Freq 02:09, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
- I do like that a lot better, is there a way to "scrunch" them a little closer together and not have a space between each line?--Kranar drogin 02:14, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
- cellpadding="2" or cellpadding="1" seem to reduce the spacing. class="wikitable" instead of class="toccolours" would make gridlines. --Dual Freq 02:27, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
I deleted the into business economy section since the quote mentioned regarding the Lucky Lady Saloon is not actually in te City of Peoria, but in the town of West Peoria. this appears to be an overall opinion on one person. Actually, jobs have increased in the area. also, deleted Tourisin section as well. this again is someone's opinion on the tax - apparently not in favor of it. Never read any material on decliing tourism or the impact on this tax.
local affiliates of national organizations
An IP editor, known for trumpery of Nancy Brinker, decided that the local Peoria affiliate of Komen for the Cure should be listed as "well-known." I objected. I believe this and the local Junior League should not be listed here for the simple reason that the local affiliates are not well-known nationally. Clearly we are not going to list every local non-profit organization in Peoria. The section currently includes such companies of world-wide importance as ADM, Caterpillar, and RLI. The local Junior League, or the local branch of a nationwide charity headquartered elsewhere, is not of the same level of notability or importance, and shouldn't be here. Tb (talk) 02:54, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Komen in the lead
An anonymous IP editor whose sole wikipedia interest has been adding Brinker and Komen to as many pages as possible, has decided that Komen belongs in the lead to this article. The current individuals or organizations mentioned in the lead with Peoria connections are the current US Secretary of Transportation, and Caterpillar, Inc. Komen, by contrast, is the namesake of an important charity--not headquarted in Peoria--and nowhere near the level of importance of either a current US Cabinet Secretary or a Dow Jones listed corporation the size of Caterpillar. I believe it is inappropriate to list every Peoria-connected person in the lead, and can see no reason for Komen to be singled out above all others. Tb (talk) 03:02, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- TB, I'm not sure I agree with you. Susan G. Komen is a major icon in Peoria. I visit often and you hear references to her all over town. They even put something about it in the annual report for the City. Prob should not be in the lead but the fact the global breast cancer movement started in Peoria is important. This was the place the "promise" was made. I'll find sources and create a new section. --Ues123 (talk) 03:59, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps the thing to do then is to say something about that--I'd have no problem with such info, properly sourced--but not in the lead. The focus should be on the breast cancer movement, and not drawing more attention to Brinker. My point is this: if you ask people if they've heard of Caterpillar, a huge number say yes. If you ask people if they've heard of the US Department of Transportation, they say yes. If you ask who Komen is, you hear a much smaller number. She may be hugely famous in Peoria, but the point of the lead is to explain the national importance of Peoria, not to highlight people who--however famous in Peoria--are not as famous on a world-wide basis. A brief referenced mention of the breast cancer movement would be relevant, but not a big section, not in the lead, and parallel with the prominence given other topics of similar importance. And, finally, I'd appreciate hearing from users who didn't create accounts purely for commenting on this one case. So far, there is no consensus for the change. Tb (talk) 07:06, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
TB, do you have data that shows Komen's name recognition is low in the US? Please do share! Thanks for your contributions. You are having such a big impact on our world. --98.214.119.95 (talk) 10:49, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think it goes the other way. If you want to say that Komen's importance warrants inclusion in the lead, then you need to establish that. My point is that there are hundreds of people of similar importance. Take a look at the whole long list of famous-people-from-Peoria. You want to put them all in the lead? And frankly, I'm quite tired, since you have consistently had only one single purpose in editing Wikipedia, and it's not really appropriate. This is not the Komen-Brinker sandbox, and it's not ok for you to edit wikipedia for the one and only purpose of making Komen and Brinker as big as you can. Your judgment is entirely suspect--it simply consists of "hey, Komen or Brinker should be everywhere!" So how about looking for consens from other editors, rather than only two editors whose sole Wikipedia interests have been Komen or Brinker? Tb (talk) 15:47, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think the "Komen for the Cure" cause is well known, but seeing the name "Komen" out of context without the "Cure" connection didn't ring a bell. That's just my subjective opinion, which happens to be fairly Illinois-centric.--Bhuck (talk) 10:45, 20 March 2009 (UTC) I would note that Komen's notability does not seem to have warranted a biography here, but instead just a redirect to the charity. Those wanting to promote Komen would do better to concentrate on the biography first, before trying to get her mentioned in article leads.--Bhuck (talk) 10:48, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Notable People
This list is large. If all these people can be acuratly referenced to Peoria, then this list should be given it's own page as a "list of" page. Dkriegls (talk) 06:44, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Why mention Ray LaHood in the intro, when his position is not that high and the town is relatively important within the state of Illinois? ---华钢琴49 (TALK) 21:36, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Bordering states
Hi, I'm from the other side of the world, and I while reading this article I wanted to read about the state that borders Illinois on the north. If you go to any article of any geographic area, it usually starts with something along the lines of:
- The Republic of Uganda (pronounced /juːˈɡændə/ yoo-GAN-də or /juːˈɡɑːndə/ yoo-GAHN-də) is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania.
So please, add a paragraph about the borders :) 201.252.56.90 (talk) 21:28, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- I see this already for Illinois, though not at the top of the article; it is the first line of Illinois#Geography:
The Northeastern border of Illinois is Lake Michigan. Its eastern border with Indiana is the Wabash River and a north-south line above Post Vincennes, 87° 31′ 30″ west longitude. Its northern border with Wisconsin is fixed at 42° 30' north latitude. Its western border with Missouri and Iowa is the Mississippi River. Its southern border is with Kentucky and runs along the northern shoreline of the Ohio River.[1] Illinois also borders Michigan, but only via a water boundary in Lake Michigan.
- Short answer: Wisconsin is the state on the north border of Illinois (though not the north border of Peoria). --Closeapple (talk) 08:47, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
State Routes: Illinois Route 8
The original author seems to have confused the city of Farmington, Illinois with a street called Farmington Road.
Route 8 runs several miles north of the city of Farmington. See the page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois_Route_8 for correct info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.42.21.84 (talk) 08:22, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
U.S. Route 24
U.S. Route 24, which formerly ran through Peoria, was rerouted in 2012 at the city's request, to decrease truck traffic in the downtown core. It now runs on the East Peoria side of the Illinois River as an additional number on Illinois Routes 116 and 29. It then crosses the river on Interstate 474, and rejoins its previous alignment at Bartonville.204.42.21.159 (talk) 11:04, 8 September 2013 (UTC) 204.42.21.237 (talk) 07:27, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
Zip Codes
I've reverted a lot of edits from 98.227.23.122 (u) (t) because they were factually incorrect. I haven't verified all of the existing zip codes currently in the article though. I would hope that anyone else making changes to the zip code list would verify them and add a reference. Suppafly (talk) 15:59, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
- There are 33 listed on USPS.com I believe that 61601–61607, 61610–61616, 61625, 61629, 61630, 61633–61639, 61641, 61643, 61650–61656 is correct. --Dual Freq (talk) 22:38, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
- Looks like 98.227.23.122 (u) (t) is back to vandalism the zip code section again. Suppafly (talk) 17:19, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
There are new users who have made some good-faith edits since June 27, removing some ZIP Codes that are clearly for places outside the city of Peoria. The USPS divides town names into three categories, which it used to call "preferred", "acceptable", and "unacceptable", if I remember. The ZIP Codes listed as of June 25–26 seem to be anything for which Peoria was "preferred" or "acceptable", including 4 or 5 rather odd choices. It's probably better to search by ZIP Code and review the three categories, which are slightly better hints, but not always. I'm just going to list the ZIP Codes here, with some WP:OR notes, and then maybe we can figure out how to source it:
- 61625: Dunlap; also surrounding unincorporated area. Some parts of the city of Peoria just after annexation are still in 61525; some tend to get reassigned to 61615 after annexation to the city.
- 61601: Peoria: only for the main post office and part of that post office's P.O. Boxes
- 61602: Peoria (downtown) only
- 61603: Peoria (East Bluff) only; also covered the south part of Peoria Heights until the Heights got 61616.
- 61604: Peoria (Center Bluff); also Norwood, West Peoria, 90% of Bellevue, and unincorporated area around them. USPS lists Norwood as unacceptable, but I don't know why: It's an incorporated municipality.
- 61605: Peoria (South Side); also unincorporated area between Peoria and the Peoria International Airport
- 61606: Peoria (West Bluff) only
- 61607: Bartonville; also a small part of Bellevue, a small industrial part of Peoria, and adjacent unincorporated areas. Why the USPS shows Peoria as primary, I don't know; maybe mail delivery comes from the Peoria post office instead of the Bartonville post office; or Peoria International Airport is in 61607 and maybe they don't like to admit they're in Bartonville.
- 61608–61609: never existed
- 61610: Creve Coeur: recent ZIP Code to prevent confusion with East Peoria addresses, as those cities share some of the same street names, and a few of the same streets, and think duplicating address numbers is fun. Nothing in the city of Peoria.
- 61611: East Peoria (most); also Bay View Gardens, Spring Bay, and nearby unincorporated areas. Nothing in the city of Peoria.
- 61612: Peoria: only for P.O. Boxes at North University Street station
- 61613: Peoria (Northwoods Mall) only
- 61614: Peoria (north-central parts) only: large parts used to be unincorporated area, but Peoria has now annexed all of it. Also covered most of Peoria Heights until the Heights got 61616.
- 61615: Peoria (far west and north); also unincorporated area to the west and the northeast
- 61616: Peoria Heights: recent ZIP Code to prevent Peoria Heights from having Peoria's ZIP Code "reputation"; Heights the streets were all renumbered into the Peoria system in the 1980s and no longer conflict with Peoria's city streets. Nothing that slops over into the city of Peoria as far as I can tell.
- 61617–61624: never existed as far as I know
- 61625: Peoria: Bradley University only
- 61626: no longer exists; was probably Peoria: Bergner's downtown only. No downtown store or downtown headquarters since 1980s.
- 61627: no longer exists; maybe an old ZIP Code for Keystone Steel & Wire (see confusion at 61641)
- 61628: no longer exists; can't figure out what it used to be
- 61629: Peoria: Caterpillar Inc. Building AB (world headquarters) only
- 61630: Peoria: Caterpillar Inc. Building LC only. (I think this used to be assigned to the Caterpillar East Peoria plant, though.)
- 61631: no longer exists; was Peoria: Commercial National Bank of Peoria only. Successor is PNC Bank, no special ZIP Code.
- 61632: no longer exists; was Peoria: Foster & Gallagher only. Went bankrupt.
- 61633: Peoria: Great Central Insurance Company only. Now merged with Argonaut; I think they still use this.
- 61634: Peoria: Illinois Mutual Insurance only.
- 61635: East Peoria: Illinois Central College main campus only. Not used by Peoria campus.
- 61636: Peoria: UnityPoint Health Methodist only
- 61637: Peoria: OSF Saint Francis Medical Center only, Peoria
- 61638: Peoria: RLI Corp. only
- 61639: Peoria: Komatsu Mining Systems only
- 61640: no longer exists; might have been Peoria: USDA Northern Lab only
- 61641: Bartonville (but has always claimed to be Peoria): Keystone Steel & Wire only. For reasons I don't know, this has always used the address "7000 South Adams Street, Peoria IL 61641" even though it's pretty obviously in Bartonville, 7000 South Adams Street is obviously Bartonville, and no part of it is inside the city of Peoria. (It used to be in Peoria until the 1910s, but that was long before ZIP Codes.)
- 61642: no longer exists; don't know what it used to be, but may have also been associated with Keystone, or just a typo by Keystone
- 61643: Peoria: Peoria Journal Star only
- 61644–61649: never existed as far as I know
- 61650–61656: Peoria: only for main post office's P.O. Boxes
- 61657–61699: never existed
Summary:
- 61525: some in the city of Peoria, but possibly only until renumbered to 61615
- 61601–61606: substantially the city of Peoria
- 61607: small number of addresses in city of Peoria, but they do exist
- 61612–61615: substantially the city of Peoria
- 61625, 61629–61630, 61633, 61634, 61635–61639, 61643, 61650–61656: city of Peoria
- 61610, 61611, 61616, 61635: not in the city of Peoria
- 61640: not in the city of Peoria, despite "Peoria IL 61640" line on addresses
Is that confusing enough yet? --Closeapple (talk) 20:25, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- Honestly, I don't see the value in listing 20+ zipcodes in an infobox. I looked last month and a number of large cities don't contain that information, ie. Madison, WI and Milwaukee. Indianapolis and St. Louis use a Collapsible list, but I have no idea how they confirmed that those are the correct ranges. FWIW, the last two from today are still fairly obvious socks (at least of each other) and likely of the .122 IP which was vandalizing last month adding duplicate / nonsense ranges and non-existent ones like 61608. In an attempt to resolve this, I added the list of 33 zip codes from this list at USPS.com. --Dual Freq (talk) 20:52, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
www.unitedstateszipcodes.org/zip-code-database/ has a free csv or excel database that can be downloaded and sifted to just primary cities. It lists 29 for Peoria, 61601-61607, 61612-61615, 61625, 61629, 61630, 61633-61639, 61641, 61643, 61650-61656. Those are further broken into 3 types, PO Box, Standard and Unique. only 61602,03,04,05,06,14 and 61615 are "Standard" type with Peoria as primary. Whatever we put in the infobox, wikipedia is the last place I would go for trustworthy zip code information. --Dual Freq (talk) 21:20, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
I went with the following as I apparently add 61635 to the list above by mistake. 61601-61607, 61612-61615, 61625, 61629, 61630, 61633, 61634, 61636-61639, 61641, 61643, 61650-61656 from "29 ZIP Code Results for listing Peoria, IL a "Primary city"". unitedstateszipcodes.org. Retrieved June 29, 2015. I think there are 3 or 4 sockpuppets of IP .122 now, working a couple different articles adding zip codes where there is no need or purpose. 3 alone all have Peoria Zip code in their name. --Dual Freq (talk) 23:43, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Peoria, Illinois
I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Peoria, Illinois's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Concerning John Daker
I have added back John Daker as a notable person. There have been several articles in local newspapers about him. I believe he qualifies as notable. Most of the articles about him are behind newspaper paywalls. Wikitehedia (talk) 04:32, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
- He is not notable, per WP:USCITIES#Notable people. --Magnolia677 (talk) 18:08, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
- I have no horse in this race as I'm not a great judge of notability but is there a specific reason on WP:USCITIES#Notable people that you'd like to cite as to why? Is the OP supposed to guess which one? I'm just trying to get some direction for them.
- As for John Daker, I had never heard of him but not only were there several Peoria Journal Star articles about the guy but several mentions in other newspapers and various forums about the guy. See https://duckduckgo.com/?q=John+Daker+peoria&ia=web I guess his claim to fame was someone making a viral video from his singing. Still, maybe not notable but he does bubble up above the surface of where most people are and maybe we owe the OP a reason? Dbroer (talk) 20:17, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
- The part that says "A fast and easy way to establish this is if they already have an article written about them on Wikipedia, since it would have never been approved, or would have been deleted if they did not meet notability requirements." They can create an article about the person, then add them to the list. --Dual Freq (talk) 22:05, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
- I would also add that I'm not advocating adding every person from Peoria to this the city article list as there are a lot on wikipedia. See List of people from Peoria, Illinois and Category:People from Peoria, Illinois. The line has to be drawn somewhere and it's easiest to remove people without a wikipedia article. --Dual Freq (talk) 22:17, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

- "To be included in a list of notable people, individuals must still meet the notability requirements per WP:PEOPLE. A fast and easy way to establish this is if they already have an article written about them on Wikipedia, since it would have never been approved, or would have been deleted if they did not meet notability requirements. This is not the sole rationale for inclusion, since some people who might meet notability standards may not have an article, but it is a quick reference. If challenged, additions should be removed and discussed on the talk page of the city, until a consensus is reached."

- Do you seriously believe that this person is one of the most notable people from Peoria curated from the List of people from Peoria, Illinois and Category:People from Peoria, Illinois to the point where they need to be listed in the article about Peoria? --Dual Freq (talk) 01:20, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
- To be clear, I don't think he should be included but I thought that the OP deserved a better explanation than an article listing the criteria. They are obviously a new editor (they didn't know how to add their signature for example) and I just thought it would just be a courtesy to take a moment to provide that guidance. I added some additional information for the discussion but no, outside of being better known than most people from Peoria, I don't think he meets the criteria.
