Tobias catches a fish

[edit]

I would like to offer you, my fellow wikipedians, the following mindboggling enigma. There are two versions of the painting Tobias catches a fish. Both are credited to Lastman, but the differences are way to obvious for it to be of one and the same painter. The version in this entry is the late one: from 1625. There is an earlier version, dating from 1613, and that version is much better and more detailed, if I may be so bold to ventilate my personal opinion. I'll insert the old version here, so a discussion can be started on this topic.

Mistake

[edit]

Because Rembrandt never visited Italy, it is likely that he was influenced by Caravaggio (see e.g. chiaroscuro) mainly or significantly via Lastman - it's not true. Rembrandt was influenced by Utrecht Carravagism, there was a strong representation of painters that were emulating Caravaggio: Terbrugghen, Honthorst, Van Baburen and they had great impact on Rembrandt and Vermeer.
