There is here no information on Prof. Overy's early life, and therefore social and (earlier) educational background. It would be nice to know where Prof. O. (of whose works I am an admirer) comes from, in all the senses of the term.Maelli (talk) 11:57, 30 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The photo of Dr. Overy, a longish side view in profile, doesn't show his face at all. Can't something better be found? Sca (talk) 21:42, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen a couple of interviews with Overy in WW II documentaries. His knowledge of the Third Reich seems to be superficial. Hitler planned a war from the day he seized power in Germany. To finance Germany´s economic upswing and the armament programme his Reichsbank chief Hjalmar Schacht created a parallel currency, the Mefo Wechsel which were nothing but debt. Hitler intended to pay back those drafts with spoils of war. In 1938 and 1939 these drafts were due, and the war was started.
When Overy talks about leading Nazis he often mispronounces their names. Kershaw has a good knowledge of German. Overy doesn´t.
Overy seems to me to be rather a journalist than a historian and scholar.
In a film on whether Aushwitz should be bombed as Jewish organisations demanded Overy defended the British position not to. Asked whether the railway lines should have been bombed he replied that they could easily be repaired.
