[edit]This reads like a 5th grader's homework assignment. "Under the watchful eye of manager Joe Torre"? Are you kidding? Also, the adjective "spotty," while acceptable for conversation, is not acceptable for formal writing. I know, I should edit it if I don't like it, but I just prefer to be a critic.
Agreed. "Despite hitting an inside-the-park home run on August 3 and providing not only smooth defense at first base but also key RBIs and a professional air to the Dodgers' clubhouse, by mid-September Ventura was unwittingly caught in a power struggle. Tracy had been feuding with the team's GM, ex-Sox man Dan Evans, for weeks before Evans acquired Ventura — what better way to show displeasure with Evans than to essentially bench his latest find? For 16 straight games, Ventura's contributions were limited to an occasional at-bat or ninth-inning defensive cameo. Once news of the feud leaked out thanks to reporter Bob Nightengale, he was given more playing time, but the damage was done."
Seriously, this was clearly written by some insane Robin Ventura fanboy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Theistheman (talk • contribs) 04:38, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- The phrase "An outstanding performer on both offense and defense,... " starting out the second paragraph in the lede really jumped out at me as fanboy material. Nothing else really struck me at first glance, but it was just a glance. When I have more time I'll be sure to de-fanboy the rest of it. --Muboshgu (talk) 14:39, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- WOW I just read some more and I can't believe how fawning the original author was. I mean, Ventura was good, but not that good. I will rewrite this article. --Muboshgu (talk) 14:43, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
I think that he was only the third major leaguer named "Robin," following Hall-of-Famers Roberts and Yount. Too bad he didn't uphold that tradition.WHPratt (talk) 18:08, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Nolan Ryan beatdown
[edit]As good as he was, and as good a guy, the first thing I'll always remember him for is being put in a headlock and pummeled by Nolan Ryan, a man 20 years older than him. I remember watching it and just falling out. And this comes from a guy who gained a lot of admiration for him for all the reasons mentioned in this excellent bio, and a Dodger fan who always felt good with Robin coming to the plate in clutch situations during that last year. -Wikitoddia 03:06, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- Haha yes, and I'm a Yankee fan who appreciated him both as a Yankee and when he was crosstown in one of the best infields assembled in recent times. I don't know if the beatdown belongs in the lede, but it at least needs its own section. --Muboshgu (talk) 14:40, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
im from fort worth and a huge ranger fan.........nolan ryan and his beatdown are about the only things us fans have, no world series or anything else.......so keep that section for us to have LOL —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.65.208.228 (talk) 13:14, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- No worries fella, the Nolan Ryan beatdown is unquestionably notable. --Muboshgu (talk) 15:51, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Pronunciation of name
[edit]I went ahead and fixed what (to my understanding) was an inaccurate rendering of how the name "Ventura" is pronounced. Whoever provided the original pronunciation guide (1) had the first vowel in the IPA rendering as the reduced vowel ɨ and (2) gave a transcribed pronunciation of "vin-TURR-ə," with a short i as the first vowel. Neither of these seem right to me. There's enough secondary stress on that first syllable (I'd say) that ɨ is too schwa-like and indeterminate to render the vowel correctly. And it's pronounced as a short i only for speakers whose dialect includes a pin-pen merger; for most other speakers that vowel is pronounced (as you'd figure from the spelling) as a short e (IPA ɛ), giving a transcribed pronunciation of "ven-TURR-ə." Speakers with a pin-pen merger will see "ven-TURR-ə" and pronounce it "vin-TURR-ə" anyway. (I'm sure I've oversimplified some issues here, or worse; if you know any better, please set me straight.) Who wrote this tripe? This reads like a 5th grader's homework assignment. "Under the watchful eye of manager Joe Torre"? Give me a break. Note to author: "spotty" is a fine adjective for conversation, but not for formal writing. |
