Thanks for adding things and fitting this into categories, Bogdan. BTW, the Enciclopedical Dictionary (of 1978) says that they were armed with "sâneţe". Do you have any idea what the word means? DEX online says:
SÂNEÁŢĂ, sâneţe, s.f. Puşcă primitivă cu cremene
