Notability
[edit]About the only thing notable about subject is the finalist for the Paris Review thing.
One, that should be cited. Two, there should be more examples of notablity, if possible. Education and locations doesn't really give us much --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 00:35, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Notability problems? Think about how many articles we have on one-season football-palyers from decades ago. A well-published poet oughtta rate...DavidOaks (talk) 22:26, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
This guy had 17 poems in The Paris Review. The only other poet to have published more poems in that magazine is Billy Collins. He had 18 poems in Western Humanities Review and 2 in the The New Republic--in his first collection. The webcat searches indicated over 50 poems in premier magazines, plus short stories and translations and reviews. I really think editors without specialized knowledge in certain fields should refrain from editing pages outside of their areas of expertise. Also I think that Omarcheesboro shouldn't editorialize in his comments: the original article, according to the ISP, was from Colorado, but the poet was living in Europe at the time according to the Rochester Institute of Technology. The Paris Review Prize finalist issue is probably impossible to prove because of the scandal surrounding Zoo Press, Neil Azevedo and The Paris Review and Kenyon Review--but the Independent Publisher book awards finalists are insignificant? You have numerous poets whose sole achievement seem to be a university press award. As I tried to edit this page I referenced other pages of poets and discovered that secondary sources often consisted of contributor's notes and magazine profiles--all of which are written by the poet. University faculty webpages should have at least equal authority since one would assume that the university hiring practices involve a vetting process and access to CVs. But what do I know: I have a library science degree. I think you need to review your policies regarding living poets. We are not talking about American Idol contestants here. ~~FrancophileEsmee —Preceding unsigned comment added by FrancophileEsmee (talk • contribs) 06:27, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- I agree that a well-published poet ought to be notable, but that doesn't mean that the article can simply do without references. Being a finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Award is something, but he didn't win. Bring more sources to the article and this discussion won't be necessary.
