Sources
[edit]There have been a lot of additions to this article recently but very few are sourced. For example, there is now a long list of alumni, but how do we know that these people were alumni? We need references. In some cases, there could be a reference in an article about the person, but few of the alumni listed have articles. In the case of Tony Abbott, there is a sentence there saying he was at St John's and it has a reference at the end of the sentence. That reference confirms much of the sentence but not the St John's bit. Other sections are also missing sources, so I added a tag for the whole article, not just the alumni stuff. --Bduke 02:13, 22 April 2007 (UTC) This article also reads like an article for the college. CHANGE IT
Just passing by
[edit]I started this article a long time ago after staying in the College for a conference and being surprised that there was no article on it. It has come a long way since then. Congratulations to all concerned. Nevertheless, the point I made above five months ago still stands. This article needs many more references. If you were to put it forward for good article status you would be told that pretty firmly. Apart from the lack of references I think it deserves to be a "good article" or even a featured article. --Bduke 23:13, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks Bduke for your comments. I will look at adding references shortly. Its interesting you came to St John's for a conference which made you start the article. Myself and a few others currently live at Johns and yor welcome for a follow up visit anytime! Thanks again. --User:Offshoreholdingco 00:25, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
I just saw this article and was wondering about the notable alumnus 'Justice Jack Geng OAM- Justice of High court of Australia' - unfortunately no such High Court Judge has ever existed. Surely a college like this does not need to list fake alumni. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.139.47.125 (talk) 03:19, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Photos
[edit]It appears that nearly 2 years ago, User:Offshoreholdingco uploaded the following images and placed a few in this article:
None of these are used in the article now, and none of them have any descriptions, nor do their filenames make any sense, so it's a little confusing as to what they are. They could be moved to Commons if we knew what they were. Any help would be appreciated. howcheng {chat} 20:59, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
From my recollection of going to a conference there, I think the 5th one is the chapel. The 3rd and 4th are a view in the opposite direction (roughly) from near the chapel over the College sports grounds with the main part of Sydney Uni in the background. I have doubts about the copyright status of the 2nd one, which is presumably the grant of arms. I do not know about the first one. I would let 2, 3 and 4 go, and move 5 to Commons. I have no view on 1. The photos in the article are better quality than these. All the images in the article need to be renamed, given better descriptions and moved to Commons. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:47, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
The Latin motto
[edit]As someone who has studied Latin, I couldn't help but notice that the translation provided is quite distant from the original text. A better translation would be "In vain without the Lord", since that's the exact meaning of the words. What are everyone else's thoughts on this? (Huey45 (talk) 12:18, 19 March 2010 (UTC))
In the news
[edit]Including a mention of editing this article to remove mention of the recent scandals to do with initiation and consequent changes to governance

Please remove Justice Ian Harrison – current Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, which is under the Law subheading under the Distinguished Alumni heading because he never attended St John's College University of Sydney and no source can verify he did CollegeAlumniEditor (talk) 23:52, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

- Partially done. I have made changes in accordance with most of this request, except that of adding the alumni. I would appreciate some added reference regarding their notability and, especially, relationship to the school, before making those additions. Dhtwiki (talk) 03:32, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
References
Thanks for that Dhtwiki, I went to College with the three distinguished alumni and now work there. I have added references for their notability as well as references to there connection to the College were possible. I have also included their freshman year in brackets next to their names. They all competed for the College in their chosen sports.

Can you please add the paragraph below
The College has had a change in governing legislation in recent years with the “St John’s College Act 2018”[1] replacing the St John’s College Act 1857 on 2 July 2018. Under the new legislation, the College Council will now have 13 members including the Rector, reduced from the original 18 members. [2]
to appear following this paragraph.
Government of the College is vested in the College Council by the 1857 Act of Incorporation The Council consists of the Rector and eighteen Fellows, six of whom must be Catholic clergy. The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, currently the Most Rev. Anthony Fisher, takes the role of Visitor of the College. This is a largely ceremonial role, but he can also be called on to give guidance and resolve internal disputes. Under the direction of the Archbishop as Visitor, the College associates itself with the interests of the Church and its mission, particularly by the fostering of appropriate academic directions in education, charity, social justice, ethics and the environment.[5]
Bdantl (talk) 04:35, 6 May 2020 (UTC)BDantl Bdantl (talk) 04:35, 6 May 2020 (UTC) I have completed some research for sources for the College's Wikipedia page.
Can you please add these sources to the first paragraph under the heading Architects.
[3] is inserted after the word "plans" in the second sentence.
[4] is inserted at the end of the paragraph.
The source code for the entire paragraph is below showing the insertions.
In February 1859, William Wilkinson Wardell, the architect of St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney and St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, was appointed the architect for St John's College. Working from Melbourne, he drew up general plans[5] and sent them to Sydney in May 1859. Wardell originally designed St John's College as a three-story sandstone Gothic Revival building on an H-shaped plan. Because of budget restrictions, with a limit of £30,000, in July and August there was discussion of Wardell's design and of how much of it could be built. In September and October, the general plans were approved by the St John's Council and the university senate.[6]
Can you also please add this source to end of the second paragraph under the heading Architects.
.[7][self-published source?] [8]
The source code for the entire paragraph is below showing the insertion.
From October 1859 to April 1860, relations between Wardell and the council deteriorated for various reasons, resulting in Wardell's resignation in June 1860. With the main building program already in progress, the council retained Wardell's plans and proceeded with the construction under the supervision of Edmund Blacket, another of Australia's best-known colonial architects, who had finished construction of the first stage of St. Paul's College, Sydney, the previous year. When Blacket was appointed to supervise the construction of St John's, several changes were made to Wardell's specifications: Australian hardwood was substituted for pitch pine, bar trusses were used in the chapel, a fountain was dropped from the plans, common rather than fire bricks were used, Portland stone was replaced by Colonel stone, and ornamental pillars were incorporated into the design of the library. Blacket estimated that these and other changes would save £1,689, leaving the amended quote at £35,754 pounds. When the College was finally occupied, the cost of construction for the first stage was £40,000.[7][self-published source?] [9]

- Not done for now: This request is too long; it’s difficult to discern what you want changed and where you want it changed. Additionally, although you have listed sources, some are improperly cited (see the errors on your references), and it’s unclear where each piece of information is coming from. This could be a good contribution - just condense and clarify it a bit, then reopen the request. — Tartan357 (Talk) 06:16, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Add Matthew John Hindson AM to the list of Order of Australia honour recipients and link to his existing Wikipedia page. Note the AM is 2006, for "service to the arts as a leading Australian composer and teacher of music, and through the wide promotion of musical works to new audiences."
And also create an Arts category and list Matthew Hindson AM as acclaimed composer, artistic director and Head of Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. 124.171.152.187 (talk) 23:52, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
