A record?

[edit]

The 51-rep bench press isn't even verified in the second reference by the NFL, why is the first reference to it being cited? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.161.69.28 (talk) 04:53, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CBS Sports reports that the 49 reps "broke a record of 45 that was last achieved by Arkansas guard Mitch Pietrus in 2010."[1] That is at odds w/what the article now says. The Chicago Tribune, ESPN, TSN, USA Today, the Houston Chronicle, Boston Globe, and The Chicago Sun-Times concur that it was a record.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Time to give the man his due.--Epeefleche (talk) 01:10, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The NFL never kept an official record book on either combine workout. That explains the confusion on who ran the fastest ever 40-yd dash. Anyway, Justin Ernest recorded 51 reps in 1999, that is a fact. Therefore calling Paea's 49 "the record" like you suggest is factually wrong, regardless of the poor research some in the media conduct. It would be correct to write that "Paea had the most reps since 2000", just like 40-yard dash only lists players after 1999. But describing it as "all-time record" is wrong. --bender235 (talk) 10:46, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
