In a recent online chat, Susannah insisted that this song is NOT about her. Jerome Benton was dealing with a bad breakup at the time, and Prince wrote the lyrics about that situation. Prince was apparently considering asking Jerome to sing it for the album (The Family) but reconsidered given Benton's limited vocal ability.
Prince wrote many songs about Susannah ('The Beautiful Ones' being the first and probably most well-known). However, at least according to Susannah herself, 'Nothing Compares' is not one of them.
