[edit]

The anglicised form Calcutta was the official name until 2001, when it was changed to Kolkata in order to match Bengali pronunciation.Easwaran, Kenny. "The politics of name changes in India". I have not looked for previous discussions/consensus on if if we should use the name Calcutta or Kolkata when reporting on events that occurred before 2001. These include her birth, and when she fled the Taliban in 1995. --Marc Kupper|talk 22:20, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

I doubt if there is any consensus. Usually what is done for recent historical (but prior to name change) events is to use Kolkata and then, within parenthesis, then known as Calcutta. So, Banerjee was born in Kolkata (then known as Calcutta) would be fine. In any case, not a huge matter, IMO.--Dwaipayan (talk) 22:29, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"...born in Kolkata (then known as Calcutta)" sounds good and allows for using Kolkata when referring to 1995. I found MOS:PN#Place names which indicates we'd use the name existing at the time but I like "(then known as Calcutta)" better as we can then refer to Kolkata in the remainder of the article. I ended up doing "(then known as Calcutta)" only in the infobox. The wording of the lead was cleaner with just "Kolkata". --Marc Kupper|talk 22:44, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think you handled it well. --(AfadsBad (talk) 23:08, 5 September 2013 (UTC))[reply]

In the same way, Sushmita Banerjee should be changed to Sayeda Kamala. In case you want to use her previous name you should use it in this way Sayeda Kamala (then known as Calcutta). I have 179 reliable sources which cite that she had changed her name long back. Hence it would be unethical, immoral and illogical to use her old name to address her. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saumya.purkayastha (talkcontribs) 13:06, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sushmita Banerjee or Sayeda Kamala

[edit]

In the same way, Sushmita Banerjee should be changed to Sayeda Kamala. In case you want to use her previous name you should use it in this way Sayeda Kamala (then known as Calcutta). I have 179 reliable sources which cite that she had changed her name long back. Hence it would be unethical, immoral and illogical to use her old name to address her.

I will not allow something completely defamatory, illegal, immoral and unethical to happen in Wikipedia by any rogue user. There is no person called Sushmita Banerjee. She had changed her name a long back. If you do not accept to the fact that she changed her name due to communal or other reasons, it is indeed shameful. Below are the authentic sources which prove the same. There is NO EXISTING SOURCE which disputes the fact that she had changed her name to Sayeda Kamala. Hence any other edit to this will be termed as illogical, unethical and immoral with reasons with vested interests. http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/south-asia/taliban-deny-hand-in-indian-authors-killing/article5100596.ece http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/504240/20130906/sushmita-banerjee-shot-dead-taliban-afghanistan-militants.htm http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=187400 http://www.deccanherald.com/content/355663/bring-body-back-pleads-slain.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saumya.purkayastha (talkcontribs) 13:08, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Saumya.purkayastha, for your contributions. I have reverted most of them. Please note that we use the name Sushmita Banerjee (where appropriate) for several very good reasons; it is used in reliable sources (including all those that you have supplied) and it is the name under which she became famous (she used it even after taking her new name, most notably as author). Wikipedia is not a lot of things; please check that page and how to achieve consensus. In particular, to achieve the change you desire, you should first ensure that other editors are happy with it,and that it is supported by reliable sources..
