- Support - seems a fairly textbook case of one clear primary topic. Knepflerle (talk) 15:05, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Support - Original, largest, and best known town with this name. Also the hometown of the author Thomas Paine. 71.106.183.124 (talk) 20:51, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- Support probably the best alternative as the largest settlement NSH001 (talk) 21:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Any additional comments:
- Note if this move goes ahead, the dab page currently at Thetford will need to be moved to Thetford (disambiguation) NSH001 (talk) 21:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- Almost everything that links to Thetford actually refers to the Norfolk town, so if this move goes ahead, there will be a lot less work disambiguating all the links. NSH001 (talk) 21:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Demography
[edit]The current articles states "Around 6,000 people in the area have Portuguese as a mother tongue." which is presented as fact. The reference is a personal website which states "By 2004, the media was suggesting that there may be as many as 6,000 Portuguese-speakers in the Thetford area".
This really isn't solid evidence to support the current statement [1. It's only a media suggestion, 2. being a Portuguese speaker is not the same as having it a a mother tongue, 3. it also says the "Thetford area" which by definition is not just Thetford - can anyone provide alternative evidence or figures? If not, we need to reword this. Andrewself (talk) 14:49, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
STORM CONCERT Annual, really? I remember only about three in the past TEN years! And what about the tunnels north of the river Thet? Where? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sickymicky (talk • contribs) 16:52, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Why twin Thetford with Les Ulis ?
[edit]Oh my, who in the world chose to twin sweet Thetford with Les Ulis in France ? Not that I dislike Les Ulis, but I always thought twin towns were made to be similar, in size of course, but also in "spirit"... And maybe it's just an prejudice I got from reading this page - for I know nothing of Thetford - but its seems a nice little town, with some historical background and what appears like a nice countryside setting. Whereas Les Ulis are a rather rough town in the suburbs of Paris, classified as "sensitive" - that is, due to riots, and degradation of the living conditions for the people there, the state is supposedly concentrating on solving problems there. But the town was built from scratch in the seventies to home factory workers in horrible, hastily built blocks of flats and towers (yet it has raised several among the best French sportsmen). So, far from trying to diminish a town that suffers from the context in which it was created and battles with the handicaps it had from the beginning to try and emerge from the trap of being a poor suburb, I just wonder why people chose to twin those towns which seem to have not much in common ??? Thankx ! RiverGirl (talk) 20:12, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Thomas Paine
[edit]Does anyone agree with me that Thomas Paine is of such global significance that mention of Thetford being his birth place should be mentioned in the first paragraph. Does anyone object to me doing this? User:ruskin —Preceding undated comment added 18:19, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- Fully agree that it should be in the lead - which is too short in any case. - Arjayay (talk) 19:22, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Walking and cycling
[edit]Despite being surrounded by forest and countryside, there are only two walking routes and one cycling route into the countryside. The only walking routes are the footpath along the north bank of the Little Ouse under the A11 river bridge, and paths off the south side of Elm Road (near the industrial estate). The only cycling route is along Kilverstone Road, near Tescos. Otherwise you have to travel along main roads, and the A11 by-pass is so continuously and non-stop busy with heavy lorry traffic that it is frightening to cross and I would never do it again. There is also access to Barnhamcross Common and area, but that does not safely connect with the countryside. 92.24.191.105 (talk) 10:15, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- What is your point? This is about the Thetford article and how to improve it, not a social chat site. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 10:27, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- Walking and cycling in or around Thetford is part of the attributes of the town, like other sports facilities, and it should be mentioned particularly as the town is in a forest and country area. I am hoping that others can also contribute to a walking and Cycling section - they may have more detailed knowledge than me. The Little Ouse Way / St Edmund Way serves Thetford, for example. If you never walk or cycle then you may not see the point. I never play rugby, but I do not object to mention of the Thetford Rugby Club. Other articles mention cycling, for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwich#Cycling 92.24.191.105 (talk) 10:38, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- I suggest you have a go at adding something yourself to the main article. You have to start somewhere. There are lots of helpful pages you can use, as in the list I will send to you. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 10:48, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Proper pronunciation of the name should be shown as part of the introduction.
[edit]I believe it is usually pronounced as Tetford not Thetford. Kentishmaid (talk) 13:52, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry Kentishmaid that is not true - Arjayay (talk) 16:27, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
