Editnotice[edit]

Bit strident, that notice - it nearly discouraged me from making an incremental improvement edit. Tone it down a bit? - TB (talk) 18:25, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

If the edit you were planning didn't involve adding information about stuff that didn't actually happen in Valdez and is merely a footnote in some fictional universe, then you missed the point and are replying to the presentation of the notice and not its actual content. If you were planning on adding such material, then it worked as intended. Which was it? Beeblebrox (talk) 18:41, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Setting aside the fact that I have not stopped beating my wife, you're right in your assessment - if it was unclear, let me restate; I find the presentation of the notice somewhat too aggressive and rather too unfriendly. I appreciate that reverting well-meaning but inappropriate edits is thankless, but biting the newcomers is not good either. Tell you what, I'll add Valdez, Alaska to my watchlist and assist in the former task if you'll at least consider using a normal-sized and coloured text for the editpage notice. - TB (talk) 19:51, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
The edit notice was deliberately made to be very eye-catching and difficult to ignore as this problem has been going on for several years. The problem with more "toned down" notices is that they are often ignored by the very type of users who add the material the notice is intended to prevent. Despite all that, I have toned it down a little bit. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:18, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Looks far friendlier, ta - much appreciated. I quite agree that there's nothing as willfully blind as an excited young fan wishing to express his or her love for their subject. A mallet would be more useful than an edit notice in many cases. Alas, that too is frowned upon ;) - TB (talk) 06:34, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Archive Photo[edit]

Valdez in 1910.

The caption and attributions for this historic photo are not entirely correct. The photo is one of a large collection taken by Phinney S. Hunt (1866-1917)[1] in and around Valdez in the early 1900s. Much of his collection was later donated to and is now curated by the Alaska Library Special Collections[2], including this wonderful photo[3]. PS Hunt was the John Muir of early Valdez.

The caption reads "Valdez in 1910." However the archive collection lists the date of the photo as June 26, 1905[4]. Given that Hunt documented his work meticulously with ID numbers, date, caption, and often additional notes, I think it is best to go with his date of 1905.

The attribution in the photo's Wiki media file gives the impression that the photo is "by Ella Higginson", in fact the download attribution reads "Valdez 1910 by Ella Higginson - Higginson, Ella (1910) Alaska, The Great Country, New York City: The MacMillan Company, pp. p. 148. Licensed under Public Domain via Commons"... I can understand the need to also cite the source of the license to use this photo, however I believe that the contribution made by this visionary photographer to the historic legacy of Valdez should be properly acknowledged and credited with his photo.
