Possible areas for improvement[edit]

"in 1929 after completing his seventh grade of school" While I can do the math and work out that he left school at 14, any chance of 'in 1929, aged 14, after completing his seventh grade of school'? Or even 'in 1929, aged 14'? so that non-Americans have some idea of what this means?
"on 10 July he was shot down over Korostyshev. Forced to bail out in parachutes, they eventually made it back to friendly territory". "he ... they"? Maybe 'on 10 July his plane was shot down over Korostyshev. Forced to bail out in parachutes, he and his crew/navigator [if the plane only had two crew members] eventually made it back to friendly territory'?
"While flying mostly on the American-made A-20B" Does one fly "on", rather than 'in'?
Do we know why "he was demoted from lieutenant colonel to major"?
