The result of the move request was: 'not moved (non-admin closure). No prejudice against either a discussion now about turning Whai into a disambiguation page, or reassessing the primary topic claims of this article in several months once the new name has become more entrenched. Whai (basketball) → Whai – Whai is currently a redirect page to String figure, possibly based on WP:RFFL. I believe based on WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, Whai should usurp this page as "Whai" is now the name of a New Zealand NBL team. DaHuzyBru (talk) 00:30, 21 October 2023 (UTC)— Relisting. - Oppose. Both are Maori terms, one meaning "stingray" and the other meaning "string game" (see [1]), but there are plenty of Ghits in English for people using the term to mean "Maori string game", whereas the basketball team has only just been established and has never played a game. I suggest creating a disambiguation page at the base title if necessary. Dekimasuよ! 02:31, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose as above. Yes, a dab page. In ictu oculi (talk) 12:13, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- Weak oppose the rename was very recent and the generic meaning may well have more long-term significance. Perhaps a DAB would be better. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:43, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- Comment There is no mention of "whai" at the current redirect target, String figure. "Whai" didnt get any traffic until the basketball team changed its name recently.[2]. Incidentally, there is also a radio station WHAI.—Bagumba (talk) 22:22, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- Support:
- There is only one article called "Whai", so no disambiguator is needed.
- Some editors want to disambiguate it from String figure, for which "whai" is a non-English term. But that article contains neither the word "whai" nor any mention of Māori string games. There is no need to direct readers there. Once readers looking for whai arrive at the article, they are provided with no clue as to why they are there.
- Currently, the basketball article is not just the primary topic, but the sole topic. If information about whai gets added to String figure, then we can consider whether one article or the other is the primary topic, and whether a hatnote would do. For now, we are not disambiguating terms used in the outside world; we disambiguate terms as they are used in the English WP. Nurg (talk) 04:22, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose there are plenty of uses of "Whai", and WP:RECENTISM for the basketball team. Instead create a disambiguation page at tbe base name, for the game, the team, Whai Ngata, WHAI (AM and FM), WHAI-TV now located at WZME -- 65.92.247.90 (talk) 22:07, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
