Dear Sir, I studied Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia a little and now I understand what you meant with "references". For me it means: literature/sources. I will use it this way. I will study the references for Major Mounsey and act as I have to do. Kind regards, Lex Ritman192.87.123.16 (talk) 09:19, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Lex Ritman, I have been writing a book on Orkney and have become fascinated by the figure of William Mounsey. I wonder if you have been able to to continue with your researches. I wonder what evidence there is for Mounsey having been a spy in Persia. Also what is your opinion on the inscription carved in the Dwarfie Stone? One hears it refers to the Highland midges, but I find this hard to accept. I had the notion this might be a quotation from a Persian poem, but have been advised it is missing a syllable which is essential to the writing of classical Persian verse. Maybe, though, this was Mounsey's mistake. Also what is the book you wrote on Mounsey? Would it be possible to see a pdf of it?
Please write to me at mariuskoc@pancogito.plus.com with kind regards, Marius Kociejowski London UK Mariuskoc (talk) 12:38, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Sir, I added: references and bibliography; Lex Ritman192.87.123.16 (talk) 11:00, 26 April 2010 (UTC

Dear Sir, I added more information. Lex Ritman192.87.123.16 (talk) 13:11, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Sir, I added more information. I am no expert with wikipedia, etc. So be so kind to help me. It concerns: footnotes-citations. I hope you will do the technical side. My information about this: see: article and see: references. Quote: The regiment embarked...Hodgson: source: The King's Own. Quote: Mounsey was commissioned...14 April 1837: source: Hart's Annual Army List. Quote: After his retirement...backwards in Latin: source: Prehistoric Orkney. Quote: In 1850 he traced...Armathwaite. Source: Walking in Eden. Quote: He was very interested in a maze...Celtic people: source: A short history of Rockcliffe, Cumberland. This all I can find. Lex Ritman, author of the article: Major William Mounsey.192.87.123.17 (talk) 14:53, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In a way, not much point adding and improving this on the talk page - I would recommend you have a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources and reference the William H. Mounsey, that's the best place for citing your sources. I know it's a bit of a pain to get used to references inline but you avoid a lot of discussion by doing so and show to readers that it has a background in reliable sources. In all, it'll make a better article. Akerbeltz (talk) 14:59, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. The basic idea is that each paragraph, or where necessary sentence should be provided with an in-line citation. I will see if I can find anything I can add in this style. Ben MacDui 16:54, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I added an example - it is not a very good reference but you can hopefully see the general idea. One issue that the "References" and "Bibliography" sections seem to include main works. Ideally there wold be one for "References" listing the main publications and another for "Notes" which show the pages number from those references and any web links. Ben MacDui 17:07, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For other examples look at any Good Article e.g. Barra Head. Ben MacDui 17:10, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I will look at it after some time. Away again for a long time.192.87.123.13 (talk) 12:34, 28 May 2010 (UTC)Lex Ritman[reply]

Before leaving I can still do something. I will contact you soon on this page. Thank you for your corrections. Lex Ritman192.87.123.13 (talk) 09:50, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but you wrote that it was a not to good reference for this article. I printed the example and hope to do more. Before I quit a can make a list of my references, without doing it myself, because I still have difficulties with "how to do it". I hope that you will be so kind to do it. After my return I will ask my daughter if she can help me, when you don't want to do it. Of course it is only a request. Lex Ritman192.87.123.13 (talk) 11:37, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I will start making a list of references at home. You will be informed later. Thank you. Apologies again for removing your link. Lex Ritman192.87.123.13 (talk) 11:53, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem - I may have misled you - the reference is not ideal - better to have a peer-reviewed academic work or book by an author with credentials - but a newspaper is certainly acceptable. Ben MacDui 12:02, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
References are not complex in principle, it is just a question of getting the hang of it. Suppose the sentence "Circa 1850 he became an amateur archaeologist, living in Carlisle with his sisters Margaret, Mary and Ann." was sourced from page 25 of William Mounsey and the "Jew" stone (Charlie Emett; 1990). You would add something like: <ref>Emett (1990) page 25</ref>. (Note that if you look at this line in "edit mode" it has extra "nowiki" tages, which prevent it just showing up as "[1]", which is how it should look in the article. You don't use the nowiki tags for the reference itself! Ben MacDui 12:10, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I cannot add number of the pages, because studying Major Mounsey in Scotland there was no need for me to do so. Later on I thougt of Wikipedia. Now I am in Holland. I know exactly what book I used for the text. Lex Ritman192.87.123.13 (talk) 13:01, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your simple explanation (the last one) was very clear. At last I saw the light (I hope). I truly hope that you will accept this stub-article as it is now. I cannot add more concerning references, etc. With many thanks. You don't have to start a new section every time you respond ;) I've tidied some of them up a bit to make them easier to re-use as well. The one thing that bothers me is the one that says "Hissem-Mounsey Family" - that's not a ref. What do you mean with that? Akerbeltz (talk) 16:13, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is Castletown House (where he was in 1871 Census) and Rockcliffe Hall (his address at death in 1877) the same? I suspect so but does anyone know? Nedrutland (talk) 08:39, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
