Request Edit May 2021

[edit]

I’d like to request an independent editor review the proposed updates to this article found below. I believe the proposals would substantially improve this article about XO, one of the largest private aviation firms in the United States. I work for XO, so cannot edit this directly under the conflict of interest rules. I am contacting you here as instructed on Wikipedia’s Contact Us page. I have tried my best to abide by all Wikipedia policies, such as reliable sourcing and neutral point of view.

1. In the lead, first sentence please remove: XOJET is an American on-demand private jet charter company based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a 24/7 operations center at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and sales offices located in New York City, New York, Newport, California, and Palm Beach, Florida.

ADD the following as the first sentence of the article:

XO, formerly XOJET, [1] is an on demand private jet company[2][3] based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[4]

Explanation: Adding reliable secondary sourcing; more accurately explaining what the company does and where it does it.

Relevant text behind paywall in article for the first citation: https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/news/2020/01/27/bay-area-private-jetcompany-takes-headquarters-to.html

XOJet Aviation is a Bay Area success story whose next chapter will be written in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the private-aviation company is moving its headquarters.
The company was founded in Brisbane in 2006. It also has an operations center near Sacramento.
XOJet was purchased by Dubai-based Vista Global in 2018. Last April, Vista Global announced plans to buy Fort Lauderdale-based JetSmarter. In June, Vista created the XO brand, combining XOJet’s operational expertise with JetSmarter’s technology.

2. In the lead, second sentence/second paragraph, please remove: XOJET offers private jet customers access via on-demand ad-hoc charter or membership programs, as well as a fixed-price membership program that is an alternative to jet card and fractional ownership, in the same market as competitors NetJets and Flexjet[citation needed].

REPLACE it with the following new second sentence/second paragraph:

XO offers clients private charters and the ability to purchase individual seats on shared flights,[5] as well as a fixed-price membership program that are alternatives to jet cards and fractional ownership of aircraft.[6][7], in the same market as competitors NetJets and Flexjet.[8]

Explanation: Sentence is almost the same wording but adds reliable secondary sourcing; slight change in wording to more accurately explaining what the company does.

3. In the lead, third sentence/ third paragraph, please remove: XOJET is the only business aviation company to rank first or second in all of the ARG/US Platinum safety rating categories.[9][10]

REPLACE it with the following new third sentence/third paragraph:

XO is one of the largest private aviation firms in the United States.[11]

Explanation: Removing promotional sounding language. Adding more neutral information about relative size of the firm, with a reliable source.

4. In the “History” section, please remove the first sentence: XOJET was founded in 2006 as a private jet charter company with customers purchasing a set number of flight hours to use per year similar to Fractional ownership.

REPLACE IT WITH the following:

XOJET was founded in 2006[12] by Paul Touw[13] as a private jet charter company with customers purchasing a set number of flight hours to use per year, similar to fractional ownership.[14]

Explanation: Adding name of founder of company, adding reliable secondary sources. Otherwise largely the same.

5. In the “History” section, please add the following sentence as the new second paragraph: TPG Capital acquired XOJet in 2009.[15]

Explanation: Adds sourced information about ownership and ownership changes.

6. In the “History” section, please remove the current second sentence in the first paragraph:

From 2009 the company started to operate fixed-price one-way charters between major cities in the United States, at first between the east and west coasts but later extended to other cities.[16]

REPLACE it with the following new third paragraph:

By 2013, XOJET was flying fixed-price charter jets between 22,000 U.S. city connections.[17]

Explanation: Removing sentence with dead link; adding reliable source with new and more specific information.

7. In the “History” section, second paragraph (first and second lines), and third paragraph (first and second lines), please remove the following:

As of June 2017, it was planning to open an additional sales office in Palm Beach, Florida and introduce new and updated Preferred and Elite Programs that will continue the company's focus on increasing the brokerage part of its business. It currently has approximately 1,200 customers in its two programs. In July 2017, XOJET launched Select Access, a new $50,000 level. It also added Light and Mid-Size type jets to its Elite Access program and instituted membership and monthly fees. In August 2017, XOJET said it had opened an office in Palm Beach to expand its brokerage business.

Explanation: Removes future looking language WP: Crystal Ball and WP: Promo

8. In the “History” section, please insert the following as the new fourth paragraph:

In August of 2017, XOJET had more than 7,000 clients worldwide.[18]

Explanation: Adding contextualizing information about company size, removed “current” language to reflect specific time period; adding reliable secondary sourcing.

Relevant text behind paywall: https://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/news/2017/08/09/private-jet-charter-company-opens-office-at-palm.html

San Francisco-based XOJET, which serves over 7,000 clients worldwide and has completed over 200,000 flights over the past decade, said that Palm Beach is the company’s most visited airport in Florida.

Partly done: Hi. I've gone ahead and performed some of the requests, save the following: 1) request 3 is promotional, and so both paragraphs (existing and suggested) were deemed inappropriate (I deleted the existing one); 2) paragraph as requested in item 6 does not exist, and in any case the desired content is promotional and relies on a press release. Point 7 paragraph does not exist either. Thank you. PK650 (talk) 01:21, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PK650: Thank you for your help and review. Do you mind taking a second look at two of the requests? Also, it looks like someone added a promotional sentence and I’d suggest deleting it. It’s in the History section, last sentence: “ XOJet was founded created an alternative to fractional jet ownership while still offering flexibility and personalized service.[19]
  • Re: Request 6, I took a very careful look and it is not based on a press release or press release rewrite, as you had thought. The source is Business Jet Traveler [1], an independent editorial publication. I looked it up and the publication has an extensive policy on ethical journalistic practices and has won many editorial awards. [2] It has an editorial staff and this particular article is bylined to the editor. It is written in a journalistic style very different from a press release.
Also, you noted that the statement that I asked to be replaced does not exist - this is probably because the Request Edit has been in the queue since May and others have edited the article in the intervening months. So, I propose the new language I proposed be replaced still be placed in the “History” section as the new third paragraph:
“By 2013, XOJET was flying fixed-price charter jets between 22,000 U.S. city connections.”

The number of city connections is an airline is an encyclopedic fact because it indicates the very significant size of the private airline at a point in history - it seems like a very objective way to indicate size/scope of the company.
  • Re: Request 3, I think the statement that “XOJet is one of the largest aviation companies in the United States.” is an objective fact that I believe is verifiable, and encyclopedic: there are hundreds of small aviation companies and most readers won’t be able to tell the difference from XO without the proposed context. The statement is sourced to a large, high-quality editorial publication: Business Insider says in a story: “XO, one of the largest private aviation firms in the country...” Yes, the fact itself is perhaps a net positive for the company (although some people prefer smaller private airlines), but the main point is that it’s objective and encyclopedic.
Thank you for your consideration. HC090384 (talk) 12:22, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: I removed the promotional sentence in the history section. As for the 2 other requests, the source used for Request 6 describes the company in an entirely promotional tone, while Request 3 has not been modified to address the previous reviewer's concerns. As a result, they are both denied. Quetstar (talk) 23:46, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @HC090384: Hi. I just noticed Quetstar intervened above. I concur the number of connections might be notable, but in this case I must insist the source does not appear reliable in the sense that the article in question reads like an advertorial, and closely parrots what the company states. This should override any editorial considerations you have touched upon. As for "XOJet is one of the largest aviation companies in the United States", this is more ambiguous, given no specific metric is alluded to, and therefore it only serves the purpose of promoting the subject in this case. We can discuss semantics further if any doubts remain, or if the topic comes up again in a future request. PK650 (talk) 04:20, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merge in the other direction

[edit]

The AfD merge close (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/XO (aviation company)) gives a direction to the merge, but the discussion didn't include any clear views about the direction. I suggest merging to the current name (rather than to the former name), as that is unlikely to be startling to readers and will provide a better long-term location for readers. Klbrain (talk) 10:34, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The company is now XO Global LLC (see [3]), so this article need to rename. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 01:04, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
