Carl Thompson (died 2015)[edit]

  • ... that Carl Thompson, Britain's heaviest man, gained 30 stone (190 kg; 420 lb) over the last three years of his life?
  • Reviewed: Omar Allhiboy
  • Comment: Some may be concerned with putting a hook about a recently deceased man. However, it is sourced that Thompson wanted the public to be aware of the lifestyle which killed him, as a way to deter others from following it.

Created by The Almightey Drill (talk). Self-nominated at 01:50, 23 June 2015 (UTC).

Actually, that itself sounds like it would be a better hook. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 22:07, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

  • ALT1: ... that Carl Thompson used his notoriety as Britain's heaviest man to warn others not to overeat?
  • There are all sorts of problems with this nomination. Firstly, the article is too short at 1,425 characters. Secondly, the title is supposed to show unambiguously what the article is about and "(died 2015)" is too vague; consider "Carl Thompson (heavy person)". I prefer ALT0 for no reason other than I weigh 30 stone myself. Very definitely new enough when nominated, and QPQ taken in good faith (though a link would be appreciated). Please expand the article.--Launchballer 11:39, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
No the title is not to "unambiguously [say] what the article is about". The title is intended to differentiate it from other similar articles. If all the other Carl Thompsons were born in the 17th century then "died 2015" is fine. If all the rest are heavy people then we may need to say "British". Currently it looks quite odd and OTT. • The article title has changed (although I think the new title is a bit dubious) so this needs updating or changing of the hook.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 18:08, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
I take Victuallers' point, and the length of the article is now above 1,500 characters.
ALT2: ... that Carl Thompson, Britain's heaviest man, gained 30 stone (190 kg; 420 lb) over the last three years of his life?--Launchballer 18:57, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
  • I have updated template and ALT2 formatting per DYK rules; strongly suggest that 30 stone be also expressed in kilos and pounds so people around the world understand just how much weight this is. (Otherwise, the hook is of limited interest.) BlueMoonset (talk) 22:44, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
I know for a fact that 30 stone is 420 pounds or 190.9 kilograms. Is there a template that could be used to display this information?--Launchballer 14:38, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
  • Launchballer, I've added the "convert" template to the hooks, which does just that. I think it's best not to use decimal precision in the conversion, since it probably wasn't actually 30 stone exactly, but if you disagree you can modify the output accordingly. (You can also substitute the template to get the actual text (or just enter the resulting text yourself without the template). Incidentally, now that the original hook's article wikilink has been modified, it and ALT2 are identical. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:17, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Disgusted by the fact that the template rounds down so close to 191, but we are good to go with ALT0.--Launchballer 15:07, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
On Thursday at 9pm there is a program about him on Channel 5 called "65 Stone and Trapped In My House" - if anyone wants to watch and expand the article, they are welcome.--Launchballer 19:07, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
