Virginia Overton

[edit]

Created by ThatMontrealIP (talk). Nominated by HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) at 01:07, 11 April 2019 (UTC).

Interesting art, on good sources, no copyvio obvious. - Can we have some hint at the kind of art of art in the hook please. Kust "first woman" at a not-too-well-known location wouldn't make me want to know more, could be little pitures, no? In the article, two sentences in a row hace "although", just a suggestion. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:18, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Thank you for beginning this review. Please tell me if this Alt is too wordy HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 23:08, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
ALT1: that Virginia Overton's sculpture series Built was the first solo exhibit by a female artist to be displayed at Socrates Sculpture Park?
Much better, we now know "sculpture", and a name like Built (italics for artworks) suggests constructions. So, I approve that, but think we could get better building a hook from a header such as "Virginia Overton’s site-specific work at Socrates Sculpture Park rethinks raw construction materials", which are steel and wood, and all of this sheds more light on her than the specific name of a park, which could be piped to "a Queens park". We can drop "to be displayed" (adds nothing), and - if you ask me - we can also drop "first woman" (a very common feature of DYK hooks, like recently "Father of Hockey"). Perhaps add a year? "First woman there" in 2018 say almost more about the park than about her, and nothing too good ;) - I'd like to know what Yoninah and Narutolovehinata5 think. Happy birthday, Mr. Lange. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:47, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
  • Came here after being pinged by Gerda. Honestly, I have to agree with her sentiment that the hook isn't spectacular, as the location mentioned isn't well-known. I have two possible suggestions here that might resolve this: one could be to mention that the park is in Queens (which would likely raise interest since New York is pretty famous), the other could be an alternate hook about her work being used as prizes by the Tribeca Film Festival. You could even expand the current hook and maybe include the information about the sculptures' themes and materials? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 10:54, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
  • I also think the hooks are rather bland. Gerda's suggestion is great! Yoninah (talk) 14:36, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
ALT2: ...that Virginia Overton's sculpture series Built was the first solo exhibit by a female artist to be displayed at a Queens park?
  • My only issue with this is that it implies at any Queens park.
ALT3: ...that in 2018, Virginia Overton's sculpture series Built was the first solo exhibit by a female artist to be displayed at a Queens park?
ALT4: ...that Virginia Overton's sculpture series Built uses construction material to "explore issues of labor, economic, and the land of contemporary society"?
ALT5: ...that in 2016, an original work by artist Virginia Overton was used as a prize at the Tribeca Film Festival?
Thank you for all comments and suggestions, and let's brainstorm. I'm nor friend of piping the park, because readers might think of a Queen's (like King's) park, - I don't think that Queens is THAT well known. I think "land of contemporary society" is purple language even as a quote, but like the direction, - how about "rethink" and mention "steel and wood". ALT5: not bad but could be without redundant "original". Off for rehearsal, keep thinking ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:32, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for those additional comments. I will wait and see what the others think but would replacing it with New York be more helpful? I have tweaked ALT4 below, I agree with you about the quote. I personally find ALT2, 3, and 5 most interesting to a broad audience. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 17:44, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
ALT4a: ... that Virginia Overton's sculpture series Built uses materials such as steel and wood to explore issues of labor, economics, and rethink contemporary society?
Thank you, and I like aspects, but - as said above - the lenghty quote not so much. I think we might the park which has a good name, and includes "Sculpture", and might add "New York waterfront" site for more interest, but that article should be better, no bare urls, and please mention this exhibition ;) - "rethinks raw building materials" would be short enough a quote, I think. I also like "site-specific". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:59, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
I personally like ALT5 and ALT4a; I will leave the rest of the review to Gerda here. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 21:39, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: I agree the parks articles could use some work. I have already added Overton to the article [1]. Please tell me what you thin about these alts. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 22:38, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
ALT4b: ...that Virginia Overton's site-specific sculpture series Built rethinks raw building materials with the use of steel and wood?
ALT3a: ...that in 2018, Virginia Overton's site-specific sculpture series Built was the first solo exhibit by a female artist to be displayed at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York?
Thank you for the ALTs and your patience! I'd reword them slightly:
ALT4c: ...that Virginia Overton's site-specific sculpture series Built "rethinks raw building materials" such as and wood?
ALT3b: ...that in 2018, Virginia Overton's site-specific series Built was the first solo exhibit by a female artist at the Socrates Sculpture Park in New York?
approving 5 for the choice of the prep builder, - the Tribeca Festival (ALT5) is not out, but ALT3b is my favourite. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:54, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
