Marina Militare shoud be renamed in Italian Navy[edit]

As seen in other Country data in English language (Spanish Navy, French Navy, German Navy...), the link alias-naval = "Marina Militare" (the original Italian name) shoud become "Italian Navy" (the English name). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Techman84 (talkcontribs) 17:11, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please add/change the following lines to:

| flag alias-coast guard = Naval ensign of Italy.svg
| link alias-naval = {{#switch:{{{variant|}}}|coast guard=Italian Coast Guard|''Marina Militare''}}

These changes will add the option to display the ensign and name of the Italian Coast Guard (which is actually in Wikipedia as Corps of the Port Captaincies – Coast Guard, but Italian Coast Guard is shorter). Listing the Italian Navy as Marina Militare should display the name in italics since the language is Italian, not English. Derekbridges (talk) 20:28, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if that would work as intended. I've created a sandbox with the suggested code, so we can test it beforehand. SiBr4 (talk) 20:45, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Code Current Sandbox
{{flag|Italy|naval}}  Italy  Italy/sandbox
{{flag|Italy|coast guard}}  Italy  Italy/sandbox
{{navy|Italy}}  Italian Navy  Italy Navy
{{navy|Italy|coast guard}}  Italian Navy  Italy Navy
The ''Marina Militare'' name doesn't work: the link outputted by {{navy}} isn't piped, causing a link to ''Marina Militare''. A hack like Marina Militare{{!}}''Marina Militare'' could work; that would however break any templates that do use a piped link (though no such templates seem to currently exist).
Instead of using a switch within the |link alias-naval= parameter, a separate |link alias-coast guard= could be used if {{navy/core}} is edited to allow such parameters. SiBr4 (talk) 21:26, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2003–2006 flag[edit]

Hi everybody, I have a question about the Italian flag used from 2003 until 2006. I think that the "current" one is quite incorrect, because the Pantone colors (Pantone 18-5642TC, Pantone 11-4201TC, Pantone 18-1660TC) are completely different from the one used in that file. What do you think? -- Nick.mon (talk) 17:36, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Alex 21:
There is a parallel discussion here, please comment there. Primefac (talk) 14:31, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There has been no change in the flag of Italy from 1946 to today (except with unpopular darker colour shade specifications that were later reverted, between 2003-2006). The 1946-2003 flag should be the same as today.

| flag alias = Flag of Italy.svg
| flag alias-1861 = Flag of Italy (1861–1946).svg
| flag alias-1943 = War flag of the Italian Social Republic.svg
| flag alias-1946 = Flag of Italy.svg
| flag alias-2003 = Flag of Italy (2003–2006).svg
| flag alias-civil = Civil Ensign of Italy.svg
| flag alias-naval = Naval ensign of Italy.svg
| link alias-naval = Marina Militare
| link alias-air force = Italian Air Force
| link alias-army = Italian Army

This should be the aliases, it covers the normal flag of Italy
the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946)
The (war) flag of the Italian Social Republic, (1943-1945) (war flag since this was the most commonly seen flag due to the country being in war in its whole (short) existence. The normal flag is otherwise the same as Italy today + also "covered" by flag|Italian Social Republic Italian Social Republic)
Italy|1946 should be , the same as Italy today as this was the when the current Italian flag was adopted (18 June 1946). Many pages currently use flag|Italy|1946 after edits from illegitimate barrister to use the version with other shades made by him, so I assume that simply removing this would cause many empty flags? But it should probably be kept anyway.
Between 2003 and 2006 the government standardized on colours different than what was usually used, but these were reverted in 2006 after people complained that the government had changed the flag and the specifications were changed to better match the commonly used "old colours."
The last 2 are just civil/naval variants.
The other flags not included are just based on the shades used in pictures in different editions of the CIA World Factobook and not official or even real changes to the flag used by Italy

Not done for now: Please get consensus for these changes at Talk:Flag of Italy. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:41, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The point is that there is a consensus, which is the "Flag of Italy" article using sourced information by the editors, (including the sources i link to in my reasons for change). The current version of the template is not the agreed upon situation I want to change because of my opinions, but the un-sourced mass-edits by one man without reasons who goes against the information in the flag article (who now even has his template editing license revoked because of this...). This is just following the consensus of the users who have made the articles of the flag and the information from there...

Delete these lines:

| flag alias-1946 = Flag of Italy.svg

and

| var3 = 1946

Not only is it inaccurate and anachronistic (since the image links to that of a flag that was introduced in 2006), but it's redundant since it's just the same as the standard default flag variant. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 22:10, 25 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Amakuru, what's the issue? The output is the same either way, if the variant parameter does not exist the flag templates will default to File:Flag of Italy.svg. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:51, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @S.A. Julio:, if you have a look at User:Amakuru/Sandbox2 you'll see the issue I found. The first line has the 1946 flag, which is now working again after I reinstated it, the second line has a nonexistent year (1947) and it outputs gobbledegook. I noticed it at List of FIFA World Cup finals, where the 1982 final uses the 1946 template for Italy. Perhaps there's a specific problem with that template, I don't know, but something was broken. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 23:29, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Amakuru: Found the issue. Most flag templates can handle an invalid variant parameter, however Template:Flagright/core seems to have not followed the others, causing the error. I've now fixed the template logic, so there should be no issue, as now seen in your sandbox example. S.A. Julio (talk) 23:41, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@S.A. Julio: OK thanks. I've restored your removal of the 1946 case from the template then. I have to say I'm in two minds about whether this is correct or not - technically the 1946 flag is not identical to the current one, as it simply specified "green" and "red" rather than the very specific shades mentioned now. Given that a different shade was initially deemed to be the correct one (between 2002 and 2006), that suggests that the green may have typically been somewhat different in the prior decades. I guess we've no particular standard to go by though. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 12:25, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please change link alias-naval = Marina Militare to alias-naval = Italian Navy.

As can be see on the page List of navies, only the Italian country template uses the official navy name rather than its commonly known English name. Marina Militare would not be used in English conversations and articles. Seloloving (talk) 11:09, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
