The Great Wall is an upcoming 2016 American-Chinese 3D science fantasy action adventure film directed by Zhang Yimou. The film features an ensemble cast led by Matt Damon and Andy Lau, while the other cast members include Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Jing Tian, Luhan, and Zhang Hanyu. Principal photography began on March 30, 2015, in Qingdao, China. The film is scheduled to be released on November 23, 2016 by Universal Pictures.

Plot

Set in Northern Song Dynasty, the story is about mysteries revolving around the Great Wall of China.[5][6]

Cast

Production

The company and I have been preparing for Great Wall for a long time. It is an action blockbuster. The reason I took the Great Wall project is that there have been requests in the last 10 or 20 years. Now the production is big enough and really appealing. And, very importantly, it has Chinese elements in it.

Zhang Yimou - Director[7]

On March 18, 2014, Chinese director Zhang Yimou was set to direct the epic film.[8][9] On November 6, 2014, Legendary East's CEO, Peter Loehr confirmed that the film would be made with the budget of $135 million, film would be completely in English and it would be the first English-language film directed by Yimou.[4]

Casting

On September 20, 2014, it was revealed that Matt Damon was being eyed to take the lead role in the film.[10] On September 22, Bryan Cranston was also in early talks to join the film; Cranston was also set to play Dalton Trumbo in Jay Roach's upcoming biopic, while Damon was set to star in Ridley Scott's The Martian. And Damon is also preparing to reprise his Jason Bourne role in the next Bourne film, so for both actors to star in The Great Wall it would depend on their schedules.[11] On December 18, 2014, Pedro Pascal was in talks to join the film.[12] On February 12, 2015, THR reported that Willem Dafoe had signed on to star in the film, but his role was still unspecified.[13] On March 11, 2015, Legendary announced the ensemble cast for the film which included Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Zhang Hanyu, Peng Yuyan, Luhan, Lin Gengxin, Ryan Cheng, Chen Xuedong, Huang Xuan, Wang Junkai, Yu Xintian, and Liu Qiong.[14]

Filming

Principal photography of the film began on March 30, 2015, on location in Qingdao.[15] It is the most expensive film ever being shot entirely in China with budget of $135 million.[4][1]

Release

The film is expected to be globally released in 3D by Universal Pictures on November 23, 2016.[1]
