Reflective essay:

I learned a lot about Wikipedia and its’ sourcing techniques while writing this article. When searching for an article to add to I wanted to find one on a topic that I like but that is missing a lot of information. I immediately thought about the film, Disclosure, as I watched it when it first came out last year and was really moving and informative to watch. I was surprised at how underdeveloped its’ Wiki page was, considering how monumental and important this film is. I knew that I wanted to do this article right away and it would be easy for me to add to this article. I ended up editing the plot paragraph a little bit, and my main focus was on the cast. There was a general cast list in the plot, but considering how important everyone featured in the film is, I figured there should be a more expanded cast list, especially because some people did not have an existing Wikipedia article. Then I also added a section for the awards and nominations the film has received so far, and included all of my references that I referred to. I enjoyed the peer review process, as I was able to see what other people were doing with their articles. I think I gave good feedback, commenting on the technical writing as well as what I found to be good to add or could be improved upon. The peer reviews I received were helpful in recognizing that they also thought a longer cast description was useful. I haven’t received any feedback from any other Wikipedia editors and I know there were only two editors who had worked on my same article before me. This Wikipedia article assignment was unlike any other assignment I’ve done before, and I really enjoyed it. In all other classes they always tell you not to use Wikipedia as a source, since it can be edited by anyone. But doing this assignment shows how it can be useful source and it also could allow someone to understand a topic better if they actually contribute to an article. Though I’ve seen this film before, doing a deep dive into each of the featured transgender people in the film, I was able to learn a lot more about them and their impacts. I think my contribution definitely helped to expand Wikipedia’s coverage of marginalized groups and topics. It was a little difficult contributing to this film that focuses on transgender people in the entertainment industry as some of the very important people in the film did not Wikipedia pages or even many articles about them on the internet. For some people I was only able to find the basic information about them, like their roles in movies or shows, so I couldn’t offer that much insight. But I think anyone who comes across this page hopefully will watch or has already watched the film, therefore they have that insight that is offered through the documentary. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment as it was a unique way to not only write something about a topic, but also to learn more and contribute to the learning of others.
