From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.

Notability[edit]

PART 1

When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.

A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.

General notability guidelines[edit]

1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.

Answer: New editors generally won't know as much policy as more experienced ones, we cannot assume the same amount of clue from them compared to more experienced editors. Assuming good faith and not biting new editors avoids driving away new editors that are willing and would contribute but haven't gotten a chance to learn much policy yet who might later grow to become more established ones. AGF encourages bold editing and prevents all editors from being discouraged. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

2. In your own words, how is notability defined in Wikipedia?

Answer: The ability for us to write an article that is supported by reliable sources to ensure that topics are "worthy of note" and prevent the inclusion of every topic. The exception being topics in WP:NOT should not be included and thus is not notable. A topic is presumed to be notable if it meets any accepted notability criteria. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. In Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list if (1) it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject whee by the sources talk "directly" about the subject in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?

Answer: No, Wikipedia is not a a how to guide so instructions on how to change a car tire is not a notable topic. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?

Answer: GNG goes for all articles and topics while SNGs goes for its specific subject. If any SNG is met, an article should not be speedly deleted (in all deletion methods) before sufficient time is given to locate sources. SNGs and GNG are all used to determine notability and an article can be deleted at afd even if both are met (unlikely). SNGs are based on GNG, if an SNG is to be met, the article either meets GNG or is likely to. I think an article can be patrolled if any GNG or SNG is met. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

Specific notability guidelines[edit]

5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?

Answer: Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and the guideline suggests that "scheduled or expected future events should be included only if the event is notable and almost certain to take place". If there exists significant reliable sources that would allow the article to achieve notability, and is almost certain to take place, then an article should be made. While the page is created without any sources, which would certainly not prove notability, notability is based on the existence of sources and sources are likely to exist for the subject. Therefore the subject is probably notable. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

6. A New York city based 2021 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.

Answer: WP:ORG should apply, which is basically GNG. I would say that the subject is not clearly notable under any notability guideline. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

7. Guram Kutateladze who is a Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 12-2.

Answer: WP:NMMA applies, the topic is likely to be notable due to them being ranked top 10 for their weight class in sherdog. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

☒N Not providing World top ten ranking by Sherdog and on Fight Metrix ranking he ranks #20 in Lightweight on 04/01/2021 - see here-1 which most likely he has not been ranked in top 10 in Sherdog ranking. In addition, he has only one fight under top tier MMA promotion (UFC) and short to meet at least 3 fights under MMA SSG notability guidelines - see here -2. Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2022 and to be released on August 2023 in the cinemas.

Answer: WP:NFF should apply and exclude the article from being notable for being too speculative. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY because "Films that have not been confirmed by reliable sources to have commenced principal photography should not have their own articles". Cassiopeia talk 06:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2021 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.

Answer: I think WP:GNG should apply along with WP:NPOL, I don't think there is a WP:AUD like guideline for politicians so I think the subject is likely notable. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Actually on second thought: If they were elected, WP:NPOL would apply, otherwise WP:BASIC might, don't think there is a WP:AUD like guideline for biographies. Justiyaya 09:34, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
☒N To pass WP:NPOL, once needs to be officially elected to state/national position unless the subject is covered by national newspapers in significant coverage for most candidates would have some coverage by local newspapers during their campaign. Cassiopeia talk 07:01, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2020 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Answer: None of WP:MUSICBIO should be met unless they have met GNG. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

11. Carlos Alós-Ferrer

Answer: WP:NACADEMIC point 8, article says "editor in chief of the Journal of Economic Psychology" assuming that the journal is well established. Justiyaya 03:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Sources[edit]

Background for trainees[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for such content claimed should be supported by independent (secondary), reliable sources for verification. Please read WP:RS, WP:IS, WP:RSP, WP:V, WP:PROVEIT, WP:Primary, WP:Secondary, and WP:Tertiary and answered the the below questions in your own words.
You could contact WP:RX if you could not find the sources yourself either on web due to Paywall content or printed books.

Exercises[edit]

1.
Topic Explanation 5 Examples Comment by Cass
Reliable source A source that has published, recent (depending on context and subject), good editorial oversight, and a reputation for factual information. A source reliable in one field might not be in another. Reliable isn't a on/off switch but more of a scale.
  1. (example)The Guardian newspaper
  2. New York Times
  3. Washington Post
  4. Pitchfork (website)
  5. (most) peer reviewed studies published in a reputable journal
  6. Nature (journal)

User generated sources Sources that rely on users to produce content. Mostly unacceptable as a reliable source. Limit use to (certain) claims about the writer themselves.
  1. Twitter
  2. Reddit
  3. Metacritic (certain sections)
  4. Wordpress
  5. Wikipedia
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:27, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Non Independent source A source that shares a conflict of interest with the subject themselves or relies mostly on press releases, non-independence sources can be used to support claims about the writer if there is no exceptional claim but otherwise should not be used.
  1. A flower shop website's about its self
  2. A .gov website about the US gov
  3. New York times writing about the New York Times
  4. A tweet stating the subject's birthday written by the subject
  5. A youtube promotional ad for a product.

2.
Type Explanation Sources (15 Primary ; 5 Secondary ; 5 Tertiary) Comment by Cass
Primary Sources that are close to the subject. Often containing original research or investigation, or offer insider accounts to an event. Should only be used with caution on Wiki and replaced with secondary sources if possible.
  1. (example) scientific journal articles reporting experimental research results
  2. Op-Ed of someone's account of a thing
  3. Interviews
  4. Diaries
  5. Autobiographies
  6. Governmental Records

  17. Phone calls
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Secondary A source that use primary sources along with author's own analysis to create discussion, should be the preferred source when writing articles and research.
  1. (example) newspaper
  2. Review articles
  3. Argumentative essays based on the author and primary sources
  4. Books summarizing and providing the author's opinion on a research topic

  6. Reviews of a work of art
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Tertiary A source that summarizes primary and secondary sources, should not be used for academic research, cite with caution on Wikipedia.
  1. (example) encyclopedias
  2. Textbooks

  6. How to guides written by a third party on multiple products
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

3.

Subject Primary Secondary Tertiary Comment by Cass
Example: Art Example:Sculpture Example:Article critiquing the sculpture Example:Encyclopedic article on the sculptor
History Artifact Research article analyzing how the artifact was used Text book introducing history of a place checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Science Newly produced experimental research Review article analyzing new research Wikipedia page on the topic checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Athletes Self published post written by the athlete themselves on their achievements Newspaper report on the athlete list of the athletes competitions wins/losses that summarizes reliable sources checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

4. Please explain in your own words why the content claimed needs to be verified?

Answer: Content needs to verified to ensure that the content is accurate and so that researchers have citations that they can use elsewhere. Justiyaya 08:55, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Content needs to verifiable so we may know where the info/source from for we could know if the source is independent and/or reliable, and not because it is the facts or true - see WP:But it's true!. If source indicated XXX is from Jamaica but the fact XXX is from Cuba, we put XXX is from Jamaica in article as per source. We will correct the info when the sources (not need to be the same source) correct itself. For example Alexander the Great - How he die is based on which sources you read, from poising, to malaria and typhoid fever to infectious (meningitis) to acute pancreatitis and etc. Cassiopeia talk 06:23, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

5.Could we used Wikipedia as the source? and why?

Answer: No, Wikipedia is a tertiary source and thus should not be used, additionally it is also a user generated source. Justiyaya 08:55, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

{{tick}. Wikipedia can not be the sources as the content of Wikipedia is supported by "other sources" - See WP:CIRCULAR. Wikipedia is a online knowledge sharing platform. Readers should check the sources in the article and verify/read the info themselves. Cassiopeia talk 06:23, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

6.Give an example and explain why a source is reliable but not independent of a subject?

Answer: If a source is reliable, but is either writing about themselves, or share a conflict of interest with the subject, then that source is not independent of a subject but reliable. For example, the New York Times is widely accepted as reliable, but should not be used as an independent source for New York Times Co. v. United States, at the very least when the case is occurring, recent retrospective reports might be considered more independent. Justiyaya 08:55, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Good. Cassiopeia talk 06:23, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

7.Give an example and explain why a source is independent source but not reliable?

Answer: The Daily Mail might write about something it has no conflict of interest with and do so without much bias but it is considered generally unreliable because The Daily Mail has gotten a reputation for publishing false information. Justiyaya 08:55, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 06:23, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. He works includes The Guggenheim, swirling, snail-shaped museum in the middle of Manhattan.[1][2] Fallingwater, which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture."[3] This is one of Wright's most famous private residences (completed 1937), was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., at Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Constructed over a 30-foot waterfall, it was designed according to Wright's desire to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings. The house was intended to be more of a family getaway, rather than a live-in home.[4]

Verifiability[edit]

Please read WP:V and answer the questions below
15. If the subject has two sons and it is supported by three independent, reliable sources but in reality he has 3 sons. Could we change the content from "2" sons to "3 sons"? and why?

Answer: It depends, if the subject has a self published source claiming to have three sons, it might be alright under WP:BLPSELFPUB, otherwise Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth should be followed Justiyaya 06:28, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Filtering - Criteria for speedy deletion[edit]

PART 2

We have looked at the requirements needed for a page to meet notable, policy and type of sources to merit a page in Wikipedia in Part 1 (Assignment 1, 2 & 3). In assignment 4, we look at what type of articles need to be filtered out from our system when reviewing a page. There are many criteria of WP:Criteria for speedy deletion. Here we discuss (1) General criteria (G1-G14), (2) Article criteria (A1-A11) and R2.
Please do the following
  1. Pls set up your CSD log by installing MYCSD so I could review your CSD nomination. After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes - see instruction at Wikipedia:Bypass your cache.
  2. Bookmark Earwig's Copyvio Detector in computer; and install Earwig Copyvio Detector script. (The "copyvio" will appear on the left panel under "Tools" section on every page in Wikipedia.
  3. Install CV-revdel and after saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes - see instruction at Wikipedia:Bypass your cache.

General criteria[edit]

Pls read WP:COPYVIO, WP:REVDEL, WP:COPYPASTE, WP:DCM and WP:G12 and answer the questions below.
3. When do we nominated a page for WP:G12 and when do we WP:REVDEL the COPYVIO text?

Answer: If the entire page is copyvio, and there is no content to be saved, and the page history has no clean (non-copyvio) text, then G12. If a user recently added content copied from another site, or some of the page is not copyvio and can be cleaned, then remove the section/part of the article and request revdel for the appropriate range.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 01:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

4. What constitute copyright infringement/violation.

Answer: Close paraphrasing and directly copying and pasting from a source/photo/content incompatable with Wikipedia's licences without claims of fair use or pretending that it is their own work and without a email to VRT donating the content is a copyright violation and should be removed to ensure the encyclopedia is free and open per WP:5P3.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 01:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

5. Why some of the texts found in an article are identical as per its sources and yet they are not considered copyright violation? Please provide three examples.

Answer i: Quotations attributed and limited in length claiming fair use, see In Rainbows#Critical reception for an example.

checkY. Good. Cassiopeia talk 01:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Answer ii: Content copied from a compatable licence adapted for English Wikipedia, see Template:Creative Commons text attribution notice.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 01:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Answer iii: Some data does not fall under the protection of copyright, like a list of participants competiting in a event or a list of metalists may sometimes be the exact same as the source.

☒N. Citing primary which is a public domain in a "direct copy and paste / verbatim texts" such as United States Declaration of Independence which was published in 1775 as the Copyright Law gives the copyright protection to the “original works of authorship fixed in in a tangible medium of expression” in the newspaper, magazine and freelance article at the moment of their creation, for the life of the creator plus 70 years after, and 95 years for corporation publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is shorter.01:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

6. Why copyright violation needs to be stamped out from Wikipedia and who determined when a violation is lawfully taking place?

Answer: Wikipedia is meant to be a free encyclopedia, if we allow copyrighted works to linger on Wikipedia, it will not be free. Additionally, copyright violations will create legal issues for both the foundation and its contributors, as the copyright owner can take action against the WMF (probably with a DMCA) or less likely the editor that inserted the copyrighted text. The only time when a copyrighted work that is not compatable with Wikipedia's licences can be inserted is when it follows Wikipedia's non free content guidelines which allow quotes and other media to be used under fair use. Ultimately, copyright laws determine if a page is copyvio or not, falsely releasing copyrighted works to creative commons can cause damages or legal issues later on.

checkY. copyright infringement violation entails legal implications. Wikipedia takes violation of copyvio "very seriously". Cassiopeia talk 01:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

7. Pls read WP:COPYVIO, WP:REVDEL, WP:COPYPASTE, WP:DCM and WP:G12 and provide 5 successful CSD 12 articles you have nominated from Special:NewPagesFeed (New Page Patrol or Article for Creation section). 9. Pls read WP:NPPDRAFT. Please explain when to a new page (NPP article) can be move to draft and what should be considered when doing such move?

Answer: Any move to draft must be not previously contested or have copyright violations in the page that is to be moved. If the creator of the page has a clear conflict of interest with the subject, the page can be moved without additional considerations. Otherwise there needs to be evidence of no active improvement and the page needs to be not ready for mainspace while being plausably notable.

Copyright violation and paid editors[edit]

Pls read WP:COI and WP:PAID and answer the following question
11. How do we spot a COI/PAID editor?

Answer: Look at the paid editing disclosure on their userpage that is required by TOS[Joke]

If the username of the editor is similar to the subject and/or if they edit only in one subject and/or if they upload an image that cannot be reverse image searched or is a higher resolution than all the ones available. A clear promotional tone when editing. Excessive citing of primary sources. Excessive use of external links. (all listed before may not be really definitive but added up can be enough circumstantial evidence) If any of "our organization", "my client" or "(subject's name) told me to" come up.

checkY. COI editors are permitted to edit Wikipedia and create on the affected articles; however, it is "HIGHLY DISCOURAGE/NOT RECOMMENDED" as it is very difficult for the COI editors to write the article/input info into the affected article in [[WP:NPOV|neutral point of view}}. COI editors can be sotted as per follow:
1.Use person pronouns and possessives (I, we, my, our)
2.Multiple references to company, financial listings, staff lists, interviews, own publication, press release, blog and with clean references
3.Well written prose 'too perfect to be true' and only with single/2 edits
4.Editors have created multiple company related articles
5.Editors disclosed their COI/PAID in their userpage (not tag with COI disclose), or disclosure when they ask question in WP:Teahouse, WP:Help Desk, WP:AFCHD or receivers' talk pages. Cassiopeia talk 01:44, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

12. What you should do when you review an NPP article and notice the creator is a COI editor?

Answer: Check if the article contains copyvio or is clearly promotional, if so, tag with G11/12. Check if the article went through AFC (see page history/talk page) Else a draftification may be nessesary per point 3 of Wikipedia:New pages patrol#Drafts and multiple mentions in WP:COI. Maybe warn the editor with {{Template:Uw-coi}}, maybe tag the page with {{Template:COI}} if they haven't disclosed yet. A trip to the noticeboard may be nessesary if the issue cannot be resolved.

checkY. tag the article with COI (Assignment 6) and the editor needs to adhered to COI/PAID required (state/disclose in their user page and the article talk page about their COI affiliation as per COI instructions) All articles newly created by COI and PAID editors in the mainspace MUST moved to Draft space so the article would be reviewed first by the AfC (article for creation) in the draft space by AfC reviewer and if approved then it will move to main space for the New Page (NPPS) reviewer for the second time regardless how long and how many articles have been created by the same editor. Cassiopeia talk 01:44, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

13. Please read WP:PAID. What you should do when you review an NPP article and notice the creator is a paid editor?

Answer: asically everything above but maybe use {{Template:Uw-paid1}} and {{Template:Undisclosed paid}} instead if they havent disclosed. Paid editors are required to disclose "employer, client, and affiliation" based on terms of service.

checkY. See comment on Q12. Cassiopeia talk 01:44, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Justiyaya This is the last hard assignment and the rest are easy except the final exam. For R2 pls tag the article with {{db-r2}}. There are few ways to move a page from one name space to another (draft, main/(article), category, template, File, Help and etc). We can use Twinckle and just move the page from main space to draft space; however, since this is a new page program which means when we review a new page (new article) and deem the article do have protential to be notable but lack IRS (independent, reliable sources), we could do a R2 (request from admin to move the page). Once you have don enough successful R2, you can request for Move Manger right. So use the R2 Template and request a R2 and wait for admin to move the page. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 23:07, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: Yeah I see, thanks. Would it be okay if I use the move to draft script and you can view it via Special:Draftify_log/Justiyaya (redlink but should still work, no logs right now)? I'm slooowly working my way down. Justiyaya 23:19, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

Filtering - Deletion policy & other alternatives[edit]

In assignment 4, we look at articles which fits in WP:Criteria for speedy deletion (CSD) where by the the articles are deleted within a few hours to 24 hours from the time of the nomination. In Assignment 5, we discuss the what actions should be taken for those articles do not fit under the CSD criteria but do not meet relevant criteria for content of the encyclopedia.

Please read WP:PROD, WP:BLPPROD, WP:MERGE, WP:DRAFTIFY, WP:NPPDRAFT and WP:REDIR, WP:AFD and answer the following questions. (Provide links and hisdiff where they are applied.)

1. Under what circumstances do we propose deletion (PROD) a page and why do we do that?

Answer: A prod is done when no CSD criteria is able to delete the page, and no alternative to deletion (including redirecting immediately or requesting a merge) is viable. The deletion should be unlikely to be contested, and unlike AFD, the tag can be removed by anyone.

checkY. PROD is an easier option than AfD or FfD as it doesn't require discussion, however if someone objected to PROD it can't be used anymore. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

2. What should we do before we PROD a page? and what should be considered /action during a nomination?

Answer: Check for previous AFDs and PRODs, check if any CSD criteria applies, page history for recent changes, and check if the reason for deletion is valid. Do a search for references if requesting on notability grouds. The only required action for a PROD to be technically valid is to add the prod template to the article, but an old prod template should be also added to the talk page and it is best practice to notify the page creator.

3. What is the criteria when nominated a BLPPROD? If we choose not to BLPPROD a page what are the alternatives? (give three examples with explanations)

Answer: The page is about a living person but contains no sources, a BLPPROD can only be removed with a reliable source supporting any statement in the article. If a article cannot be nominated

  1. The article can be deleted via standard PROD (PROD and BLPPROD are different, PROD can be used with any article that has not been previously nominated for PROD/AFD before)
  2. The article can be draftified (always an option per NPPDRAFT if the article is unlikely to survive AFD and is created recently)
  3. The article can be redirected (if the subject is notable primarily for a single event or is involved in a musical ensemble but is not notable on their own)
checkY. The other alternative (1) AfD but pls do a WP:BEFORE first. (2) CSD if the page meet CSD criteria. (3) Place inline citation into the body text after find proper independent reliable sources an edit to meet GNG and mark review. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

4. In what circumstances we nominate an AFD and what step should be done prior such action.

Answer: Check if any other deletion method apply then check if any alternative to deletion applies. Check the talk page of the article and the page history for previous discussions and recent changes. Conduct a search for references if the deletion is on notability.

checkY. We need to do a WP:BEFORE prior AfD besides the above. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

5 How long do PROD, BLPPROD and AFD last prior it is deleted or decline?

Answer: PROD, BLPPROD, and AFD should last atleast a week unless objection for PROD and BLPPROD or speedy keep/delete for AFD. AFD discussions can be relisted allowing it to extend for longer than a week.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

6. When a page has been previously BLPROD and was provide a source; however if you still think that article should be deleted, what can you do?

Answer: Check if the source is reliable, you might be able to reinstate the BLPPROD per Wikipedia:Proposed deletion of biographies of living people#Objecting if objection not viable then AFD is probably the next place to go.

checkY. BLPPROD doesn't supersede any of the other deletion policies, therefore the article previously tagged BLPPROD still can be deleted per speedy deletion, PROD or AfD. Also it can be draftified or merged. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

7. When do we decide whether an article should be PROD or WP:BLPROD or WP:AFD?

Answer: BLPPROD has a quite specific criteria, if BLPPROD is not satisfied check for a previous AFD/PROD nomination, if no previous nomination is found and the deletion is likely not to be objected, PROD it. If no other deletion method can be taken, AFD the article.

checkY The first thing we do when we review an article is to check if the article content fit CSD criteria especially G11 and G12. Then check for possible options to avoid deletion (such as improvement, draftifying, redirecting or merging) we might consider the deletion. If we think the deletion is uncontroversial, but the article doesn't qualify for any of the CSD, we can use PROD. PROD can be used only once and should survive 7 days. If the article is contested we can still nominate it per AfD. If the article is a biography of a living person without a single source of any form we may use BLPPROD. If the tag is removed (after having added at least one reliable source) we can still nominate it for PROD or AfD if we believe it doesn't comply with Wikipedia policies. We use AfD if CSD, PROD OR BLPPROD do not apply. The deletion discussion usually lasts for 7 days prior closing. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

8. What are the reason to WP:Merge a page to another page?

Answer: If an article is a stub or otherwise very short and is unlikely to grow anytime soon, but the subject exists based on a RS. When a non A10 eligible article covers what is basically the same thing as another article or contains significant overlap, or if a short article needs another article to understand.

checkY. We merge a page to another when article duplicates/having a large portion of the same content of the subject of another page. 2. Very short articles that aren't expected to be expanded or can't be expanded as there's not much information on the subject. 3. If one article requires additional information for better understanding which is already available in another larger article. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

9. List 10 reasons we purpose WP:REDIR.

Answer:

  1. Title of a work that is not independently notable
  2. Names of people involved in an event that is not independently notable
  3. Acronyms
  4. Alternative names
  5. Plurals of words
  6. Alternative/incorrect captialization
  7. Alternative/incorrect punctuation
  8. Non neutral name
  9. Misspellings
  10. Names of sections in articles
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

10. When article can be moved to draft space?

Answer: Duplicate of above section

Recent creation, not ready for mainspace, no copyright violation and no evidence of active improvement. Or the creator has a COI.

checkY We also move article back to draft space if the article is not notable but have potential to be notable. (Note: Main space articles should be notable as per Wikipedia guidelines) Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

11. Nominate 5 articles for WP:AFD by using WP:Twinkle and provide explanation of your nomination.

Answer 1: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/First Kill (album) - Fails GNG and NALBUM, all sources in article is either non independent or unreliable, can only find passing mentions with a BEFORE search. PROD removed to redirect and redirect contested, gaining consensus at AFD per 2021 RFC.

checkY - result as redirect - see here. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Answer 2: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Southwest Kansas Storm - PROD available but asking for consensus to draftify, direct draftification not available per 2022 RFC (that limits the time on draftifications after mainspace creation). Fails GNG/Subject notability guideline, mostly routine coverage found.

☒N - result as draffy - see here. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Justiyaya See comments above. Pls note when PROD or BLP prod and AfD and especially CSD you need to be sure the article will be closed as per your nomination. The same questions will be in your final exams and pls get it right as it will effect your grade. Let me know if you have any questions or you are ready to move on to next assignmet. Cassiopeia talk 05:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: For answer 2 and 3 in the AFD section, I've included draftify/redirect in my nomination statement, the Southwest Kansas Storm case was due to it being created over 90 days ago, therefore uneligable for direct draftification. The Snowball Effect one was due to a potentially controversial redirect, with one revert in the page history. What should I have done instead of putting them on AFD? Justiyaya 00:39, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Justiyaya AfD Q2 - I dont think you have stated redirect in your nomination. Q3 -you did state redirect - my mistake and re-marked a check. Sometimes a subject of the article has been mentioned /related to another another without we knowing and the AfD could resulted in redirect but if no voters know about the other article and no one mention it then the nominated article could resulted in delete. As you can see Wikipedia at times is imperfect and AfD result might not be as clear cut as per guidelines. Just an example, any rail road station, with just one not independent, reliable source will always be a keep for some historical reasons and I have seen cricket players from Indian with only first name which were difficult to to verify by the source were resulted a keep as voters arguing to death that English Wikipedia was bias and racist... I am a little bit strict in marking in assignment answers, so participant would be more careful when it come to the final exam. When it come to review - We first checkt if the article violate G11, G12, copyvio , any COI/Paid (all paid article must move to draft sapece - frist needs to be reviewed by AfC (article for creation - draft) reviewer/patroller, then it will move to new page and reviewed the second time by NPP / new page reviewer and the article need to marked all the WP:PAID and WP:COI desclaimber in the artilce talk page and creator user page). If the new article meet notability, then we leave the article alone, if not then see PROP/BLPPROP, merge, redirect or AfD is needed. I hope I had answered your questions. Cassiopeia talk 06:02, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Tagging[edit]

In this assignment we look at tagging pages for problems. There any many tags available in Wikipedia and we will look at some of them here.

Tagging in the article[edit]

Please read WP:TAGGING and answer the questions below. Please provide explanation in your own words and provide hist diff when applicable.

1. Why do we place tags on the article?

Answer: We add tags when there are issues to an article. We place tags so that we can notify readers of issues and to ask other editors to fix the issues (especially when we are not confident with fixing it ourselves).

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 08:01, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

2. What does "drive by tagging" mean?

Answer: When tags are added but the problem is not obvious and is not adequately explained using a talk page section or using an edit summary.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 08:01, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

3. List down 8 common tagging should be avoided in an article?

Answer:

  1. Tagging to make a point
  2. Using excessive tags
  3. Using tags that serve the same purpose
  4. Using the wrong tags
  5. Using vague tags when more specific ones can be used
  6. Tagging when the problem is not obvious and not explained
  7. Tagging for really minor problems that can be easily fixed
  8. Tagging an article when it can be easily fixed by the person tagging
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 08:01, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

4. When it is appropriate to remove the tags?

Answer: Any editor without a conflict of interest to the subject can remove a tag from a page if they think that the tag is unnecessary because the issue is either resolved, or didn't exist in the first place. An edit summary or talk page message can be helpful for communication when un-tagging.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 08:01, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Communication and editor interactions[edit]

Wikipedia project is a collaboration of many editors, some are experienced and some are new to the Project ad Wikipedia values all constructive editors' contributions alike. Communication in a civil, respectful manner is a vital part in Wikipedia, and it should be welcomed rather than discouraged especially to new editors who are not familiar with Wikipedia guidelines and policies for most new editors find it is a steep learning curve during the first few months of editing articles or creating articles in Wikipedia. Please read Wikipedia:Assume good faith, WP:BITE, WP:CIVIL, Wikipedia:Etiquette, and welcome template and answer the following questions. Do provide links and hist diff where appropriate.

Communication[edit]

1. How do we deal with a bad faith registered user and how do we deal with a bad faith IP editor?

Answer:

For both of them, the first step would be to revert their problematic edits, tag their problematic pages for deletion (depends on type) and WP:Warn them on the respective policies. If they persist, they can be reported on WP:AIV or similar noticeboards Justiyaya 06:03, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
