Flula Borg is a German techno DJ, hype man, actor, and YouTube personality who is better known as DJ Flula or simply Flula (often stylized as f|u|a). He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California, in the United States.[1]

Career

Beginnings in Germany

Flula grew up in Erlangen, located in northern Bavaria, Germany.[1] Being an only child, he often had to entertain himself, and from an early age one of his favorite pastimes was investigating and recording the variety of sounds in the world around him. This interest in sound and music led him to teach himself to beatbox by imitating popular rappers of the time.[2][3]

His career as an entertainer began when he joined a Schuhplattler dance troupe.[4] He later became interested in the music the group's DJ played and soon shifted his professional attention from dance to music, touring southern Germany as a techno and hip hop DJ.[5] His early music was fairly experimental, incorporating real sounds into his music,[4] and this style continues to influence some of his work today.

Growing popularity

Flula's recognition in America began in 2006 with his first appearance on Current TV, in a short documentary called Take Me Home James.[4] The show profiled an innovative cab service targeted toward people who had been drinking and did not want to drive under the influence of alcohol. Flula, who appeared to be inebriated, was the customer who was filmed.[6][7] The piece was one of Current TV's all-time most popular segments and Flula made several more appearances on the channel as a result.[8]

Flula had a popular weekly show on Stickam from 2008 until the website's closure in early 2013.[9] A viewer poll selected him as a correspondent, performer, and host for Stickam's 2008 South by Southwest (SXSW) coverage in Austin, Texas.[10][11]

Online video

Flula launched a YouTube channel in February 2007.[12] It currently has over 400,000 subscribers and 52 million total views[12], and a number of his individual videos have several million views. The channel presents a wide variety of content, including:

  • interviews and collaborations with various celebrities, including Susan Sarandon, Ed Helms, Jason Segel, Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, Vince Vaughn, Steve Carell, Will Farrell, Paul Rudd, Larry King, RZA, David Giuntoli, and many more
  • original music and "AutoTunes", covers of popular songs recorded in a single audio take in his car or other vehicles, such as a rowboat, a tour bus, or a Zamboni
  • "flogs", or "Flula-vlogs", in which he humorously expresses his confusion regarding English-language figures of speech such as "Humpday", "spilling the beans", and "sorry not sorry"
  • "I Have 10 Minutes; Tell Me What to Do", a series in which Flula allows Twitter followers to give him instructions for a 10-minute interval and he posts the video results
  • original poems, haiku, stories, and animation

Besides posting on his own channel, Flula often collaborates with other popular YouTubers such as Grace Helbig,[13][14] Hannah Hart,[15][16] Mamrie Hart,[17][18] Rhett and Link,[19] Miranda Sings,[20][21] Taryn Southern,[22] and others.

In 2009 Flula participated in a video on the Ownage Pranks channel in which he pretended to have Tourette syndrome while prank calling a McDonalds restaurant.[23] He spewed a stream of nonsensical profanity including the memorable line, "I want to Chick Mc-N-Fuck it your Chicken McNugget". As of 2014, the prank remains in the top 10% of Ownage Pranks videos with 2.8 million views.[24]

From 2009 to the present, Flula has been employed off and on as a correspondent and presenter for a number of popular culture outlets including Screen Junkies and Metacafe.[25][26] In addition to working as a presenter on What's Trending, he had his own show on that channel called "WTF with Flula" in 2012.[27]

In 2013 Flula presented a series on the Machinima channel entitled "What the Flula?!" in which he recapped TV shows ridiculously poorly for comedic effect. To date he has done a series of recaps for Game of Thrones[28] and one for Breaking Bad.[29] He was also the official spokesperson and correspondent for Gibson guitars at Musikmesse 2013.[30]

Film and television

In addition to online video, Flula has made a number of appearances on television and in films. He was a guest on several segments of AT&T U-Verse's Buzz, hosted by his friend David Giuntoli,[31] and he had a recurring role in the fourth season of Auction Hunters on Spike.[32][33] Most recently, he was featured on a 2013 episode of Last Call with Carson Daly.[5]

Flula has appeared in a number of short films over the years, and he has more recently acted in two independently produced feature-length films, both to be released in 2014.[33] In May of 2014 it was announced that he will play a member of a competing a capella group in Pitch Perfect 2, to be released in the spring of 2015.[34]

Music

Music remains a major part of Flula's life and work. He released an original EP called Roach Bug in 2010 and has released a number of single tracks as well. He was named #3 on Billboard's Next Big Sound chart in November of 2011.[35] Many of his YouTube videos contain original songs, such as "Flula in Germany", an ode to the joys of his home country, and "SPC 4 Life", about his love of sweet potato casserole, both of which have received coverage in mainstream media outlets.[36][37]

Flula is a vocal sports fan and often uses his original music to express his appreciation of various athletes, such as Jeremy Lin, James Harden, and Anthony Davis. The best known of these are his two music videos, "Pass the Rock" and "German Moses", as well as the song "dirk41", which are dedicated to his countryman and hero, Dirk Nowitzki.[38][39][40] Nowitzki's team, the Dallas Mavericks, have played the songs during several games[41] and have collaborated with Flula to make a number of videos promoting the team.[42] The popularity of "German Moses" in particular earned him a songwriting residency with SportsRadio 94WIP in Philadelphia in 2012[43], during which he wrote songs about Michael Vick, Chase Utley, Roy Halladay, Ilya Bryzgalov, and Andy Reid.[44]

In addition to original music, Flula features covers of popular songs in his "AutoTunes" series. The title is a play on words, as they are all performed in his car or other vehicles. The covers often incorporate collaborations with such celebrities as Hannah Hart and Grace Helbig, Miranda Sings, We the Kings, and Dirk Nowitzki.[45]. One of the most popular was a collaboration with Sir Mix-a-Lot in which they sang Mix-A-Lot's 1992 hit "Baby Got Back" in Flula's rental car.[46] His AutoTunes video with YouTube celebrity Chester See, a cover of "No Diggity" by Blackstreet, has nearly three million views[47] and was nominated for a Streamy Award in 2014.[48]

Flula has continued his early habit of incorporating real sounds into his music, such as an entire song created from sounds collected on a basketball court.[49] He also has attended press junkets for several films and, in addition to interviewing the celebrities, he often collects sounds from them and blends the sounds into songs. Examples include the casts of 'Jeff, Who Lives at Home'[50] and 'Anchorman 2'[51].

In 2014, a song composed and produced by Flula, titled "Camp It Up", was featured in the film Camp Takota. The song features lyrics written and performed by Mamrie Hart, Grace Helbig, and Hannah Hart, who also starred in the film.[52]

Live performance

In 2008, Flula won the Scion Hypeman Competition, becoming the contest's only European champion to date. Judges Skillz, DJ Clark Kent, and Lyricist Lounge co-founder Ant Marshall chose Flula over Rashad "Ra-Ra" Jenkins and SAMiAM in the finals.[53]

From 2010 to 2014, Flula served as the official host and MC for the Campus MovieFest, College Battle of the Bands, and Campus DJ tours presented by AT&T, Chegg, SESAC, Gibson/Epiphone, and other sponsors.[54][55][56] He also returned to SXSW in 2013, hosting and performing at a "Flula Fluncheon" sponsored by POP-AUT and Sonos.[57]

Flula has performed at The Fillmore in San Francisco, Irving Plaza in New York City, and the Roundhouse in London.[58] He regularly performs live in Los Angeles at venues such as The Viper Room,[59] the Derby,[60] The Wiltern,[58] the Roxy,[61] the Lyric,[62] and more. In addition to other performances at the Lyric, he frequently hosts its biweekly Super Secret Comedy Show, created by comedian Hunter Hill. The show headlines popular performers such as David Koechner, Anthony Jeselnik, Damon Wayans, and Sarah Silverman.

Since early 2013, Flula has been the official spokesperson for the City of Allen, Texas, where he makes humorous videos highlighting positive things in the city, most notably its public recreation program.[63] In August 2013 he was chosen to perform on the main stage at VidCon, an event hosting over 12,000 participants.[64] In 2013 and 2014, he hosted Bedrocktoberfest, a one-day, multi-artist festival featuring music and magic at Bedrock LA, a recording and performance space for musicians in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles.[65][66] In March of 2014, Flula appeared at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston with Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart in their show, This Might Get Weird, Y'all, performing as their opening act and as the onstage DJ throughout the show.[67] He also participated in the Los Angeles and San Francisco performances of the No Filter Show, starring Helbig and Hart as well as Hannah Hart, in August of 2014.[68][69]
