Wii Miidia is a free and open source media center application for the Wii. Wii Miidia can play most audio and video file formats, as well as display images from the Wii's built in SD card slot, USB drives, the Internet and LAN shares. It is based on two media center software for other gaming consoles: XBMC for the Xbox and mfe (MPlayer Front End) for GameCube.

Audio/Video playback and handling[edit]
Wii Miidia can play media from the Wii's built-in SD Card slot. Wii Miidia can also take advantage of the Wii's WiFi or ethernet connection to stream them over SMB/SAMBA/CIFS shares (Windows File-Sharing), ReplayTV DVRs, UPnP (Universal Plug and Play ) shares, XBMSP (Xbox Media Stream Protocol) shares, or stream iTunes-shares via DAAP. If internet access is available, it can also stream Internet-video-streams and play Internet-radio-stations (such as SHOUTcast). Wii Miidia also includes the option to submit music usage statistics to Last.fm. It also has music/video-playlist features, picture/image-slideshow functions, an MP3+CDG karaoke function and many audio-visualizations and screensavers. Wii Miidia output resolution is limited to 480p by the Wii's hardware.

Peripheral support[edit]
Wii Miidia is controlled using a Wii Remote. A USB keyboard is supported for text entry.
History[edit]
dCiSo was a fan of XBMC and said that seeing the hard work on the XBMC project inspired him to give back.[1] Most of the streaming abilities were based on XBMC.
Initially, mfe was used to provide video playback. This has proved to be unstable and a complete rewrite was necessary. The rewrite caused the first release to be delayed from May 2008 to September 2008. Wii Miidia is therefore no longer based on the Linux operating system.[2]
Running[edit]
Wii Miidia is a hobby project that is developed by volunteers in their spare-time for free. It is not produced, endorsed, or supported by Nintendo. As a result, Wii Miidia, like all Wii homebrew applications, requires a modchip or a software modification method including the Twilight hack and Bannerbomb exploit to run. Wii Miidia is licensed under the GPL.
