Layangan Putus (transl. Broken Kite) is an Indonesian drama television series directed by Benni Setiawan and produced by Manoj Punjabi of MD Entertainment. The screenplay is written by Oka Aurora and is based on the 2020 semifictional novel of the same name by Eca Prasetyawati, also known as Mommy ASF. The story concerns a man named Aris (portrayed by Reza Rahadian) who has a wife named Kinan (portrayed by Putri Marino) but is having an affair with another woman (portrayed by Anya Geraldine), as well as his family's fall into dysfunction.
Prasetyawati based her novel from a now-deleted popular rant she posted on Facebook in 2019. Filming occurred in early 2021, with strict health and safety protocols as it occurred amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While the cast members did their own research, Setiawan did not read the Layangan Putus novel, deciding it would not help with his directing. Those involved in the making of the film said it was a fun process, though the sexual scenes saw less crew members involved, and coverings were used to evoke pseudorealism, aided by camera angling.
The first two episodes of Layangan Putus aired at the streaming service WeTV on November 26, 2021. The remaining episodes soon follow, with WeTV Fast Track subscribers getting earlier access, and the VIP subscribers following suit. It later aired in Iflix. The series received universal acclaim from critics, who mainly praised the cast, writing, and emotional weight. It became popular worldwide and gained a cult following in Indonesia, evident in various Internet posts and parodies of a scene in the episode "EP06B" where Aris and Kinan fight.
Premise[edit]
Layangan Putus (transl. Broken Kite) follows Aris, a businessman wed to former doctor Kinan. They have a daughter named Raya, and Kinan is pregnant of a second child. However, it is soon revealed that Aris has an affair with another woman. As Kinan goes on the quest in search of the woman, her physiological and mental state worsens, marking the start of the family's descent to dysfunction as Aris proves to care more about the other woman rather than his household.

In 2021 Jakarta, Kinan is happily wed to Aris. They met at the hospital Kinan works at, after a displeased colleague punches Aris. She tells him one night that she wishes to go to Cappadocia, Turkey with him to fly a hot-air-balloon. They have a daughter named Raya, and several years later, Kinan is pregnant again with a boy she names Reno. Brandon moves to another school. Miranda tells Kinan that her divorce with Eros is in progress, and that she is selling her company; the two become friends. To prove that she and Kinan are equally loved, Aris takes Lydia to Capadoccia. Aris leaves a note to Kinan reading: "I have to go. I love you", leaving his location ambiguous to everyone, causing Kinan to suffer another onset of hypertension. Kinan vents about everything, also noting that Aris had most likely begun his affair since her pregnancy. Lola reveals that she discovered Aris had embarked on an international flight, and per the manifest, Aris sat next to Lydia. When Aris returns home, Kinan savagely presents evidences she gathered regarding his affair, causing Aris to fail in forging the intent of his trip. Kinan quickly falls into a state of numb depression over the death of Reno. Her mother Farida, who despises Aris, comforts her and assures that grief is temporary. In a spur of anger after the argument, Aris makes out with Lidya and Kinan ruins Reno's room, against her intent to preserve it, and she blames herself as selfish. Lydia comforts the helpless Aris. When Lola comforts her, Kinan says she is overwhelmed by her marriage's collapse. Lola tearfully tells her to let go of Reno so that she can be happy for the people who genuinely care for her, most notably Raya. After Kinan goes home soaked after visiting Reno's grave, Aris apologizes for her depression and tells her "Don't do this to me"; he tries to make it up to her by making out, but it only lasted a minute. The next day, Kinan downloads Telegram, forges as Aris, and sets up a dinner between Aris and Lidya. | ||||||

Kinan backs off from killing Lidya and uses the knife to peel an apple for her. Kinan decides to treat Lidya kinder, saying with great reluctance she is ready to sacrifice her feelings for Lidya and Aris' by divorce. However, she warns Lidya that Aris is a non-monogamous man; Lidya says she is firm on their marriage nevertheless. The next day, Aris learns that Kinan is filing a lawsuit against him, this time bringing more robust photographic evidences; Kinan also reveals she knows Aris had sex with Lidya in her room. Kinan wins the lawsuit, and custody of Raya is fully handed towards her. She then gives her wedding ring back to Aris. Background[edit]
Drh.[s] Eka Nur Prasetyawati, known under her pen name Mommy ASF, is a veterinary surgeon who went to Udayana University to study veterinary medicine, and learned journalism upon writing for the university's magazine, Suara Satwa (transl. Voices of the Wild). She practiced her writing through blog and social media posts.[1][2] After graduating, she married a man named Rizky Zainal and they have four children, living in Malang. However one day, Zainal had an affair with another woman, and they later divorce. She began struggling financially due to lack of a job experience, but this was relieved after creating an animal shelter named Luna Pethouse.[3]
One day, Prasetyawati had an epiphany that writing can be cathartic for her, and published a series of stories in 2019 titled Layangan Putus at a Facebook forum named Komunitas Bisa Menulis (transl. Community of Good Writers), with a friend copyediting. The story is based upon her real life, telling the story of a mother who has to nurture her four children while facing her husband's affair with another woman. After publishing the fourth entry in the series, Layangan Putus became viral to her shock, and she deleted the entire story, although screenshots have been spread all over the Internet. Later, she had an idea of expanding the story into a novel of the same name, published in 2020 by RDM Publisher.
Pre-production[edit]
One day, production company MD Entertainment took an interest on the novel due to its realism and richness in morals, and commissioned screenwriter Oka Aurora to adapt it into a television series. Aurora holds the notion "A story chooses its writer" for this project. After reading, she noted various important plot points and themes, and combined them together to create a thematic adaptation, in lieu of a page-to-page adaptation. Artistic license was further used by adding more characters and scenes to create a dramatic effect. Talk shows about affairs were also analyzed. Writing was a challenge for Aurora as she was still writing amid the filming of the last four episodes. She collaborated with the creative team of MD Entertainment. Upon producer Manoj Punjabi's suggestion, Kinan was written as a strong and analytical character; so does her friends. Another challenge in writing the screenplay is creating new conflicts in every episode. Director Benni Setiawan gave various inputs and commented on plot holes.[4][5] It took approximately six months for Aurora to make Prasetyawati approve of the screenplay. Aurora speculates that she did not approve of it out of concern that it was too emotional for audiences to handle. Because of this, Aurora worked with the MD Entertainment team more than with Prasetyawati.[4]
Punjabi said that he chose Marino to portray Kinan due to her experience and analogous charisma.[6] She rejected the offer of having her husband, actor Chicco Jerikho, due to nervousness concerns.[7] When Rahadian was asked to portray Aris, he expressed surprise, learning that the general public still held interest in affair narratives despite it being cliché. He had always wanted to portray a slick and manipulative character like Aris for a long time, and thus accepted the offer with glee.[8] Geraldine was insecure when offered to portray Lidya as it would be her debut, but decided to accept it. She is also a close friend of Marino in real life, and thus the rival nature of the story made the filming atmosphere ironic.[9] Rahadian opined that Geraldine was a master in her acting, but calls Marino "brilliant" due to her emotional intensity. He deemed both actors destined for the role, finding it impossible for other actors to portray the characters.[7]
The series was publicly announced by Setiawan on 5 April, 2021, on the first post of its official Instagram account, @layanganputus.md.[10] The post consists of a photo featuring Setiawan, Punjabi, and the main cast.[11] On 10 April, a press conference was held, which ended with a tumpeng slametan. In the conference, hopes were expressed for the series to make audiences "cling onto the edge of their seats" thanks to cliffhangers, and to make the series marketable internationally.[6]

Geraldine. repeatedly asked for permit from her boyfriend Nadif Zaharuddin whenever she would act in a sexual scene, despite Zaharuddin being fine with it.
Release[edit]
During the April press conference, Layangan Putus was confirmed to be released on the streaming service WeTV as a WeTV Original Series. The 3-minute official trailer was released on 18 November, 2021 at MD Entertainment's YouTube channel. Other marketing efforts include advertisements, quoting audience reviews, trailers for individual upcoming episodes, and lighthearted videos discussing the series. WeTV also released making-of videos and live streams, while MD Music released a podcast by Mandagie titled Bicara Rasa (transl. Vent the Heart Out) where she voices as a heartbroken wife.
On 26 November, "EP01A" and "EP01B" was released, with WeTV VIP subscribers getting further access to "EP02A" and "EP02B". "EP01A" and "EP01B" was later released for free on 28 November at MD Entertainment's YouTube channel. After that, Layangan Putus follows a release schedule of every Friday and Sunday at 18:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). On 29 December, 2021, a post on @layanganputus.md asked fans if they want the series to include Fast Track, a paywalled feature exclusive to VIP subscribers that allow for much earlier access. Fans agreed, and WeTV respectively implemented Fast Track on "EP10A" and "EP10B" on 17 and 18 January, 2022. Layangan Putus finished on 22 January for VIP subscribers, and on 29 January for non-subscribers (dubbed "Free").
The series was also released in Iflix during its opening day, in a integration website called WeTV Iflix.[12] On 22 January, 2022, a Facebook user named Joper Art released a poster for its airing in the television network RCTI claimed to be from its marketing team; the poster promotes Layangan Putus as a special, with the tagline "The Beauty of Rivalries".[13] On 27 January 2022, this is officially confirmed by RCTI: the series will air starting 8 February, 2022 every 18:00 WIB to coincide Valentine's Day, taking over the slot for an RCTI series, Princess for a Prince (Putri untuk Pangeran).[14]
