Libre (Free) is a 2001 salsa album by Marc Anthony. It was nominated for the 2002 Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album and was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Salsa Album. This album became his third chart-topper in the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, spending 14 weeks at number-one.

Background and recording

[edit]

In 1999, Marc Anthony released his self-titled English-language album which brought attention from the mainstream media and was certified triple platinum in the United States.[1] The following year after its release, Anthony announced that he would simultaneously release a salsa album and another English-language record in 2001.[2] For the salsa album, Anthony took eight months to record it as he noted that he had complete control of his artistic liberty and time to complete the project; as a result, he named the album Libre to emphasize on his feeling of freedom.[1] Anthony arranged and mixed the album himself and co-produced it with Juanito Gonzalez.[1]

Musical style and themes

[edit]

Libre is a salsa album with influences of musics from Africa, Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru.[3] Lyrically, the songs deal with "impossible love, longing and heroic declaration".[4] The opening track "Celos" involves the protagonist being "overwrought" with jealousy.[4] On "Viviendo", the singer tells his ex-lover to "live without fear or excuses".
