Myers Park is an affluent neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina. Though its boundaries were initially considered to coincide with the boundaries of the 1,220-acre (4.9 km2) John Spring Myers farm, in 2008 the neighborhood comprised 2,200 acres (8.9 km2) and a population of 9,809. The Myers Park neighborhood is that area bounded by Queens Road on the north; Providence Road on the east; Sharon Road on the south; and Colony, East Woodlawn and South Kings on the west.[1]

Myers Park is bordered on the north by the lesser known Cherry Community, with whom it shares a rather interesting, and controversial past.[2] [3] To the west lies Dilworth, to the east lies Elizabeth and to the south is South Park.

History[edit]

George Stephens developed a plan for a streetcar suburb on his father-in-law's (John Spring Myers) farm in 1905. The neighborhood was designed by the Harvard-trained landscape architect, John Nolen, and work was underway by 1911.[4] Historical landmarks within Myers Park include the Duke Mansion and The Manor Theater. The Duke Mansion, formerly known as White Oaks, was built around 1915 and made famous by former owner James Buchanan Duke. On the National Register of Historic Places, the mansion is now owned by a non-profit organization. It operates as a bed and breakfast but can also be booked for private functions such as corporate conferences and weddings. [5]

Demographics[edit]

Of the 9,809 people living in Myers Park in 2008, 2,249 are under 18 years of age; approx. 1,511 are over 64 years of age.[1] There are 4,643 housing units in Myers Park.[1] The median household income in $109,772.[1] The average house value in Myers Park is $778,762.[1]

Education[edit]

Queens University of Charlotte[edit]

The Queens University of Charlotte campus is located in Myers Park on Selwyn Avenue. The university was founded in 1857 as a liberal arts college for women by the Presbyterian Church, USA. In 1979 the school began admitting males and today has approximately 2,700 coed students enrolled in its undergraduate and graduate programs.[6]

Primary and secondary education[edit]

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools operates area public schools.[7]

Public Libraries[edit]

Myers Park is served by the Myers Park branch of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.[8] The library is located at the corner of Queens Road and Providence Road.
