- ^ The Princess Jianning featured in the novel is a fictional character. The real Princess Jianning is actually the sister of the Shunzhi Emperor and aunt of the Kangxi Emperor. In the story, Jianning has no biological relations with Kangxi as she gets her "princess" title because she is the daughter of the fake empress dowager.
- ^ According to official historical records, Shunzhi died in 1661 of smallpox. In the novel, however, Shunzhi abdicated upon the death of his favourite concubine and becomes a monk on Mount Wutai by the name of "Xingchi". This may be taken from rumours of Shunzhi's reported death in folktales.
