Vetusta Morla

For the fictional city in the novel La Regenta

Vetusta Morla is a Spanish indie rock band founded in Tres Cantos, Madrid (Spain), which sings in Spanish. After nine years of musical trajectory, in February of 2008 they published their first long album called Un día en el mundo which was warmly welcomed by the public as well as by the specialised critics. Three years later, in 2011, they published their second album, Mapas. On the 8th of April 2014, they published their third album called La deriva after some years on tour in Spain and other countries. The band is called after the character Morla of The Neverending Story, the huge old turtle, due to the fact that “vetusta” means old, aged.

History

Vetusta Morla was formed in the summer of 1998. Their story began at José Luis Sampedro high school in the town Tres Cantos, Madrid.

The first members of Vetusta Morla were Pucho (Juan Pedro Martín, voice), David García “el indio” (drums), Jorge González (percussion), Alejandro Notario (bass guitar), and Guillermo Galván (guitar). Later on, at the end of 1998, Juan Manuel Latorre joined the band as guitarist and keyboard player and Alejandro Notario left the band. The sextet line-up was finally completed with Álvaro B. Baglietto.

The band is called after the old turtle of the youth novel The Neverending Novel by Michael Ende. Vetusta Morla is a turtle that decided to believe the just thing not to become anything.

They recorded their first demo, 13 horas con Lucy, in 2000. In March of the same year they won the second place in the Hortaleza Musica Competition and the first place in the Rivas-Vaclamadrid Pop-Rock State Award. Some months later, in January 2001, the opportunity of recording a second demo came up, which would be called Vetusta Morla after the band.

After making its way to finals of La Elipa Rock Competition in 2001, the band met the producer David Hyam. With him, they started to shape up a new work: "La cuadratura del círculo".

When their third demo was recorded, Alejandro Notario left the band. Soon after, Álvaro B. Baglietto became the new bass player.

In 2004, they played in the RTVE show Los Conciertos de Radio 3. Moreover, they participated as well in the Anti-Crise International Festival (Beirut), where they represented Spain. It was an event that gathered several artists from different countries. They had the chance to play with all the other invited musicians as well as living with them for a few days in an Ottoman house transformed into a cultural centre and residence for artists, which is called Zico House.

In January of 2005, they published Mira, a self published EP with 7 songs.

Along all this time, Vetusta Morla never stopped playing in concert halls from all over Spain. The tour in Madrid was specially important: El Sol, La Palma, Galileo Galilei, Caracol, Macumba, Clamores, Heineken, La Boca del Lobo, Ritmo & Compa´s, Chesterfield Café, Joy Eslava, etc.

First Album and consolidation as a band

In February of 2008, they edited their first long album, Un día en el mundo, which has been described as “the best album of a band in the history of Spanish rock” by the musical journalist Santiago Alcanda.

On the 18th of February of the same year, they played again at Los conciertos de Radio 3(The concerts or Radio 3) to present their first LP. In January of 2011, the band confirmed on Twitter they were working on a new disc, which would be edited in the middle of 2011.

On the 11th of April 2011, the band uploaded to their official website their first song called "En el río", the top of their second disc, Mapas. The album was launched through their official website on the 3rd of May the same year before it was displayed in the market on the 6th of May 2011.

On the 3rd of December, "Pequeño salto mortal", the original soundtrack of the video game together with Delirium Studios "Los ríos de Alice" came to light with his own record label. This is a work of 14 songs which includes the song ‘’Los buenos’’, already performed live by the band.

At the end of 2013 the band reported by the social networks that they were preparing their third LP, La deriva. They launched the first single, ‘’Golpe Maestro’’ to present their new LP on the 23rd of February 2014. One month later, on the 25th of March, the second single they chose was the one with the same name as the CD, "La deriva". On the 8th of April 2014 this new album went on sale and the band presented it in at a live concert in the studios of Radio 3, RNE (National Radio of Spain). The first music video of the CD was also presented, corresponding to the song ‘’La deriva’’.

They perform in several alternative music festivals such as Bilbao BBK Live ―to which they have already come three times― Low Festival, Dcode, Santander Music and PortAmérica Rías Baixas among others.

In addition, the members of Vetusta Morla collaborate on different musical projects: David García “el Indio” takes part in SpeakLOW and Quartetoscopio, as well as in several projects, included Depedro, of Jairo Zavala. He has played with flamenco artists, with Amparanoia, and with Muchachito Bombo Infierno. Jorge is member of a fusion band called CaLoCanDo, and Juanma is member of a funk/hip-hop band called Funkin Donuts.

July 2008

thumb|250px|Juan Manuel Latorre, keyboard player and guitar player. "Copenhague", the fourth song of "Un día en el mundo", was chosen as one of the three best Spanish indie songs in 30 years. The voting was carried out between the Internet users and the listeners of Radio 3, in an "essential" songs competition put into operation by the Unión Fonográfica Independiente and Radio 3. The goal of this voting was to celebrate the 4th of July as Día de la Música Independiente (Independent Music Day). "Copenhague" was the third classified. The winner was "Qué nos va a pasar" from La Buena Vida, and the second one was "La revolución sexual" from La Casa Azul.

September 2008

The music videos "Un día en el mundo" and "Otro día en el mundo", both directed by Álvaro León, obtained jointly the Mención Especial a la Creatividad (category created specially for that occasion and that rewards creativity) in the I Alcañiz National Music Video Festival (Teruel). The competition was addressed to producers, music video producers, and Spanish record companies. A total of 163 works were submitted. The awards were given on last weekend of September.

October 2008

The 15th of October 2008, Vetusta Morla won the Best Pop Live Award, in the Gala of the second edition of the La Noche en Vivo Awards, known as "Los Guilles". This prize rewards the live music and is given by the association with the same name, which is the owner of 45 concert halls in Madrid. Vetusta Morla was nominated for three categories: Breakout Artist, Best Rock Live and Best Pop Live. The 21st of October 2008, Vetusta Morla received the Ojo Crítico Award in the category of Modern Music. It is one of the most significant cultural awards in Spain. These awards were created nineteen years ago by the National Radio of Spain cultural program El Ojo Crítico, whose 25th anniversary was in 2008. The verdict maintains their strenght on the stage and their personal sound.

December 2008

thumb|200px|Guillermo Galván, guitar player. By the end of this year, the band was chosen as Breakout Artist of 2008, through the voting organized by the EP3 readers, on its section in the Spanish newspaper El País website.

The first Vetusta Morla’s album, Un día en el mundo, had the second place on MTV ranking in 2008. On the Rockzone magazine review to the best of the year, Un día en el mundo was classified as the second best national album, while Mondosonoro classified it as the third one, with the song Un día en el mundo as the best national song.

In the view of Heineken.es "Un día en el mundo" was considered the third best national song of 2008, the album was considered too the sixth Best National Album.

January 2009

At the beginning of 2009, Vetusta Morla obtained the Tras la 2 award on the Best Musical Design category. They won that prize with a 58% of the internet users’ votes. This is an award given, for the third consecutive year, by the Spanish TV program Miradas 2 (that belongs to the television network La 2 of TVE). Miradas 2 rewards the best works of 2008.

February 2009

On the 26th of February 2009, the band born in Madrid was proclaimed as the big winner of the 13th edition of the Music Awards, given by the Arts and Music Science Academy every year. Vetusta Morla won three awards: Breakout Songwriter (with their song “Copenhague”), Breakout Artist (because of "Un día en el mundo" shared with Pitingo and his “Soulería”) and Best Alternative Pop Album (Un día en el mundo).

April 2009

"Otro día en el mundo" was a music video made by Álvaro León and the Keloide team for Vetusta Morla. That music video was a shooting experiment in real time. It won the Best Music Video Award in the Cinema Week from Medina del Campo. It is a prestigious competition that celebrated its 22th edition in 2009.

July 2009

The band from Madrid was involved in the first edition of the Premios de la Música Independiente (Independent Music Awards), that are handed over by UFI (Independent Phonographic Union). In those awards, Vetusta Morla received four prizes: Best Artist, Best Album for Un día en el mundo, Best Rock Album and Best Song because for Valiente.

September 2009

On the fourth edition of the Premios de la Música y la Creación Independiente Pop-Eye (Music and Independent Creation Pop-Eye Awards), Vetusta Morla won the Best Spanish Group Award.

January 2010

Un día en el mundo was chosen as the Best National Album of the Decade by the Spanish magazine Indierock. That magazine placed Vetusta Morla in the first place on the Breakout Group Category. Indierock placed them in the third place regarding the Best National Live of the Decade.

November 2011

The band won the Best Group of the Year and Best Record of the Year awards according to the magazine Rolling Stone because of their second LP, Mapas.

November 2012

Vetusta Morla was rewarded by the magazine Rolling Stone with the Best Tour of the Year Award. In that tour, the group carried out a total of 107 concerts, 6 with the Región of Murcia’s Symphony Orchestra and 28 aboard.

Acts of Solidarity

On the 31st of May and the 1st of June 2012, this band joins the Región de Murcia's Symphony Orchestra, each band performed separately in Víctor Villegas auditorium in Murcia, with the aim to raise funds for the restoration of the Narciso Yepes National Conservatory of Lorca and to make people aware of the situation which continued being the same one year after the seism that took place in Lorca in 2011, with a city still in ruins. More than thirteen music adapters worked to prepare songs for the albums Un día en el Mundo y Mapas. That way, they gathered rock and classic public for a good cause. Recently they have published on his official website the possibility of download officially this concert, which can also be watched on YouTube.
