A number of the 50 largest U.S. cities, as well as numerous smaller cities and towns, have held or will hold mayoral elections in 2023.
Races already held
[edit]- Tampa, Florida: On March 7, one-term incumbent Jane Castor won re-election unopposed.[1]
- Chicago, Illinois: On April 4, Brandon Johnson defeated Paul Vallas in a runoff election, succeeding one-term incumbent Lori Lightfoot, who did not advance to the runoff and therefore lost re-election.[2]
- Green Bay, Wisconsin: On April 4, one-term incumbent Eric Genrich won re-election against Chad Weininger.[3]
- Madison, Wisconsin: On April 4, one-term incumbent Satya Rhodes-Conway won re-election against Gloria Reyes.[4]
- Springfield, Illinois: On April 4, Misty Buscher narrowly defeated two-term incumbent Jim Langfelder in his bid for re-election.[5]
- Lincoln, Nebraska: On May 2, one-term incumbent Leirion Gaylor Baird won re-election against Suzanne Geist.[6]
- Arlington, Texas: On May 6, one-term incumbent Jim Ross narrowly won re-election against Amy Cearnal.[7]
- Dallas, Texas: On May 6, one-term incumbent Eric Johnson won re-election unopposed.[8]
- Fort Worth, Texas: On May 6, one-term incumbent Mattie Parker won re-election against Jennifer Castillo, Kenneth Bowens Jr., and Alyson Kennedy.[9]
- San Antonio, Texas: On May 6, three-term incumbent Ron Nirenberg won re-election against Christopher Schuchardt.[10]
- Denver, Colorado: On June 6, Mike Johnston defeated Kelly Brough in a runoff election, succeeding three-term incumbent Michael Hancock, who was term-limited.[11]
- Montgomery, Alabama: On August 22, one-term incumbent Steven Reed won re-election against Barrett Gilbreath.[12]
- Nashville, Tennessee: On September 14, Freddie O'Connell defeated Alice Rolli in a runoff election, succeeding one-term incumbent John Cooper, who chose to retire.[13]
- Memphis, Tennessee: On October 5, Paul Young defeated Floyd Bonner, W. W. Herenton, and Van Turner, succeeding two-term incumbent Jim Strickland, who was term-limited.[14]
- Akron, Ohio: On November 7, Shammas Malik won unopposed, succeeding two-term incumbent Dan Horrigan who chose not to seek re-election.[15]
- Aurora, Colorado: On November 7, incumbent Mike Coffman won re-election against Juan Marcano and Jeffrey Sanford.[16]
- Boise, Idaho: On November 7, incumbent Lauren McLean won re-election against Mike Materson.[17]
- Bridgeport, Connecticut: Two-term incumbent Joseph Ganim ran for re-election,[18] facing David Herz, John Gomes, and Lamond Daniels. The election was held on November 7, 2023. Ganim won, but the race remains undecided amid lawsuits surrounding an absentee ballot scandal.[19]
- Carmel, Indiana: On November 7, Sue Finkam defeated Miles Nelson,[20] succeededing seven-term incumbent James Brainard, who retired.[21]
- Charlotte, North Carolina: On November 7, three-term incumbent Vi Lyles won re-election, defeating Misun Kim.[22]
- Columbus, Ohio: On November 7, two-term incumbent Andrew Ginther won re-election, defeating Joe Motil.[23]
- Des Moines, Iowa: On November 7, Connie Boesen defeated Josh Mandelbaum,[24] succeeding five-term incumbent Frank Cownie, who retired.[25]
- Durham, North Carolina: On November 7, Leonardo Williams defeated Mike Woodard,[26] succeeding one-term incumbent Elaine O'Neal, who retired.[27]
- Fort Wayne, Indiana: On November 7, four-term incumbent Tom Henry won re-election, narrowly defeating Tom Didier.[28]
- Gary, Indiana: On November 7, Eddie Melton defeated Andrew Delano,[29] succeeding one-term incumbent Jerome Prince, who lost renomination to Melton in the Democratic primary.[30]
- Greenville, South Carolina: On November 7, seven-term incumbent Knox White won re-election, defeating Michelle Shain.[31]
- Hartford, Connecticut: On November 7, Arunan Arulampalam defeated five candidates and four write-ins,[32] succeeding two-term incumbent Luke Bronin, who retired.[33]
- Indianapolis, Indiana: On November 7, two-term incumbent Joe Hogsett won re-election, defeating Jefferson Shreve.[34]
- Knoxville, Tennessee: On November 7, one-term incumbent Indya Kincannon won re-election, defeating Jeff Talman, Constance Every, and R.C. Lawthorn.[35]
- Orlando, Florida: On November 7, five-term incumbent Buddy Dyer won re-election, defeating Steve Dixon, Samuel Ings, and Tony Vargas.[36]
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: On November 7, Cherelle Parker defeated David Oh, succeeding two-term incumbent Jim Kenney who was term limited.[37][38]
- Savannah, Georgia: On November 7, one-term incumbent Van R. Johnson won re-election, defeating Kesha Gibson Carter and Tyrisha Davis.[39]
- South Bend, Indiana: On November 7, one-term incumbent James Mueller won re-election, defeating Desmont Upchurch.[40]
- Springfield, Massachusetts: On November 7, five-term incumbent Domenic Sarno won re-election, defeating Justin Hurst.[41]
- Tucson, Arizona: On November 7, one-term incumbent Regina Romero won re-election, defeating Janet Wittenbraker.[42]
- Worcester, Massachusetts: On November 7, six-term incumbent Joesph Petty won re-election, defeating Khrystian King, Donna Colorio, Bill Coleman, and Guillermo Creamer, Jr.[43]

[edit]- Colorado Springs, Colorado: On May 16, Yemi Mobolade defeated Wayne W. Williams in a runoff election, succeeding two-term incumbent John Suthers, who was term-limited.[44] Independent gain from Republican. (officially nonpartisan)
- Jacksonville, Florida: On May 16, Donna Deegan defeated Daniel Davis in a runoff election, succeeding two-term incumbent Lenny Curry, who was term-limited.[45][46] Democratic gain from Republican
- Danbury, Connecticut: On November 7, Roberto Alves defeated one-term incumbent Dean Esposito.[47] Democratic gain from Republican
- Evansville, Indiana: On November 7, Stephanie Terry defeated Natalie Rascher and Michael Daugherty,[48] succeeding three-term incumbent Lloyd Winnecke, who retired.[49] Democratic gain from Republican
- Manchester, New Hampshire: On November 7, Jay Ruais defeated Kevin Cavanaugh,[50] succeeding three-term incumbent Joyce Craig, who retired to run for governor in 2024.[51][52] Republican gain from Democratic (officially nonpartisan)
- Spokane, Washington: On November 7, Lisa Brown defeated one-term incumbent Nadine Woodward.[53] Democratic gain from Republican (officially nonpartisan)
- Terre Haute, Indiana: On November 7, Brandon Sakbun defeated four-term incumbent Duke Bennett.[54] Democratic gain from Republican
- Wichita, Kansas: On November 7, Lily Wu defeated one-term incumbent Brandon Whipple.[55] Libertarian gain from Democratic (officially nonpartisan)

[edit]- Charleston, South Carolina: Two-term incumbent John Tecklenburg is running for re-election.[56] The first round was held November 7, 2023. Tecklenburg and William Cogswell advanced to a runoff, defeating Clay Middleton, Peter Shahid, Mika Gadsden and Debra Gammons. The runoff will be held November 21.[57]
- Pueblo, Colorado: One-term incumbent Nick Gradisar is running for re-election.[58] The first round was held November 7, 2023. Grandisar and Heather Graham advanced to a runoff, defeating Chris Nicoll, Randy Thurston, Dennis Flores, Regina Maestri, and Larry Atencio.[59] The runoff will be held January 23, 2024.[60]
- Salt Lake City, Utah: One-term incumbent Erin Mendenhall is running for re-election.[61]
Ineligible or retiring incumbents
[edit]- Houston, Texas: Two-term incumbent Sylvester Turner is ineligible to run for re-election due to term limits. The first round was held November 7, 2023. John Whitmire and Sheila Jackson Lee advanced to a runoff, defeating 15 candidates. The runoff will be held December 9.[62]
