Sarmals (sometimes Sadmal or Surmal) are Dogra-Pahari Rajputs belonging to the Suryavanshi Rajputs Lineage, having their estate in the Shivalik Hills of the Jammu and Kashmir.

Etymology[edit]

The term Sarmal is thought to derive from Sauram/Sodam, the name of a hill in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. Kalhana's Rajatarangini makes mention of this clan as Thakurs who ruled the valley and many prominent hills of Kashmir region & Jammu Province.[1] Sarmal seems to have relationship with them.

The family of Rajputs (Thakurs) who had autonomy over sauram hills is referred to as Sarmal (or Sadmal). The members of the family however are the descent of a legendary Suryavanshi (solar) dynasty, in which Shree Ram took birth.[2]They are also known as Pahari Raje.

Demographics[edit]

They were active warriors and as landlord they also owned the lands, too farmed upon them. Majority of the them are concentrated in the Samba District of Indian - administered Jammu & Kashmir. Also some population resides in jammu, kathua, Doda, Katra , bhaderwah and in nearby states like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
