Ok, your edit intrigued me, so I did some more digging. The Pascal-B nuclear test is thought to have accelerated a steel cap to escape velocity, so theoretically the object could have been launched into space. But even if that is so, your edit was still unnecessary for a number of reasons: (1) there was no reason to remove the rest of the article's content, (2) scientists disagree whether the cap would have been vaporized by its high velocity before reaching space, and (3) the article explains that some military rockets reached suborbital space before Sputnik, so nowhere does the article claim that Sputnik was the first man-made object in space. Instead, Sputnik was the first satellite to orbit Earth. Nonetheless, I found your factoid interesting. Best, Altamel (talk) 18:42, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
