Thanks for the tip but whenever I see anything computer programming related I clam up and try to avoid it. If somebody could do something for me and set up a system where I can generate tons of these african articles this would be a lot easier for me ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:26, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I want to create several thousand articles on places in Africa, Latin America and Asia -countries which have very poor coverage at present. It is very important though to add an infobox and connect to other settlements -see articles like Gbokopeteme, Mogolo etc . Idon't know if there is anything you can do for that ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:30, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to draw up lists of missing towns and villages by country see this. When they are drawn up they will be work pages of thousands of missing red links. Perhaps you could think of some way to help using AWB? E.g Azerbaijan I've started a list ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:32, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't forgotten about the French communes, in fact check out the first ten Communes of Yvelines -I added infoboxes and images the other night and will be continuing to do so ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:35, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm the thing is I don't really like creating stubs without a locator and infobox and some information. France was the exception because of the sheer content that was missing and it was easier to do that ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:38, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers, I wish I had more time to concentrate on France solely but I think globally and see the encyclopedia in terms of balance, in time and space, and geographically the world would have tipped over by now because it is so unbalanced!! I think its very important to begin trying to fill in the missing pieces. Over time it will be a great achievement I think. Saludos! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:44, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Andorra

[edit]

Hi friend before you go any further can you change it to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Andorra -I'll recategorize now ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:47, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You may find this useful - The best thing I have found to date is Global gazetteer. It lists places A-Z through an A-Z of all countries in the world. The information on population should be ignored though as it is an estimate but actual location, and elevation is reliable as it is based on satellite data. There is an entire directory of towns and villages so you may feel like adding some stubs from any of the lists. The more you look through them the more you realise the low percentage of places covered at present. I'll also look into getting a pin point map for Andorra ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:00, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You beat me to it!! Check out nearly every town in Gambia now. Inofboxes and images!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:33, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well thankyou. It makes such a difference if the commons is actually half resourceful unlike most of the places in africa/central asia and latin america. I got quite a nice surprise when I checked out Gambia in the commons ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:40, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See Abu Sudayrah. Maps a bit big but I'll see if I can reduce the size ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:33, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you word it as village rather than settlement? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know you are creating them to open up a new stub category when it hits 60 but I;ve created a Template:Location map Aruba so any place on the island can have a map like Angochi. I've added a map to about 10 of the Qatar ones already So much to do!!

And next...

Djibouti articles

[edit]

I will stop tagging these pages. To me, it seems like there is almost no information other than where it is. For me, it was not a question of importance/notability, but a question of context. Maybe someone more well-versed in WP:CSD can answer this a little better. It looks like you've been doing great work though! -anabus_maximus (Talk to me) 03:14, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stop creating airport articles.... all stubs, need more information. --staka (TC) 03:35, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just ignore this crap. I've sorted out all of the Djibouti cities thanks - I created the location map too to accomplish this. But it would be really more useful if you could at least add the map box and one outside link to fend off sniffers and to save me time going through them later. Remember we had permission with France to stub without references which I generally would never recommend. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:14, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know and even then I appreciate these stubs but it really would make a major difference if you just copied and pasted the infobox and link on everyone and entered in the coordinates -it is terribly easy and takes an extra 30 seconds maximum. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:26, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone crazy today. I've restructured ever place in ethiopia by region check out Category:Cities, towns and villages in Ethiopia. I've also recategorized comoros, cape verde and am now doing benin -plus I've added infoboxes to all Liberian cities!!! Phew! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:17, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Cities, towns and villages in the Oromia Region ??? 85 is quite a lot I think. Ther eis one or two with hardly any at all though its that unbalanced. Might be agood thing to note the regions with few settlements in and aim at evenin it up a bit. 20:23, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Well that just sums up how uneven the coverage is in general doesn't it -even within countries. Ethiopia though I have to say is one of the most if not the most developed country for settlements in africa on wikipedia at present excluding south africa perhaps. If we could get all of the african countries up to a minimum level with half decent articles like we have for ethiopia it would come on leaps and bounds. I remain optimistic though if a lot can be written for every place in ethiopia then there should eventually be info on everywhere . ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:30, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I remember it too, and you'd never think articles on ethiopian municipalities/communes would develop so well would you? Ethiopia is definately the most consistent country in africa for places now thanks to this editor who has a welsh sounding name something like Lllwych. I thanked him earlier as it is a very positive step to the thinking it might be possible to achieve something all over africa and all of the world. Imagine what could happen if we could get 50 editors similarly minded working on each of these countries ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:38, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Albert - I notice a few new stubs on Antarctica cropping up - good work :) Thought you should know that there are now two different stub templates used for places in the far south - {{Antarctica-geo-stub}} is still used for places on the continent itself (or attached to it by ice sheets), but for places like Indian Rocks it's now better to use {{Subantarctic-geo-stub}}. African cities

[edit]

When you have done Antarctica and I have recategorized the African article I have a proposition. I am thinking of doing a scheme where every country has to have 200 articles on a settlement minimum. I don't mind if they are stubbed with an infobox which is empty. We could do it in the same way as France and then just add more details afterwards. This way I estimate we could get 10,000 articles on places in Africa onto wikipedia relatively quickly . But if they are started they would have to be done so an infobox is added ready for filling in later ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:42, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Albrecht Penck Glacier

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Albrecht Penck Glacier requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Some advice about Antarctic features from USGS and avoiding copyvio notices

[edit]

Adding a cited reference like I've done for Akademik Federov Canyon should help keep the stubs you've submitted from getting tagged and nominated for a speed deletion. Be sure to use the USGS approved url at [1] which is (for Antarctica) http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=gnispq:5:::NO::P5_ANTAR_ID:nnnnnnn (replace nnnnnnn with the "Antarctica ID:" on the detail page). If you have any questions, let me know. – Zedla (talk) 07:59, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Réunion

[edit]

Hi. Could I please ask you to source, or at least let me know your source for, the articles in Category:Cities, towns and villages in Réunion? I've been informed by a trusted fr.wiki editor, born and raised on the island, that all but 8 (Dimitile, Domenjod, Grande Chaloupe, Ligne des Bambous, Manapany, Piton Sainte-Rose, Quartier-Français and Vincendo) of those villages are actually so small and so obscure as to lack encyclopedic value and should consequently be deleted. Putting AfD/prod tags on 33 articles would be lots of work, so I'd like to know what I'm getting into, and source/notability information would be a good start. Thank you. Biruitorul (talk) 03:43, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see a slight problem with the source: the population figures. Réunion has under a million inhabitants, but adding up all the numbers would give many millions. Plus, the notability of villages (which have no administrative function) is itself questionable. For (say) a commune, it's enough, at least for now, to say "X is a commune on Réunion" and assume notability. But with villages the matter becomes rather more problematic: whatever there is to say about them could easily be said in the commune article (something like "Commune X is comprised of villages A, B and C").
Ah, and a useful thought experiment: would you call all these places notable, and the population figures accurate? I applied that test to some places I know well and the answer was a decided no in both cases. Biruitorul (talk) 14:53, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let me be clear: I'm not trying to claim that site has no worth - clearly it's run by serious people attempting to compile a list of all the world's localities. The problem is that it's imperfect, and that the presence of an entry there doesn't guarantee Wikipedia notability. I'll try to demonstrate this a little more clearly. I'm not sure which Virginia page you checked, but look at Ri for a moment. We're told that Rio Vista has 125959 people, but I doubt it. We also find that Riverdale Mobile Home Park has 51,581 people. This raises two issues. First, realistically, no trailer park has that many people. Second, no trailer park has a Wikipedia entry, casting doubt on the notion that all fallingrain.com entries are up to our notability standards.
Now I'll take a quick look at what it has on Romania, a place I'm familiar with. I will compare fallingrain figures with 2007 Romanian government estimates. Bucharest: 180,048/1,931,838; Iaşi: 15,289/315,214; Cluj-Napoca: 12,884/310,243; Timişoara: 8,222/307,347; Constanţa: 6,613/304,279. Also, the bulk of the localities listed (sample) are said to be in Covurlui County, an entity that ceased to exist in 1950. It also gives wild overestimates - for instance Borşa-Cătun is said to have 12,846 inhabitants - but that's implausible, since it's just a village, and cătun means "hamlet" in Romanian. (Actually it's impossible - the commune it belongs to, Borşa, has just 1812 inhabitants.)
I hope I've convinced you the site has problems. Now the question becomes what to do with the Réunion articles. My own suggestion would be to try and find out the communes each of these villages (except the 7 that are actually notable) belong to and redirect to the particular commune. Here's why. Every article should in theory be expandable to an FA, but realistically, there's little chance articles on villages of 3-4 families on a faraway island are ever going to be more than "X is a village in southeast Réunion". Any useful content, and really the only useful information is the fact they exist, can easily be merged into the article on the commune.
The same, I'm fairly certain, is also true of Category:Cities, towns and villages in Liechtenstein -- these are tiny mountain settlements amply covered by Category:Municipalities of Liechtenstein and Category:Cities, towns and villages in Aruba -- more island villages when (I'm quite confident) the great majority of Arubans live in one of the cities.
Am I starting to make sense? If so, let me also suggest that in the future, when you create articles on localities, you try to adhere to the principle that only legal subdivisions - preferably sourced with more than fallingrain - give rise to articles. In other words, communes yes, villages no. Of course that's not official policy, so feel free to ignore, but there are good reasons to limit the number of articles on villages (informal units) that will never be expanded. (Naturally, notable villages do exist, but it's best to find evidence of that first before going ahead and creating the article.) Biruitorul (talk) 03:54, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Full reply coming tomorrow. Let me just note that if I assumed you weren't acting in good faith or were being disruptive, I wouldn't have written reams of text to try and persuade you to my position. That should indicate I'm treating you as an equal, and as someone who indeed acted with the best of intentions, but if my tone was "off" at any point, sorry, it's not what I intended in the least. I intend to act cooperatively, and won't initiate anything drastic at least until we've exhausted this discussion (which is proceeding amiably enough, thank goodness). We both aim to improve the project, not to inflate our own egos, so I suspect the final outcome will be auspicious. See you soon. Biruitorul (talk) 05:02, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know what you mean. It's doubly true when you interact with someone you didn't know previously here; this place has lots of nice people but its fair share of rather vicious ones too. See for instance this classy exchange from a couple of days ago (just keep scrolling), where some guy kept telling me that I'd "unmasked" myself and that I'd "basically guaranteed" that I'll never be an admin (not if I write three dozen FAs, not if I make 2 million edits, not if I undo 30,000 instances of vandalism...). So granted, that vote was a little spiteful, but a) I soon struck it, b) it was quite understandable, c) it wouldn't have mattered, given he was bound to win and most importantly d) who cares, or who'll care in 6 months or a year? (Well, one guy will, but hopefully not more.)
Anyway, I'll try to get back to substantive matters tomorrow; sometimes I'm quite thankful for WP:DEADLINE. Biruitorul (talk) 05:37, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pigeon Point

[edit]

The official name of the lighthouse and surrounding complex is "Pigeon Point Light Station". You've changed it back to "Pigeon Point Light", which strikes me as a wrongheaded over-application of Wikipedia convention. The official name of a geographic feature should clearly trump Wikipedia boilerplate. I will probably change the article back to the old name for this reason. Yes indeed the template and lists I have created to generate new content are not considered "notable enough" even though they are nationally famous in Slovenia. Well the thing is many of them are actually intertational performers such as this guy but are not going to be all that globally famous, but will be recognizable in their fields. Most Americans probably haven't heard of Katherine Jenkins but she is very well known in the UK . I think it is the task of wikipedia to try to look at the world from a neutral viewpoint and from a neutral point of study to avoid any hang ups on people because they aren't so prominent in the "english " speaking world. I believe it should convey information from different parts of the world as if you are there and unite it into one. I know there are many who disagree with me, their loss ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:55, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well yes it is beautiful if other people recognize your potential and don't interfere with your work with various afds and disputes. If they just kept away and let you get on with it and did their "work" elsewhere then this site would be a lot better. Speedy deletion of Timothee Adammowski

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Timothee Adammowski requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay.
