Stephen Kelly is CEO of Sage Group plc. He was previously the Chief Operating Officer for the UK Government and has almost 30 years’ experience in the private sector as a CEO, entrepreneur and investor in high growth UK and US based companies.

Early life

Stephen was born in Kent and attended a grammar school in Folkestone.[1] He went on to study Business Administration at the University of Bath between 1980 and 1984.

Career

He began his career at ICL and then moved to Oracle Corporation, shortly after its IPO in 1987, holding various roles including Director of Financial Services, Telcos & Retail and then Director of Europe, Middle East and Africa Alliances and Industry groups.[2]

Chordiant

In 1997, Stephen moved to Chordiant, where he initially led its International Operations, later becoming the company’s President and Chief Operating Officer and finally being appointed Chief Executive Officer, a role he held from 2002 to 2006.[3]

Micro Focus International plc

In 2006, he was appointed the CEO of Micro Focus International[4], and is credited with turning around the company’s fortunes.[5][6]

Her Majesty’s Government (UK)

Stephen was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer for the UK Government in 2012, with the task of improving citizen services and driving efficiency savings.[7] The program, led by Francis Maude Minister for Cabinet Office and Stephen, delivered £20bn savings per annum (2014/15). [8] He was the most senior civil servant leading the UK Government’s Efficiency and Reform team.[9]

Sage Group plc

In August 2014, Stephen announced that he would be taking up the role of CEO at Sage Group plc Ltd on 5 November of that year.[10]

Talkwalker named Stephen as the most social FTSE 100 CEO in January 2015.[11]

On 20 November 2015, he was named as a Business Ambassadors to the UK Government.[12]

Business Insider placed Stephen at number 26 in its list of “51 best people in European finance to follow on Twitter”.[13]

On 21 January 2016, LinkedIn announced Stephen as one of its UK Power Profiles – Most Viewed Technology Professionals on LinkedIn in the UK for 2015.[14]

Entrepreneur and Angel Investor

Stephen was a Board Director in 2007 at Fidelity Ventures, and later for Curam Software which was bought by IBM in 2011. From 2010, Stephen angel invested in Artesian Solutions; Cloudapps[15]; Fairsail; Kimble; Opsview. Stephen acted as a Board Director in the early stages.
