How I saw your picture of the solar tree

[edit]

I saw it in my regular re-search and re-opening of the wikipedia's photovoltaics page.

It's for work reasons and also my beloved obsessions, now focused on the sun, and the devices to capture their energy.

As I am just very lazy and forgetful I didn't want to check up how to properly write links here. Something I knew well some time ago but left my mind after some un-use. Even being a big lover of wikipedia and wiki for nearly all, I just forget. I used to read daily a lot of wikipedia and was near to doing some software wiki project, but since sometime I am surprisingly working and using it only for finding nice links and work info, which is a less wikipedia-loving activity, no time to love, only do do do. Just one "do" in my case. Sometimes, as now, I like to do no hyperjobs at all. Call it tradition, or senseless temporal inefficiencies.

Anyways, thanks again (to you! not me) and I'll be in your country, Freiburg, for a big solar fair the 20th of june. There, if lucky, I might return you some photos of sun loving machines to compete with your beautiful tree.

Bye! Pablo2garcia 15:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Roses

[edit]

Hi Anna! Wow, that's quite a task you set for yourself! I'm all for polishing some cultivars up, since that would be targeted and not much work because there are so few famous ones. On the other hand, overhauling an article like garden roses might be much more rewarding since it is actually looked at by at least by a few hundread people each day. Making rose presentable would be the best claim to Wiki fame, but where to start there?! The university library I go to is actually great, so if I had time I would work on this :( Please keep me updated on what you want to do. Best regards Hekerui (talk) 21:10, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

World Organisation of Rose Societies.
Liebe Grüße, Anna— Preceding unsigned comment added by Anna reg (talkcontribs)
Hi.

Detracted?

[edit]

"Detracted" (used by you) at Rosa Iceberg doesn't have the meaning in English that I think you intended. Perhaps you meant "retracted"? (Nice to see some work on these cultivar articles.) Peter coxhead (talk) 09:56, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are probably correct (English isn't my mother tongue) - what I'd like to say that the title was removed and it is only a "former ADR-rose". The strange thing is that I'm using it on commons since a few years and I'm quite sure that I didn't translate it from German myself... --Anna reg (talk) 10:16, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I understand. "Detracted" is only used in modern English with "from" and means "reduce the value of" applied to a positive quality. Thus you can write "Susceptibility to black spot detracts from the beauty of the rose". "Retracted" would be correct in the context, but is a bit formal; I ended up with "taken away" in "The German ADR title granted in 1960 was taken away in 2004."
(By the way, a very common English mistake made by German speakers is the wrong use of "since", which is not the same as that of "seit". "Since" can only be used with a fixed time point, e.g. "I've been using it since 2002" or "I've been doing it since 9 o'clock". "Since" is not used with a time span, when "for" is used, e.g. "I've been using it for a few years" or "I've been doing it for a few hours". Note the difference between "I've been using it for three years" (a time span) and "I've been using it since three years ago" (a time point). I'll pass over the very tricky problem of when to use the perfect progressive tense in English... You can see I used to teach linguistics! Peter coxhead (talk) 11:41, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation(s). The since/for mistake is one I am aware of, but I also make quite a lot of mistakes out of inattentiveness - especially when I'm changing what I'm writing mid-sentence (as was the case here). But I'm always glad when somebody checks my changes to articles... ;->
Regards, --Anna reg (talk) 12:06, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
